Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) contains an extensive knowledge that the Chinese nation has accumulated through practical experimentation and theoretical research in treating diseases and promoting health over a period of thousands of years. Throughout the history, many TCM theorists, experts, and pharmacists have contributed valuable works. The most representative of them was Li Shizhen with his Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Materia Medica), which was praised by Charles Darwin as an 'encyclopaedia' of ancient China and was selected into Memory of the World Register by UNESCO in 2011.This book is divided into two parts: the introduction and the selected reading of the original work of Ben Cao Gang Mu. In the introductory part, the life story, academic characteristics and main contributions of Li Shizhen are illustrated, and suggested learning methods of the book are recommended. In the selected reading part, five aspects are mainly discussed: original preface and memorial to the throne, essence of Li Shizhen's medical theories, treatment of various diseases, Li Shizhen's medical records and medical notes, and health preservation. Apart from the selected reading from Ben Cao Gang Mu, theoretical exposition and modern application are supplemented in each chapter so as to improve readers' theoretical knowledge and ability of practical problem-solving.
In order to improve the resiliency of the grid and to enable integration of renewable energy sources into the grid, the utilization of battery systems to store energy for later demand is of the utmost importance. The implementation of grid-scale electrical energy storage systems can aid in peak shaving and load leveling, voltage and frequency regulation, as well as emergency power supply. Although the predominant battery chemistry currently used is Li-ion; due to cost, safety and sourcing concerns, incorporation of other battery technologies is of interest for expanding the breadth and depth of battery storage system installations. This Element discusses existing technologies beyond Li-ion battery storage chemistries that have seen grid-scale deployment, as well as several other promising battery technologies, and analyzes their chemistry mechanisms, battery construction and design, and corresponding advantages and disadvantages.

Using a synthetic narrative approach, this ambitious work uses the lens of multipolarity to analyze Tang China’s (618–907) relations with Turkestan; the Korean states of Koguryŏ, Silla, and Paekche; the state of Parhae in Manchuria; and the Nanzhao and Tibetan kingdoms. Without any one entity able to dominate Asia’s geopolitical landscape, the author argues that relations among these countries were quite fluid and dynamic—an interpretation that departs markedly from the prevalent view of China fixed at the center of a widespread “tribute system.” To cope with external affairs in a tumultuous world, Tang China employed a dual management system that allowed both central and local officials to conduct foreign affairs. The court authorized Tang local administrators to receive foreign visitors, forward their diplomatic letters to the capital, and manage contact with outsiders whose territories bordered on China. Not limited to handling routine matters, local officials used their knowledge of border situations to influence the court’s foreign policy. Some even took the liberty of acting without the court’s authorization when an emergency occurred, thus adding another layer to multipolarity in the region’s geopolitics. The book also sheds new light on the ideological foundation of Tang China’s foreign policy. Appropriateness, efficacy, expedience, and mutual self-interest guided the court’s actions abroad. Although officials often used “virtue” and “righteousness” in policy discussions and announcements, these terms were not abstract universal principles but justifications for the pursuit of self-interest by those involved. Detailed philological studies reveal that in the realm of international politics, “virtue” and “righteousness” were in fact viewed as pragmatic and utilitarian in nature. Comprehensive and authoritative, Tang China in Multi-Polar Asia is a major work on Tang foreign relations that will reconceptualize our understanding of the complexities of diplomacy and war in imperial China.

The second part of the paper gives a complete answer to the integral representations of one quadratic form by another with more than four variables over a global function field in characteristic 2.

Solid atate ionics, being a multidisciplinary area, is expected to grow at a faster rate in the new millennium, prompting the discovery of new materials and devices, as well as helping to optimize the known devices, especially the portable power sources and display systems. The Asian Society for Solid State Ionics (ASSSI) plays a significant role in bringing together researchers from the Asian countries, every two years, to exchange notes and ideas, to foster friendship and collaboration, and to discuss the prospects. The topics covered in this volume are: ion dynamics, theoretical modeling, ion-conducting polymers, gels and ceramics, glasses, crystalline materials including nano-phases, composites, electrode/electrolyte interfaces and novel experimental techniques. Papers on crystalline materials deal with ion conduction in Li, Na, Ag, Tl, F and O-containing compounds. Materials and device aspects have received wide coverage, especially the areas of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and solid oxidefuel cells,(SOFCs). Rechargeable high energy density LIBs, especially those employing immobilized gel or polymer electrolyte, are the favorite portable power sources in the new millennium. As expected, a large number of papers on both cathodes and polymer electrolytes for LIBs were presented at the conference. The papers on fuel cells almost exclusively deal with SOFCs, indicating the great importance being given to this area in Japan and China. A breakthrough in materials and technology of SOFC is expected in the coming decade. This volume will be useful not only to the active researchers in the field but also to youngsters entering the exciting area of solid state ionics.
