The Tactician’s Handbook In the late 1990s, American publisher Pickard & Son released five books, each dedicated to a unique tactical theme, and each with approximately 100 pages. Written by the late Russian correspondence master Victor Charushin, the books were Alekhine’s Block, Combination Cross, Lasker’s Combination, Mitrofanov’s Deflection, and The Steeplechase. They were very well-received by chessplayers everywhere. And, in fact, Charushin had written two more books in the series, Domination, and Less Common Combinations, but these were not released. For this edition of The Tactician’s Handbook, German grandmaster Karsten Müller has carefully reviewed and then selected the material he thought most enlightening. Thirteen young people, all college students were arrested in 1944 in Moscow by the Soviet State security. They were charged with an attempt to assassinate Stalin. All of them were sentenced to different terms of forced labor in GULAG and three of them paid with their lives. A participant and a survivor of this affair, Victor Levenstein, tells us about this so called case in his memoir. The majority of the arrested were “children of the enemies of the People” – their parents where victims of Stalin’s purges of nineteen thirties. Their friendship began in the early school years in the privileged school in Moscow, where children of Stalin, Molotov and Soviet cultural elite where among the students. The State security learned about this group of independently thinking young people and fabricated a case of “The anti-Soviet terrorist youth group planning comrade Stalin’s assassination”. During the investigation the majority of the arrested were subjected to the physical and psychological torture. They “confessed” to the anti-Soviet activity and seven of them to the preparation of the assassination of Stalin. Interrogators concocted an adventure story of the assassination preparations featuring an apartment from the window of which the “villains” were going to shoot Stalin. The book tells us about the interrogations in the infamous Lubianka, State Security prison where Mr. Levenstein and his friends spent almost a year. The machinery of the interrogation techniques is described in detail, explaining how they were forced to implicate themselves. We learn about the life in interrogation and transitional prisons, labor camps and exile, about the fascinating people the author came across on his “journey”. One of them was Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, whom the author met at Ekibastus penal camp – the camp, where the action of Solzhenitsyn’s novel “One day in life of Ivan Denisovich” takes place. The Russian version of the book “Tobacco smoke over the bunks…” was published in Moscow in 2009 by the prestigious publishing house “Russki Put’”. The book presentation at the Solzhenitsyn’s library-foundation was a significant cultural event in Moscow. The Russian TV dedicated a segment to it on the channel “Kul’tura” (Culture) and on the Sunday program “News of the week”. Radio broadcasts were also dedicated to the book including a program on the radio station “Liberty” for broadcast to Europe. Several positive book reviews were published in the Russian press. A condensed version of the book appeared in the Russian language literary and political magazine “Continent”, published in Moscow and Paris. In the preface to the published chapters the magazine’s editorial board wrote: “Victor Levenstein’s narration supplements books of A. Solzhenitsyn, V. Shalamov, E. Ginzburg with new very important details and facts, helping us imagine and understand the criminal machinery of repression created by Lenin and Stalin.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower and Nikita Khrushchev presided over a pivotal period in Soviet-American relations. The ongoing Korean War and the lack of an American ambassador in Moscow illustrate the strain in Soviet-American relations at the start of Eisenhower's presidency, but things changed after Stalin died only 44 days later. Victor Israelyan was a senior ambassador in the Soviet Foreign Ministry when the armies of Egypt and Syria invaded Israeli-occupied territory on October 6, 1973. Critical to the outcome of this conflict were the Soviet Union and the United States, whose diplomatic maneuverings behind the scenes eventually ended what came to be known as the Yom Kippur War. During the crisis, however, tensions between the superpowers nearly escalated into nuclear war. Israelyan is the first Soviet official to give us a firsthand account of what actually happened inside the Kremlin during these three important weeks in 1973. Israelyan's account is a fascinating mixture of memoir, anecdotes, and historical reporting. The book presents solutions to a complex of internal and external problems of electromagnetics associated with the development of theory, construction of mathematical models and the development of rigorous methods for calculating the electrodynamic characteristics of combined vibrator-slot structures. This book considers computer vision to be an integral part of the artificial intelligence system. The core of the book is an analysis of possible approaches to the creation of artificial vision systems, which simulate human visual perception. Much attention is paid to the latest achievements in visual psychology and physiology, the description of the functional and structural organization of the human perception mechanism, the peculiarities of artistic perception and the expression of reality. Computer vision models based on these data are investigated. They include the processes of external data analysis, internal environmental model synthesis, and the generating of behavioristic responses based on external and internal models comparison. Computer vision system evolution resulting from environmental effects is also considered. In Bilayer Lipid Membranes. Structure and Mechanical Properties the authors use new methods of measurement, which they have themselves developed, to present an analysis of the relation between membrane structure and viscoelastic properties, in particular in the transversal direction. Hianik and Passechnik's approach is fundamentally different from the usual one, in that they analyze lipid bilayer dynamics during various modes of deformation, arriving at a new, `three-layer' model that accounts for the great heterogeneity of biomembranes. The macroscopic parameters of membranes have been measured using a wide variety of methods, leading to a discussion of the correlations between the parameters. There is also an extensive discussion of the dynamic changes in mechanical properties of lipid bilayers in the course of conformational transition of integral proteins. During the conformational changes of proteins, the structure of a bilayer undergoes a transition, reaching a new, stable membrane state.
