In this path-breaking book, the author argues that European countries' political-economic policies, practices, and discourses have changed profoundly in response to globalization and Europeanization, but they have not converged. Although national policies may now be more similar, especially where they follow from common European policies, they are not the same. National practices, although moving in the same general direction toward greater market orientation, continue to be differentiable into not just one or even two but three varieties of capitalism. And national discourses that generate and legitimate changes in policies and practices not only remain distinct, they matter. The book is a tour de force which combines sophisticated theoretical insights and innovative methods to show that European countries generally, but in particular Britain, France, and Germany (for which the book provides lengthy case studies), have had very different experiences of economic adjustment, and will continue to do so into the future.
In Lives Charmed: Intimate Conversations with Extraordinary People , writer Linda Sivertsten interviews many of the celebrities she came to know through being a professional dog-walker in Los Angeles. Her intention was to find people who were experiencing success in every area of life while living a purposeful and environmentally conscious existence. She wanted to discover the common thread in those who found a happy balance. Linda Siversten asks them about their fears, insecurities, and their spiritual discipli≠ whether and how they pray, and what they do to continue the good fortune in their lives. Read how celebrities such as Woody Harrelson, Leeza Gibbons, Arnold Palmer, Lord Robin Russell, Catherine Oxenberg, Robert A. Johnson, Beatrice Wood, Robert Townsend, Paul Williams and others answer the in-depth and personal questions that Linda Sivertsen presents.
Market society is producing more crime around the world. More acts are being defined as crimes. Ever increasing numbers of people are classified as criminals and more are being locked up in prison. With globalization, the crime and punishment problem is no longer insulated from pressures beyond national borders. The rich may retreat behind their expensive security into gated communities, but the poor are more and more at the mercy of criminals and corrupt policing. Yet, Vivien Stern argues, the trends towards more criminalization and more imprisonment are not making for more effective crime control or safer communities. This important book demonstrates that the prospects for the future are serious unless NGOs and reformers join in a new movement for reform that gives more control of justice policy back to communities and neighbourhoods.
