After the War he worked his way back to the USA from Hamburg and sent for our Grandmother as soon as he could afford it. Neither of them returned until our Grandmother did in the 1970s. This book tells the family story from just before the war up until the present time.

According to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970 it is prepared under the aus pices of the International Astronomical Union. Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive doc umentation in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. It is due to the ever lasting increase of the bulk of material that the information content of our regular volumes is growing seriously. Therefore, the need for detailed index informations allowing the performance of retrospective literature searches be comes more and more important. Volume 23/24-the second General Index of Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts - contains author and subject indexes to volumes II -14 and, respectively, 17-22. Thus, the astronomical and astrophysical literature of the whole five-year period 197 4 -1978 is cov ered by this volume. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 9 contains literature published in 1973 and received before August 15, 1973; some older liter ature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bouska, who surveyed journals and publications in the Czech language and supplied us with abstracts in English, and by the Common wealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.), Sydney, for providing titles and abstracts of papers on radio astronomy.

Elastic Waves in the Earth provides information on the relationship between seismology and geophysics and their general aspects. The book offers elastodynamic equations and derivative equations that can be used in the propagation of elastic waves. It also covers major topics in detail, such as the fundamentals of elastodynamics; the Lamb's problem, which includes the Cagniard-de Hoop theory; rays and modes in a radially inhomogeneous earth and in multilayered media, which includes the Thomson-Haskell theory; the elastic wave dissipation; the seismic source and noise; and the seismographs. The book consists of 33 chapters. The first 16 chapters include basic material related to the propagation of elastic waves. Topics covered by these chapters include scalars, vectors, and tensors in cartesian coordinates, stress and strain analysis, equations of elasticity and motion, plane waves, Rayleigh waves, plane-wave theory, and fluid-fluid and solid-solid interfaces. The second half of the book covers various ray and mode theories, elastic wave dissipation, and the observations and theories of seismic source and seismic noise. It concludes by discussing earthquake seismology and different seismographs, like the pendulum seismometer and the strain seismometer.
