Utah Art, Utah Artists surveys 150 years of the extraordinary talent and achievements of Utah artists. This overview ranges from the sublime paintings of a resourceful ranching woman to the polished work of artists trained in Paris, Rome, and New York. It highlights the rural and the cosmopolitan, the traditional and the modern, the concrete and the transcendent that encompass Utah art. This sweeping exhibition showcases 300 works of art by 220 artists painstakingly compiled from a list of 10,000 Utah artists. Selection was made in light of five considerations: quality of the work; critical acclaim and professional success of the artist; belated but deserved recognition of the artist; young emerging artists who are the future of art in Utah; and a representative sampling of periods, styles, mediums and geographic regions of the state. One hundred twenty of the artworks are reproduced in rich color, most illustrated for the first time. Selected works and biographical material on the artists are presented chronologically, providing a perspective on Utah art that will make this volume an essential reference for collectors, scholars, and enthusiasts of Utah art. Vern G. Swanson, Ph.D., has been the director of the Springville Museum of Art since 1980. He has written numerous books and articles and he is coauthor with Drs. R. S. Olpin and W. C. Seifrit of Utah Art, Utah Painting and Sculpture, and Utah Arts. Robert S. Olpin, Ph.D., a University of Utah Professor of Art History, has become a familiar face on his eighteen-part television course on the Art Life in Utah series. He has acted as a consultant to such organizations as the National Gallery and Vose Galleries. Donna L. Poulton, Ph.D., is the Assistant Curator of Exhibitions at the Springville Museum if Art. For the past three years she has been documenting and chronicling, on film, the lives and works of Utah artists. Janie L. Rogers, M.A., wrote her master's thesis on Utah architecture. Rogers is a founding member of the Associated Art Historians, Inc., Salt Lake City.

During the late 1950s and the 1960s, Vern Overbye and John Brauer joined with four other engineers of diverse backgrounds at A.O. Smith's corporate headquarters in Milwaukee to embark on an unprecedented and unanticipated path of innovation. Each had an advanced degree and, more importantly, each had an entrepreneurial spirit. With their forward-looking, optimistic manager at Smith's Data Systems Division, Robert Y. Bodine, they built a path-breaking business in the fledgling technology of finite element analysis that is still impacting the fortunes of the companies that became their customers. Together they helped transform a rarefied aerospace technology into a design tool now used to design in a staggering variety of applications and industries. "I will propose that Data Systems should be particularly bullish in adaptive creative technology-it simply pays, but, in fact, growth, not to say survival, depends on it." Robert Y. Bodine, January 1978
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is an influential church in the United States and beyond. Yet, it remains a mysterious entity to those who are not members. Now we find the church contains mysteries unknown to even those who call it their spiritual home. In Will the Real Mormons Stand Up and Sound the Alarm? author Vern Porter shares his discovery of the potentially seamier side of the church. After nearly twenty years in the church, Porter was doing part-time missionary work when he ran across members obsessed with polygamy and racism. When he confronted them, the treatment he received led him to reexamine anti-Mormon accusations he had experienced from Baptists. For several years, he studied the Scriptures and history of the church, including the Journal of Discourses, a twenty-six-volume record of conference talks from the early 1850s to the mid-1880s. As he researched the church, it became obvious to him that its scholars and leaders had covered up details of Mormon doctrine and history from the churchs early days in Utah. Although he left the church for twenty-five years, he returned after experiencing some hard-to-forget dreams. Though most of his friends received him with open arms, some tried to drive him away. In Will the Real Mormons Stand Up and Sound the Alarm? Porter pulls back the curtain and shares some of his real concerns about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, especially concerning more radical members and beliefs.
This book is dedicated to the hundreds of Florida senior citizens who, each day, unselfishly give of their time, expertise and energy assisting their peers in righting the wrongs suffered as victims of those unscrupulous individuals who go about cheating the elderly.
With the hilarious “instant cult classic” Seagalogy: A Study of the Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal, Vern wrote a book that shook the very foundations of film criticism, broke their wrists, and then threw them through a window. Now he’s back, and this time he’s got all of ‘the films of badass cinema’ in his sights... From Die Hard to The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Transformers to Mary Poppins, Vern has an opinion on everything, and he’s not shy about sharing them...

In the fall of 2009, with the publication of her #1 national bestselling memoir, Sarah Palin had the privilege of meeting thousands of everyday Americans on her extraordinary 35-city book tour. Inspired by these encounters, her new book, America By Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag, celebrates the enduring strengths and virtues that have made this country great. Framed by her strong belief in the importance of family, faith, and patriotism, the book ranges widely over American history, culture, and current affairs, and reflects on the key values-both national and spiritual-that have been such a profound part of Governor Palin's life and continue to inform her vision of America's future. Written in her own refreshingly candid voice, America By Heart will include selections from classic and contemporary readings that have moved her-from the nation's founding documents to great speeches, sermons, letters, literature and poetry, biography, and even some of her favorite songs and movies. Here, too, are portraits of some of the extraordinary men and women she admires and who embody her deep love of country, her strong rootedness in faith, and her profound love and appreciation of family. She will also draw from personal experience to amplify these timely (and timeless) themes-themes that are sure to inspire her numerous fans and readers all across the country.
