With a quiet confidence empowering him to deal with whatever life hands him, Sam adjusts to his adoption by White Rump, a great Quahada warrior. Within a few years, Sam, now known as Sun Hawk, can no more identify with the white settlers- or his birth parents- than his adoptive family can. And now Sun Hawk sees the white man as an enemy to be vanquished. Hair on Fire is a powerful tale of one young man's coming of age- and his personal liberation under extraordinary circumstances.

This updated, paperback edition includes a new, commemorative section written after Musial’s passing.
An extensive, accessible guide to the owls of Canada and the United States, featuring beautiful photography. There is no group of birds more mysterious and fascinating than owls. The loudmouths of the raptor world, they peep, trill, toot, bark, growl, shriek, whistle, chittle, whoop, chuckle, boom, and buzz. Indeed, very few actually “hoot.” They have become the stuff of lore and legend?from the Roman myth that an owl foot could reveal secrets, to the First Nations belief that an owl feather could give a newborn better night vision. But the truth about owls is much more exciting. In this book, natural history writer and wildlife photographer Wayne Lynch reveals the secrets of these elusive species with stunning photographs, personal anecdotes, and accessible science. The photos alone are masterpieces. Unlike most published owl photos, which are portraits of birds in captivity, the vast majority of these were taken in the wild?a product of the author-photographer’s incredible knowledge and patience. Lynch complements the photos with a wealth of facts about anatomy, habitat, diet, and family life. For each of the nineteen species that inhabit Canada and the United States, he provides a range map and a brief discussion of its distribution, population size, and status. Lynch debunks myths about owls’ “supernatural” powers of sight and hearing, discusses courtship rituals, and offers personal tips for finding owls in the wild. From the great horned to the tiny elf owl, this amazing volume captures the beauty and mystery of these charismatic birds of prey. Named one of the Best Reference Books of 2007 by Library Journal

Once, all barrier islands were natural places where sand dunes and sea grasses, waterbirds and beach creatures flourished, undisturbed by human development. Matagorda Island still is. Part of a chain of five major barrier islands that shelter the Texas coastline from the Gulf of Mexico, Matagorda Island is the only one completely under public ownership-- the only one with a fate entirely in the hands of the people. This guide to the island seeks to acquaint first-time visitors and seasoned naturalists alike with the natural wealth and ecological fragility of Matagorda. In chapters on geology, history, ecology, vegetation, mammals, birds, herptiles, fish, and invertebrates, the authors show how the island is a living ecosystem, where every plant, animal, and sand dune has a role to play in maintaining the balance of nature. They also discuss the human history of Matagorda--the Karankawa Indians, European explorers, Civil War-era settlers, lighthouse keepers, and the U.S. Air Force, which used Matagorda for a bombing range during the 1940s and 1950s. Useful appendices on plants, wildflowers, and birds; maps; and line drawings amplify the text. This unique combination of human and natural history gives a full sense of what the island's past has been and what its future can be. It offers hope that on this one island, at least, humans can learn to enjoy a natural environment nondestructively, respecting the intricate web of relationships that connects the land and all living creatures.
The Wished For Country is set during the founding of the Maryland colony in the mid-seventeenth century. It traces the entwined lives of James Hallam, a carpenter and indentured servant; Ezekiel, an African slave brought to Maryland from Barbados; and Tawzin, a Piscataway Indian, kidnapped to England when a child, and now back in America. While Hallam goes on to become a soldier and a player in the politics of the Maryland colony, Ezekiel and Tawzin become the center of an outcast group of Blacks, poor whites, and Native Americans, who find themselves striving to reinvent themselves and their world. The stories of these three men, the women who love them, and the community they form, bring to vivid life the experiences of those who came to America pulled by a dream of what could be shaped from an emptiness that embodied promise, of those who were unwillingly brought to be the instruments of that dream, and of those who saw the shape of their world forever changed by the coming of the Europeans.

In these three Hawker adventures, the New York Times–bestselling author of the Doc Ford and Hannah Smith novels “raises the bar of the action thriller” (The Miami Herald). Deadly in New York: To take revenge on the men who marked him to die, Hawker travels to New York City, where the Fister Corporation backs up their ruthless real estate development with murder. In the twisted streets of Greenwich Village, Hawker will risk his life in the name of justice. Houston Attack: Hawker goes undercover and across the border to catch a human trafficking ring funded by a millionaire Texan rancher. The slavers prey on illegal Mexican immigrants, but tonight they picked up the wrong man. Vegas Vengeance: Barbara Blaine is the most talented madam in Sin City—as well as the toughest. So when gangsters want to take over her brothel, she’s ready to fight. But when her longtime lover disappears, she knows the only man who can help her is Hawker, America’s deadliest vigilante.
The journey has been exciting, challenging, and fun. All the things we have at home, we are doing without in this world. No phones, computers, cars, or even fast-food places, and for some reason, we really don’t miss those things. I guess when you step back in time, your feet tend to take the path of those around you. So if no one is using a phone, you don’t miss it. If others are not eating greasy, overcooked hamburgers, you don’t yearn for those either. Well, just a moment, now that I am thinking about it, maybe a good old greasy burger with tomatoes, onions, and cheese would taste pretty good, with a large order of fries and fry sauce. I bet when I get home, one of the first things I will do is go to downtown Walla Walla and find a fast-food joint. We have traveled a reasonable distance and have found our time in this world is entirely different than our world. What seems like weeks over here in this world are only a few hours back home. The three of us and our pets all seem to be gaining more strength and power. And we can’t forget about Vanessa and her sisters as they are also increasing their strengths and capabilities. I keep wondering why, as Vanessa, if her sisters and parents are from this world, or are they? We have done some amazing things in the time we have been in Imperealisity, but I get the feeling we are in for more attention-grabbing times and exciting activities in this world. As we all climb into the back of our wagon, we know we have a good week of travel ahead of us. We don’t know what’s out there in front of us. However, we do know we are here for an extraordinary purpose, and that is to fulfill a prophecy that is centuries old. We have powers and strengths that can protect and help those in this world. So as we travel to the southern region to look for what is unknown, I hope you can imagine all the things we see and do. I hope you enjoy the ride.
Walking up and looking over the edge of the hill, what I viewed looked like prisoners with guards around them. As I tried to observe everything, suddenly, what I saw almost gave me a scare of which I have never had before in my life. Turning and sliding down the wall of rocks behind me, I sat down. Steve stood, looked over the edge of the hill viewing the guards, and then noticed the same thing I had seen. Suddenly he was sliding down and sitting next to me on the ground. Bailey looked at both of us, with our faces pale and blank, then stood up, and took in the view. Steve asked, “Marty, what is that thing?” “You’re asking the wrong person, Steve,” I replied. “No. I am asking you,” Steve said. “You mean the thing with big, pointed ears and red eyes?” “Yes, that is what I mean,” Steve said. Bailey slid down beside us and shook her head, asking, “Isn’t he dead?” Ziggy looked over the edge and commented, “That is the ugliest dog I have ever seen.” New adventures and marvelous new characters await the readers in this second book of the series of Imperealisity. It’s a time of unusual pets, wizards, dragons, and little people. It’s time for those new adventures to begin.
