This book presents the principles and pearls for successful surgical management of challenging situations encountered during cataract surgery. A wide range of settings are considered, including cataract surgery in patients with uveitis, traumatic cataract, dislocation of an intraocular lens, intumescent cataract, brunescent cataract, combined cataract and corneal disease, combined cataract and glaucoma, pediatric cataract, and refractive cataract surgery. In addition, preoperative factors conducive to a favorable surgical result are identified and appropriate management of postoperative complications, described. As longevity increases, cataract is becoming an even greater public health issue worldwide. The use of cataract surgery, already one of the most frequently performed surgeries, is consequently increasing still further – a trend reinforced by developments in instrumentation and technology and improvements in access to surgery. This book is for those interested to know more about Islamic banking. In addition, it provides insights to both regulators and practitioners to focus their efforts in balancing their portfolio and improving the health of their Islamic banks for the future. Past studies have shown that Islamic banks, unlike their conventional banking counterparts, were better able to weather the global financial crisis partly due to the nature of the Islamic finance which prohibits excessive risk taking. In this book, the authors review the Islamic finance in terms of governance and firms' characteristics. We elaborate the relationships between corporate governance and firm characteristics with Risk Weighted Capital Adequacy Ratio (RWCAR) of full-fledged Islamic Banks in Malaysia. The motivation for the study is to seek whether the RWCAR of Islamic banks is influenced by the Corporate Governance and Firm Characteristics variables post 2008 global financial crisis. Descriptive statistics were presented and correlation using Pearson's Model Correlation Coefficient (PMCC) was observed and analyzed. The findings reveal that Corporate Governance has no direct relationship with the RWCAR of Islamic banks in Malaysia. Instead, firm characteristics variables such as Total Financing Assets and Effective Foreign Ownership have a strong relationship with RWCAR.
This book describes the development of novel protein–RNA-binding assays and their applications in a high-throughput manner for the identification of small-molecule modulators of protein–RNA interactions to treat cancer and COVID-19. Modulating protein–RNA interactions with small molecules is expected to provide novel biological insights of the interrelation of diseases with the protein–RNA interactome. The modulations may also be exploited therapeutically. For these reasons, the development of a simple, reliable, and sensitive protein–RNA-binding assay is necessary for high-throughput screening to discover new effective chemical entities capable of acting on diverse protein–RNA interactions. This book discusses the discovery of small-molecule modulators targeting protein–RNA interactions that are potentially valuable to treat cancer and COVID-19 by constructing novel high-throughput screening methods. The results of this dissertation provide valuable insights into the regulation of protein–RNA interactions in chemical biology and drug development.
