This book is intended to fill the gap between the ""ideal precision"" digital signal processing (DSP) that is widely taught, and the limited precision implementation skills that are commonly required in fixed-point processors and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). These skills are often neglected at the university level, particularly for undergraduates. We have attempted to create a resource both for a DSP elective course and for the practicing engineer with a need to understand fixed-point implementation. Although we assume a background in DSP, Chapter 2 contains a review of basic theory and Chapter 3 reviews random processes to support the noise model of quantization error. Chapter 4 details the binary arithmetic that underlies fixed-point processors and then introduces fractional format for binary numbers. Chapter 5 covers the noise model for quantization error and the effects of coefficient quantization in filters. Because of the numerical sensitivity of IIR filters, they are used extensively as an example system in both Chapters 5 and 6. Fortunately, the principles of dealing with limited precision can be applied to a wide variety of numerically sensitive systems, not just IIR filters. Chapter 6 discusses the problems of product roundoff error and various methods of scaling to avoid overflow. Chapter 7 discusses limit cycle effects and a few common methods for minimizing them. There are a number of simple exercises integrated into the text to allow you to test your understanding. Answers to the exercises are included in the footnotes. A number of MATLAB examples are provided in the text. They generally assume access to the Fixed-Point Toolbox. If you lack access to this software, consider either purchasing or requesting an evaluation license from The Mathworks. The book proposes there was a conspiracy to erase Lady Eleanor from the historical record. The author was compelled to undertake this research when he experienced a series of troubling "lucid dreams" in which he was preincarnated as Lady Eleanor's son, Edward de Wigmore, in the 1460s. Set at Sudeley Castle in Gloustershire, UK, the dreams appeared to present a view of events involving many key figures in medieval Britain that differs from the generally-accepted published accounts. At the time of the dreams, the author was unaware of who Lady Eleanor Butler really was. However, the author later found her identified in one of the most important documents of British history, the Titulus Regius. And, to his own amazement, the author later discovered that Lady Eleanor was in fact an ancestral member of his own family."--
Wetlands and riparian areas between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada are incredibly diverse and valuable habitats. More than 80 percent of the wildlife species in this intermountain region depend on these wetlands—which account for less than 2 percent of the land area—for their survival. At the same time, the wetlands also serve the water needs of ranchers and farmers, recreationists, vacation communities, and cities. It is no exaggeration to call water the “liquid gold” of the West, and the burgeoning human demands on this scarce resource make it imperative to understand and properly manage the wetlands and riverine areas of the Intermountain West. He introduced Ladies' Days, contracted to have Braves games broadcast on radio, and successfully campaigned to allow Sunday baseball in Boston. Moreover, he gave the fans a competitive team, climaxed by the Braves' dramatic pennant race with the New York Giants in 1933. The Depression, however, weakened his financial position to the point where in 1935 Fuchs was forced to give up the team. Using Judge Fuchs' unfinished autobiography, the memories of his son who worked in the organization, and extensive additional research, this story of an owner and an era is complete.
At an early age, I recall hearing many stories told by my elders about the tiny town of Blue Springs and the remarkable people who lived in and around it. I used many of these tales as bedtime stories for my children and grandchildren. Many people urged me to record these stories in writing. Additionally I noticed at an early age how highly esteemed and respected my father was in the community because of his total dedication to his medical practice and how he conducted it. I have also wanted to leave some sort of written tribute for my children and grandchildren about what remarkable people their ancestors were, especially my parents and grandparents. Finally, for a small boy, the tiny little town of Blue Springs was a natural paradise in which to grow up. Springs, swamps, a river, fields and forests abounded. I wanted to tell my children and grandchildren what it was like. I also want them to know, appreciate, and attempt to add to their genealogy. These are the reasons for this book.
