The main topics covered by the book regard the new developments of the methods and computer architectures in the field of Data Analysis in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The materials presented here is comprehensive and of interest to both experts in data analysis and students of an high degree course. The text is derived from lectures given during the tutorial sessions of the workshop on Data Analysis in Astronomy held at the Ettore Majorana Centre in Erice.
Perceptual processes in humans and machines, investigated and simulated by means of the computational approach, are the subject matter of this volume. Researchers in artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, and psychology discuss aspects of vision, speech understanding, sensory-motor coordination, and their interplay with cognitive and behavioral functionalities. The papers adopt the computational approach as the basic research paradigm. Connectionist models, numerical and statistical techniques, symbolic (logic-based) formalisms, and hybrid representations provide the formal background to the research. Some of the papers were prepared for a workshop held in Trieste, Italy, in October 1992.
The book examines the life and the writings of Gabriele Biondo, a secular priest who lived in the little town of Modigliana between the second half of the fifteenth century and the first decades of the sixteenth century. Through a careful examination of his writings and the sources he used, this book allows the reader to obtain a more precise understanding of Biondo, his background, his life, his movements, the difficulties that he encountered (mainly with the ecclesiastical authorities and the other members of the clergy, but also with civic leaders), and the main events of his life. Additionally, Biondo was the leader of a minor following formed by nuns, secular women, and laymen. Therefore, this book illustrates Biondo’s pastoral activity, the ideas and principles that supported his actions, and the objectives he was pursuing. Given these various objectives, this book is of interest to those scholars and academics interested in the religious tensions that swept through Europe in the years immediately preceding the Protestant Reformation and who, consequently, seek to investigate Biondo’s personal and complex answer to these tensions.
This volume constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Fuzzy Logic and Applications held in Naples, Italy, in October 2003. The 40 revised full papers presented have gone through two rounds of reviewing and revision. All current issues of theoretical, experimental and applied fuzzy logic and related techniques are addressed with special attention to rough set theory, neural networks, genetic algorithms and soft computing. The papers are organized in topical section on fuzzy sets and systems, fuzzy control, neuro-fuzzy systems, fuzzy decision theory and application, and soft computing in image processing.
