Carlo Urbani, an Italian doctor and microbiologist, made history as the first person to identify and classify Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) or atypical pneumonia during its outbreak between 2002 and 2003. Tragically, he succumbed to the same disease on March 29th, 2003, while working in Bangkok. This book offers a new edition, with English translation and commentary, of the Kitāb al-Madḫal, which opens Avicenna’s (d. 1037) most comprehensive summa of Peripatetic philosophy, namely the Kitāb al-Šifāʾ. For the first time, the text is established together with a stemma codicum showing the genealogical relations among 34 manuscripts, the twelfth-century Latin translation, and the literal quotations by Avicenna’s first and second-generation students. In this book, Avicenna’s reappraisal of Porphyry’s Isagoge is examined from both a historical and a philosophical point of view. The key-features of Avicenna’s theory of predicables are analyzed in the General Introduction and in the Commentary both in their own right and against the background of the Greek and Arabic exegetical tradition. Readers shall find in this book the first systematic study of the Madḫal which, in addition to being the only logical work of the Šifāʾ ever transmitted in its entirety both in Arabic and in Latin, is crucial for understanding Avicenna’s conception of universal predicables at the crossroads between logic and metaphysics.

This book tells the story of the Del Riccio family in Florence in the early modern period, investigating the cultural mediations fostered by the family between Florence, Rome, and Naples, as well as shedding light on the intellectual and social exchanges between different regions of Italy and on the creation of foreign nations within the main Italian cities. These social and cultural dimensions are further explored through the study of the obsessive persistence of the family’s relationship with Michelangelo Buonarroti, exhibited both publicly, in the Florentine and Neapolitan family chapels, and privately in their homes. The main achievement of this study is to move the focus from the ruling power, the Medici family and the immediate members of their court, to a Florentine middle-class family and its social mobility: this shift from the conventional narrative to a distributed microhistory is fundamental to better assess the use of images and artworks in early modern Florence and abroad. The aesthetic and stylistic choices in the use of art and art display made by the Del Riccio reveal a deep awareness of the substantial differences in taste and meaning between different cities of the Italian peninsula. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, and Renaissance studies.
In higher organisms, the control of amino acid metabolism has been identified as an evolutionarily preserved strategy for limiting the expansion of actively proliferating cells, including antigen-activated T lymphocytes, and tumor cells have surreptitiously adopted it to avoid or restrain attack by the immune system. Tumor growth is often associated with an altered metabolism of the amino acid L-arginine (L-Arg) by the enzymes nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and arginase (ARG). In tumor-recruited myeloid cells or in cancerous cells the consequence of their activities causes L-Arg deprivation or release of NO, which have been shown to have profound effects directly on tumor outgrowth as well as on the regulation of antitumor T-cell-mediated immune responses. Experimental findings indicate that when either one of the two enzymes is active, the net effect on T lymphocytes can be attributed to cell cycle arrest whereas the concomitant activation of both enzymes within the same environment can lead to T-cell death by apoptosis. Moreover, an increasing amount of evidence reveals an intricate system of circuits controlling either pathway or their crosstalk in cancer and in immune cells. This highlights the broad range of cellular processes that might be affected by ARG and NOS activity. In general, immune regulation by L-Arg metabolism is not antigen specific but requires that T cells are activated through their clonotypic T-cell receptor in order to be susceptible to these inhibitory circuits. In this chapter, the main processes of tumor immunity influenced by L-Arg metabolism will be discussed, along with the description of novel compounds that can deactivate these metabolic pathways in tumor-bearing hosts and thus help to restore immune reactivity against cancer.

Vincenzo Consolo is counted by many critics among the most significant voices in contemporary world literature. This book explores and outlines the reference theoretical basis of ecological networks within the international debate, focusing on how protected areas should no longer be considered as the sum of different components but rather as a network. The various European, transnational and national models of ecological networks/connections are analyzed on the basis of a detailed, updated study of relevant documents. The complex picture that emerges shows a wide range of reticular-ecological models within European plans and programs, but also many non-integrated experiences. The book subsequently examines the regulation of ecological networks/connections within planning instruments, explaining the critical points and referring to different ecological network models and specific local realities. Lastly, the book addresses two Italian case studies regarding the different normative and planning frameworks, both at a national and regional level, and demonstrating not only how ecological networks/connections can be structured within plans, but also how these networks/connections represent the core element of territory development and preservation. Although the semirigidity concept was introduced many years ago, steel structures are usually designed by assuming that beam-to-column joints are either pinned or rigid. Theses assumptions allow a great simplification in structural analysis and design-but they neglect the true behavior of joints.
