This text contains the proceedings of a workshop on software develoDment tools, held at Pingree Park, Colorado in May, 1979. The workshop, for which we were co-chair men, was primarily, but not exclusively, concerned with a variety of tools supporting pre-implementation phases of software development. The workshop brought together researchers and practitioners from industrial, governmental, and academic sectors to compare and assess current work and to set some directions for future work in this emerging technical area. The fifty participants represented research and development efforts in software tools within the United States, Canada, France, Great Britain, and Japan. (A list of participants appears at the end of the text. ) Sponsorship was provided by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Bureau of Standards, the National Science Foundation, and Digital Equipment Corporation. The conference consisted of seven formal sessions and numerous organized and impromptu discussions. Each session (except the last) included invited papers, prepared remarks by discussants, and an open discussion.
At the close of World War II, Allied forces faced frightening new German secret weapons—buzz bombs, V-2's, and the first jet fighters. When Hitler's war machine began to collapse, the race was on to snatch these secrets before the Soviet Red Army found them. The last battle of World War II, then, was not for military victory but for the technology of the Third Reich. In American Raiders: The Race to Capture the Luftwaffe's Secrets, Wolfgang W. E. Samuel assembles from official Air Force records and survivors' interviews the largely untold stories of the disarmament of the once mighty Luftwaffe and of Operation Lusty—the hunt for Nazi technologies. In April 1945 American armies were on the brink of winning their greatest military victory, yet America's technological backwardness was shocking when measured against that of the retreating enemy. Senior officers, including the Commanding General of the Army Air Forces Henry Harley “Hap” Arnold, knew all too well the seemingly overwhelming victory was less than it appeared. There was just too much luck involved in its outcome. Two intrepid American Army Air Forces colonels set out to regain America's technological edge. One, Harold E. Watson, went after the German jets; the other, Donald L. Putt, went after the Nazis' intellectual capital—their world-class scientists. With the help of German and American pilots, Watson brought the jets to America; Putt persevered as well and succeeded in bringing the German scientists to the Army Air Forces' aircraft test and evaluation center at Wright Field. A young P-38 fighter pilot, Lloyd Wenzel, a Texan of German descent, then turned these enemy aliens into productive American citizens—men who built the rockets that took America to the moon, conquered the sound barrier, and laid the foundation for America's civil and military aviation of the future. American Raiders: The Race to Capture the Luftwaffe's Secrets details the contest won, a triumph that shaped America's victories in the Cold War.

The Souls of Black Folk is W.E.B. Du Bois' most famous work. While the work is often viewed as a classic in African American literature and the history of the African American experience, the sociological significance of the work has been understated. In his initial discussions with the book's original publisher, Du Bois desired to prepare a volume that would showcase his ongoing sociological work on "the Negro problems." While many editions of Du Bois' classic text have appeared, no edition has focused primarily on the eight previously published essays in their original form and chronological order. This fact alone makes The Sociological Souls of Black Folk unique. An introductory essay by the volume's editor, Robert Wortham, highlights the sociological significance of the original essays by addressing such themes as the concept of the self, the social construction of the African American experience, and racial inequality. Eight additional essays originally published between 1897 and 1900 are added by the editor in a second section. These additional sociological essays focus on African American entrepreneurship, crime, race relations, liberal arts education, the Black Church's function within the African American community, and the quality of African American life in the Southern Black Belt. The essays included in The Sociological Souls of Black Folk provide the reader with an opportunity to gain a greater appreciation for Du Bois' early sociological work and recognize that Du Bois was indeed one of the pioneering figures in the development of sociology in the United States.
The Bar Code Puzzle By: W. E. Anderson For fifty years, an obvious message has been hidden in plain sight. This work reveals it. Within the Universal Product Code, the scannable code emblazoned upon nearly every product we use today, there is a discernible order to the numbers, though the original author of the code claimed it was arbitrary. This order shows numerical ties to mathematical formulae from the pyramids and numbers pertinent to Biblical prophecy. The Bar Code Puzzle proves these links, not through speculation, but rather through sound facts from the code itself. The connections are undeniable, and Anderson’s sobering insights are relevant to Christians and non-Christians alike. Regardless of a reader’s convictions, they will come away from this work with a new sense of wonder and a desire to reevaluate their beliefs.
In his first novel, British scholar Christopher W.E. Bigsby provides a prequel to The Scarlet Letter, introducing readers to a younger Hester Prynne. He tells of her attempts to flee an oppressive marriage to Roger Chillingworth, her love affair with Arthur Dimmesdale, and her life in the New World. In the process, Bigsby condemns the obstacles and prejudices that strong, intelligent women faced in the 17th century, providing a powerful narrative reframing of a compelling literary character.
Satirical, politically incorrect, irreverent, Flight from Ein Sof is the fictional first-person account of a brief journey to and from a realm of nightmares and insanity. Filled with blistering commentaries on life, free thought, human bestiality and death, this scathing allegory exposes the absurdities and horrors of ideological tyranny, the irrationality of blind faith, the despotism of senseless beliefs and the pointless circularity of the human condition. Revisiting a theme first explored by the author in NOCTURNES - Tales From The Dreamtime, this disquieting and profane opus warns against the ignominy of forced ideas and the false prophets who, to ensnare men's souls, fill their heads with mind-boggling lies. About the Author Born in Paris, W. E. Gutman is a widely published veteran journalist and author. From 1991 to 2004 he was on assignment in Central America where he covered politics, human rights and other socio-economic themes. He lives with his wife in southern California's "high desert.

In the past fi fteen years there has been a growi ng interest in the development of children's awareness of language as an object in itself -- a phenomenon now generally referred to as metal inguistic awareness. Until the publication of an earlier volume in the Springer Series in Language and Communication, The Chitd's Conoeption oi Language, edited by A. Sinclair, R. J. Jarvella, and W. J. M. Levelt, there had been no systematic treatment of metalinguistic awareness. The major goal of that volume was to map out the field of study by describing the phenomenon of interest and defining major theoretical issues. The aim of the present volume is to present an overview of metalinguistic awareness in children which reflects the current state of research and theory. The volume is divided into three major sections. The first considers various conceptual and methodological issues that have arisen from efforts to study metalinguistic awareness. It addresses such questions as what is metalinguistic awareness, when does it begin to emerge, and what tasks and procedures can be employed to assess its development in young children. The second sect ion cri ti ca 11y revi ews the research that has been conducted i nto the four general types of metalinguistic awareness -- phonologieal, word, syntactic, and pragmatic awareness. In the final section the development of metalinguistic awareness is examined in relation to general cognitive development, reading acquisition, bilingualism, and early childhood education.
Famous for his 1875 poem ‘Invictus’, the late Victorian author W. E. Henley was an influential poet, critic and editor, whose verses demonstrate some of the earliest examples of free verse in English literature. His works are noted for their experimental approach to form, abrasive narrative shifts and internal monologue, while at times tackling controversial subject matter. A fixture of London literary circles, the one-legged Henley served as the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Long John Silver.
