As a member of the Kimmage Garrison (comprised of exiles from England) WILLE MacNAMEE fought in the General Post Office in the 1916 EASTER RISING. Through a strange quirk of fate he was one of the very few volunteers from that garrison to survive. Meanwhile, in Parnell Street (around the corner from the G.P.O.) while the City of Dublin burned, the widow MARY O'DWYER, grappled with hoards of stockpiling customers in her FAMILY DAIRY. Until shortages and the threatening flames forced its closure. Thankfully the dairy escaped unharmed. And Mary thanked the Good Lord for his blessings which included the non involverment of any of her seven offsprings in the Rising. However, on the day of the surrender two incidents associated with the RISING brought immeasurable sorrow to Mary and her family. Later as a P.O.W. in the Frongoch Camp in Wales, Wille became friendly with Mary's son, Peter. As members of the IRB (The Irish Replican Brotherhood) both men joined Collins' secret 'net work.' Shortly afterwards Peter introduced Willie to his two younger sisters, NANCY and JANE, when they came to visit from Dublin. For Willie and Jane it was love at first sight. During the rest of their stay in Frongoch, Willie and Peter, together with many other nationalists, became immersed in Collins' secret plans to wage guerilla warfare in Ireland after their release, which occurred on the 22nd December. However, Willie's clandestine association with Collins afterwards caused great unhappiness in his romance with Jane. Foremost was the mother's intolerance and prejudice against the renegade republican, Willie, keeping company with her daughter. Eventually Willie had to make a choice.

Avoiding the established portrayal of a monolithic entity headed by the Coptic Pope, Ibrahim examines the multifaceted dimensions of the Coptic community, assessing Coptic-State relations on one hand and Coptic intra-communal dimensions on the other. Examining the impact of the British Occupation of Egypt on the making of new national identities, she explores the emergence of a new politically active Coptic class; highlighting popular Coptic grassroots mobilisation during the 1919 revolution through the case-study of the Coptic priest Qommus Sergius. She discusses the centrality of the Copt and Wafdist, Makram Ebeid, on constitutional politics, and his role as a whistleblower during the 'Black Book Affair'. Breaking with the portrayal of a defenceless community, Ibrahim also reveals a strong Coptic response to the emergence and threats of Political Islam through the press. She presents and analyses for the first time, the unique satirical 'Ode to the Fezzed Shaykh', aimed at Muslim Brotherhood leader Hassan al-Banna. Through the establishment of benevolent and philanthropic societies, Ibrahim argues that Coptic youths were amongst the first to negotiate a role for themselves in post-revolutionary Egypt. Adopting President Nasser's revolutionary rhetoric of tathir, or cleansing, Ibrahim examines how a group of Coptic youths abducted their Pope and forced through their own agenda of religious and political reform. This book will be essential reading for scholars of the Coptic community and Middle East Studies.

Once the beehive coke oven was perfected in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the coal and coke industry began to flourish and supply other fledgling industries with the fuel they needed to succeed. The thrust of this growth came from Henry Clay Frick, who opened his first coal mines in the Morgan Valley of Fayette County in 1871. There, he helped lead the industry, making it the major developmental force in industrial America. This book traces the birth and growth of the early coal and coke industry from 1870 to 1920, primarily in Fayette and Westmoreland Counties. Beyond Frick's importance to the industry, other major topics covered in this history include the lives and struggles of the miners and immigrants who worked in the industry, the growth of unions and the many strikes in the region, and the attempts to clean the surrounding waterways from the horrific pollution that resulted from industrial development. Perhaps the most significant fact is that this book uses primary sources contemporary with the golden age of the coal and coke industry. That effort offers an alternative view and helps repair the common portrayal of Frick as corrupt by showing his work as that of an industrial genius.
