Victor Erlich was born in 1914, at the threshold of what the great Russian poet Anna Akhmatova called "the real twentieth century," in Petrograd, a place indelibly marked by that century's violent dislocations and upheavals. His story, begun on the eve of the First World War and taking him through Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Germany, and the U. S. Originally published in 1969, this book consists of a revised version of Dr Chadwick's section on the oral literature of the Turkic peoples in The Growth of Literature with supplementary material on the results of research in the Soviet Union by Professor Victor Zhirmunsky. This literature is of the greatest interest and variety, and not excessively 'strange' to readers of European oral literature. It was produced by nomadic peoples with well-developed traditions of narrative heroic poetry. Dr Chadwick paraphrases and analyses the more important epics; and Professor Zhirmunsky adds a study on epic songs and their singers on the processes of oral transmission. This is a fascinating study that will be of particular interest to scholars of comparative literature and of the origins of literature generally; but it should also be read by anthropologists and scholars of folklore.
This book deals with general quantitative regularities of the alteration of evolutionary and reconstruction (critical) periods of development. An equation and a model of development are introduced which generalize a wide range of commonly accepted models, allowing the analysis of the characteristics of processes occurring on different structural levels of natural system organization. On the basis of this model, a hierarchy of critical constants has been established, applicable to, for example, geological history, cyclicity in the individual development of animals, structures of population and ecological systems, as well as to the perception of acoustical signals by man.
