Reflecting critically on the discipline of African American studies is a complicated undertaking. Making sense of the black American experience requires situating it within the larger cultural, political-economic, and ideological dynamics that shape American life. This volume moves away from privileging racial commonality as the fulcrum of inquiry and moves toward observing the quality of the accounts scholars have rendered of black American life. This book maps the changing conditions of black political practice and experience from Emancipation to Obama with excursions into the Jim Crow era, Black Power radicalism, and the Reagan revolt. Here are essays, classic and new, that define historically and conceptually discrete problems affecting black Americans as these problems have been shaped by both politics and scholarly fashion. A key goal of the book is to come to terms with the changing terrain of American life in view of major Civil Rights court decisions and legislation.
Through story, through myth, through science fiction and fantasy, he argues, Le Guin takes us into her communities of the heart, communities that are truly human." "Le Guin's rhetoric, when placed in historical and sociocultural context, becomes the rhetoric of Emerson, Thoreau, Peirce, and Dewey: American romantic/pragmatic rhetoric - a rhetoric that argues for value to be given to the subjective, the personal and private, the small, and the feminine. Rochelle studies Le Guin's Earthsea cycle, The Dispossessed, The Left Hand of Darkness, Always Coming Home, Four Ways to Forgiveness, A Fisherman of The Inland Sea, two recent novellas, Dragonfly and Old Music and the Slave Women, and selected short stories. The theorists of language, culture and myth discussed include Susanne Langer, Kenneth Burke, Lev Vygotsky, Walter Fisher, Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell."--BOOK JACKET.
Covered bridges are gaining attention as states and counties are making large investments in the repair and preservation of existing covered bridges, offering tours and building new ones. This work documents all extant covered bridges--vehicle, railroad and pedestrian--in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. The book is arranged by state, then by county and bridge name, using the most commonly known or locally used name. All other known names will be included for each bridge, cross-referenced in the index. Each state is prefaced with a brief synopsis of its bridges, past and present, including bridge types, truss types and geographic location. To be included, a bridge must have been originally built as, or intended to be, a true covered bridge, meaning that it is used as a means of traveling over an obstacle, usually water, not attached to buildings solely for access to the building or between buildings, and has a covered portion at least ten feet in length. Richly illustrated.
