Dear Human Race, It is with much regret, and a huge sigh of frustration, that I am writing this letter. For generations you have been taking our goodwill for granted but it behoves me, as a representative for my species, to say 'enough is enough'. You are unpredictable and inconsistent, often behaving in a way that is illogical to us and frankly unhygienic (all that touching!). I believe the modern phrase is 'You just don't get me!' Well, no more. My fellow felines and I have put pen to paper and paw to keyboard to write a series of letters that I believe will put you on the path to understanding where you've gone wrong. We feel we have covered most of your most common errors - from the food you give us (both the lack of quality and quantity) and your insistence on having other cats (and even dogs) in the house, to your bizarre toilet habits and our obsession with your socks. Consider this your performance review from cats... and you don't come out well. Yours sincerely, Sidney Fishbone, Esq.

Settlement Sociology in the Progressive Years claims for sociology a lost history and paradigm only recently acknowledged for shaping the American sociological tradition. Williams and MacLean trace the key works of early scholar activists through the leading settlement houses in Chicago, New York and Boston. The roots of sociology as a public enterprise for social reform are restored to the canon through early research, teaching and social advocacy. The settlement paradigm of “neighborly relations” combining the visions of social gospelers and first-wave feminists will resonate for a renewed public sociology today. Key to this paradigm was the movement to "settle" in neighborhoods and become active in the struggle for social change in a period of rapid industrialization, immigration, and urbanization.
The high street is in crisis. How did we get here and what happens next? The global pandemic has made the crisis immeasurably worse but it wasn’t the cause. The crisis was already raging in 2019 with thousands of store closures. Large retailers became complacent and failed to respond to changing consumer behaviour. Town centres are the victims of these changes rather than the cause of them. To understand the current crisis and how it might be addressed, this book takes a long view of retailing based on a hundred case studies. It looks at the way town centres responded to previous crises and explores current trends affecting town centres and how places are responding. The message is optimistic: adaptable town centres can once more become the diverse, characterful, independent places that existed before they were homogenised by big retail. Explore the past – understand the present – find a better future.

Many of Dorothy’s recipes are featured in their original form, such as the long forgotten Devilled Bananas and wartime Potato Gateau. A fresh argument for rioting and looting as our most powerful tools for dismantling white supremacy. Looting -- a crowd of people publicly, openly, and directly seizing goods -- is one of the more extreme actions that can take place in the midst of social unrest. Even self-identified radicals distance themselves from looters, fearing that violent tactics reflect badly on the broader movement. But Vicky Osterweil argues that stealing goods and destroying property are direct, pragmatic strategies of wealth redistribution and improving life for the working class -- not to mention the brazen messages these methods send to the police and the state. All our beliefs about the innate righteousness of property and ownership, Osterweil explains, are built on the history of anti-Black, anti-Indigenous oppression. From slave revolts to labor strikes to the modern-day movements for climate change, Black lives, and police abolition, Osterweil makes a convincing case for rioting and looting as weapons that bludgeon the status quo while uplifting the poor and marginalized. In Defense of Looting is a history of violent protest sparking social change, a compelling reframing of revolutionary activism, and a practical vision for a dramatically restructured society.

A searing, inventive memoir that interrogates misogyny, heroism and women's power in an often-unsafe world through the lens of Vicky's Foster's own traumatic background. How do you get close to people when the people close to you keep shattering your world? Vicky Foster thought she'd finally escaped violence when her abusive ex-partner was murdered. Vicky was 25. She tried to draw a line under the past and move on with her life. This meant overcoming PTSD, trusting people again, building her career and ultimately, learning to return to herself. But, 16 years later, the past came crashing down on her, when one of her ex-partner's murderers hit the headlines. This time, as the 'hero' of the 2019 London Bridge terrorist attack. Lyrical and raw, It Happened Like This is a book about misogyny in all its forms, about heroism and villainy, about class and the climate of neglect created by austerity, but most importantly it's a book about women and their power, explored through the prism of Vicky's story.

We've all had one, whether we like it or not. No, it's not a bad date, a pimple that will not go away, or an annoying mother-in-law. It's a childhood. Who hasn't hung helplessly from the chin-up bar in grade school during the annual Presidential Fitness Test or magically transformed into a forensic pathologist during a frog dissection in seventh grade biology class or, worse yet, endured an uncomfortable birds and bees lesson from their parents? In her third book in the Wacky Womanhood series, Vicky DeCoster shares her latest compilation of hilarious essays that look back to a simpler time when trying new things was a way of life; bullies ruled like kings; and parents reveled in torturing tiny versions of themselves. As DeCoster recalls her side-splitting childhood, she also shares inspirational life lessons learned along the way, encouraging others to look at their own youth in a completely different way. Women have always been the muses who inspire the creativity of men, but how do women become the creators of art themselves? This was the challenge faced by Latin American women who aspired to write in the 1920s and 1930s. Though women's roles were opening up during this time, women writers were not automatically welcomed by the Latin American literary avant-gardes, whose male members viewed women's participation in tertulias (literary gatherings) and publications as uncommon and even forbidding. How did Latin American women writers, celebrated by male writers as the "New Eve" but distrusted as fellow creators, find their intellectual homes and fashion their artistic missions? In this innovative book, Vicky Unruh explores how women writers of the vanguard period often gained access to literary life as public performers. Using a novel, interdisciplinary synthesis of performance theory, she shows how Latin American women's work in theatre, poetry declamation, song, dance, oration, witty display, and bold journalistic self-portraiture helped them craft their public personas as writers and shaped their singular forms of analytical thought, cultural critique, and literary style. Concentrating on eleven writers from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela, Unruh demonstrates that, as these women identified themselves as instigators of change rather than as passive muses, they unleashed penetrating critiques of projects for social and artistic modernization in Latin America.
Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) Bonheur was the oldest of four artistic children born to the French landscape painter Raymond Bonheur. Rosa began sketching and sculpting animals at an early age and used her interest in animals to help her learn to read and write. She would sketch an animal for each letter of the alphabet and perfected her form by visiting butcher shops and cattle markets in Paris to achieve anatomically correct likenesses. Her 1853 masterpiece, The Horse Fair, brought her worldwide recognition, and she was the first female artist to be awarded the cross of the Legion of Honour in France. She retired at the edge of the Fontainbleu Forest with a menagerie that included gazelles, lions and other exotic animals.
In the making for more than fifty years, Whisper of Hope, Cry of Despair, by author Vicky Bedi, chronicles how, throughout her lifetime, she has been molded by the life experiences of both her mother and father. This story is important because it tells about Slavic immigrants coming to the New World during the first decade of the twentieth century, offering details about how they lived and the adversities they faced. It discusses the murder of Bedi’s paternal grandfather in 1917 and the resulting shame, guilt, and loss of family for her father and his brother. It shares the suicide of her maternal grandfather, who couldn’t bear the loss of the Czar’s Russia and who couldn’t face the shame and guilt of familial incest. Finally, it tells of the intergenerational effects of child abuse, such as further child abuse and spouse abuse. In Whisper of Hope, Cry of Despair, Bedi narrates her story to help other victims of family situations accept parents and family without judgment and to record the empathy and peace she’s found.
