The book concludes with an uncompromising advocacy of hedonism, urging readers to experience life as fully as possible. His cry of "art for art's sake" became the manifesto of the Aesthetic Movement, and his assessments of Renaissance art have influenced generations of readers.

Walter Horatio Pater (1839-1894) was an English essayist, art critic, and academic best remembered for his Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873), a book at the forefront of the aesthetic movement which advocated "art for art's sake" and considered a successful life to "burn always with this hard, gemlike flame." Pater also wrote a series of what he termed "Imaginary Portraits," a type of literary vignette of his own devising that masterfully blended elements of biography, prose poem, and short story. While most of the Portraits take the form of historical recreations, the three collected in this edition (The Child in the House, An English Poet, and Emerald Uthwart) are contemporary to Pater's own time and are perhaps the most autobiographical. Previously appearing in the posthumous Miscellaneous Studies, The Child in the House and Emerald Uthwart are better served thematically in a separate volume. They are reprinted here along with An English Poet, a nearly forgotten, unfinished, and unpublished Portrait of Pater's that appears in book form for the first time. With regard to their influence, there is evidence to suggest that the Imaginary Portraits, especially The Child in the House, greatly inspired Proust in his writing of In Search of Lost Time.
Imaginary Portraits' is volume 3 in the ten-volume Collected Works of Walter Pater. Among Victorian writers, Pater (1839-1894) challenged academic and religious orthodoxies, defended 'the love of art for its own sake', developed a new genre of prose fiction (the 'imaginary portrait'), set new standards for intermedial and cross-disciplinary criticism, and made 'style' the watchword for creativity and life. Pater's Imaginary Portraits are among some of the most stylish and original pieces of short fiction in Victorian literature: portrayals of a series of handsome male protagonists across the ages of European history, set against a range of evocative European backdrops from Classical Greece to Medieval France, eighteenth-century Germany and modern England. Together, they constitute a remarkable testimony to Pater's profound understanding of centuries of cultural history, reworked in the0hybrid genre of the imaginary portrait as sophisticated portrait miniatures of minor characters touched and affected by major moments in European history. They question central issues of nationhood and belonging, a Pan-European cultural identity, and the fate of the individual in the face of collective history. As formative texts for Modernist writers like Joyce, Eliot, and Woolf, Pater's Imaginary Portraits had an impact which reached far beyond the nineteenth century.
Famed for his singular prose style as much as for his controversial aestheticist principles, Walter Pater (1839-1894) was one of the great essayists in a century of great essayistic writing. His first book, Studies in the History of the Renaissance — one of the most original and influential texts of the Victorian Aesthetic Movement — was described by Arthur Symons as 'the most beautiful book of prose in our literature', and his later work moved Vernon Lee to call him 'the natural exponent of the highest aesthetic doctrine'. Selected Essays is a generous gathering of Pater's essays on literature, art, history, philosophy and mythology — all of them, in the words of Oscar Wilde, 'delicately wrought works of art'. The selection is accompanied by Alex Wong's critical and biographical introduction and rich explanatory notes.
