After a week¿s run in Hartford, Connecticut, in February 1934, it moved to New York where--with some sixty performances in six weeks--it became the longest-running opera that Broadway up to that time had experienced.This critical edition by H. Wiley Hitchcock and Charles Fussell features the scenario by Maurice Grosser and is based on the full score that Thomson commissioned from copyist Ben Weber for his 1947-48 revision; it includes the 32-measure orchestral prelude to the Act II "Dance of the Angels," and it makes comparisons primarily to the manuscript scores held at the Library of Congress and Yale University. The critical apparatus applies as much to the music as to the Stein text, the principal source for which is the 1929 first publication.

American Music Since 1910 (1971) is a series of incisive essays on the lives and works of Ives, Ruggles, Varèse, Copland, Cage, and others who helped define a national musical idiom. Music with Words (1989), Thomson’s final book, is a distillation of a subject he knew better than perhaps any other American composer: how to set English—especially American English—to music, in opera and art song. The volume is rounded out by a judicious selection of Thomson’s magazine journalism from 1957 to 1984—thirty-seven pieces, most of them previously uncollected, including many long-form review-essays written for The New York Review of Books. Richard would've never thought that a harmless bike ride with his sister and neighbor could lead to the most intense journey of his life. Yoseph, his neighbor, would have never thought about lighting himself on fire (until that giant robot incident, of course). Samantha, Richard's sister, would have never thought about escaping a sticky situation by flying away on a glowing star. And Richard, oh man, he definitely wouldn't have thought about killing himself with his own lightning ice machete (but in that demon forest, those whispers were really getting to him). However, the 3 of them weren't completely oblivious. During The Dream, they had seen a morsel of their fate (though Richard didn't particularly like his). Follow them on their "harmless" bike ride through the woods and experience their adventure first-hand. Trust me, you wouldn't be the only one following them...
