This is the first book to analyze the evolution of the Roman amphitheatre as an architectural form. Katherine Welch addresses the critical period in the history of this building type: its origins and dissemination under the Republic, from the third to first centuries BC; its monumentalization as an architectural form under Augustus; and its canonization as a building type with the Colosseum (AD 80). The study then shifts focus to the reception of the amphitheatre in the Greek East, a part of the Empire deeply fractured about the new realities of Roman rule.
Brief, tuneful melodies arranged for intermediate flutists and guitarists from early American (1817) popular music. Written in standard notation, these delightful arrangements feature collections of popular melodies from that era as well as airs and dances. In keeping with performance practice of the traditional music played during this time, these arrangements are organized into sets of pieces as they may have been performed during this era. the sets include jigs, slow airs and marches as well as melodies that were popular from the continent. These arrangements are appropriate both for background music as well as public concert performance. the arrangements are derived from a book of flute melodies entitled "Riley's Flute Melodies." Published in 1816 and 1817, this book was possibly used as jazz musicians use lead sheets to develop spontaneous arrangements of pieces depending upon the occasion and the musicians at hand. the guitar arrangements were modeled upon existing guitar practice during that time and use idiomatic guitar devices such as pizzicato and harmonics to provide an imaginative underpinning for the melodies. Many of the arrangements give equal treatment to both the guitar as a harmonic and melodic instrument.

Anatomy of Rebellion provides an understanding of four rebellions that will make clear the factors that are crucial in the development of other rebellions. Seeking a political pattern in the process of rebellion, Claude Welch, Jr., has investigated four large-scale rural uprisings that came close to becoming revolutions: the Taiping rebellion in China 1850-64, the Telengana uprising in India of 1946-51, the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya of 1952-56, the Kwilu uprising in Zaire of 1963-65. Weaving the facts of these rebellions with theories about political violence, Welch follows the rebellions through the initial stages of discontent to the explosion of violence to the suppression of the uprisings. He then challenges explanations of political violence, both Marxist and non-Marxist, that other scholars have proposed. Rebellions have not been studied as thoroughly as the major successful revolutions, although the frequency of rebellions in the modern world is not likely to diminish. Rural dwellers' discontents are still clashing with central governments' ambitions; Anatomy of Rebellion clarifies how this volatile type of political violence occurs.

The Cuban Revolution was a catalyst in shaping American foreign policy over the past generation. Welch's study is the first detailed evaluation of U.S. policy toward Cuba in the early years of the Castro regime and the first effort to analyze public sentiment during that crucial period. Our response to Cuba was a mirror of our Cold War assumptions and frustrations--and of our apprehensions concerning revolutionary movements abroad.

The surgeon who desires an atlas of techniques covering operations on the colon and rectum almost surely prefers a concise volume rather than an encyclopedic compilation of the innumerable procedures that have been described in the literature. This book includes the operations that have proved to be useful and have survived the test of time. They now are in general use in the Massachusetts General Hospital. Space limitations have necessitated exclusion of detailed illustrations of a number of infrequently performed procedures, such as pelvic exenter ation for cancer of the rectum. In such instances bibliographic references have been provided for ready reference. The bibliography emphasizes recent contributions because they are easily available to the reader. Critical comments by the authors concerning certain technical pro cedures may be due to personal bias and certainly do not imply that the alternative methods are undesirable. Furthermore, the brevity of discus sion of anatomy, physiology, and pathology and the neglect of details of medical therapy of numerous colorectal diseases must be attributed to the fact that this volume is directed primarily toward the practicing surgeon. Thanks are due to the artists Mrs. Edith Tagrin and Mr. Robert Galla, and to Miss Evelyn Hall for help in the preparation of the manuscript. Claude E. Welch, M.D. Leslie W. Ottinger, M.D. John P.
