Verena Berger lives the typical European twentieth century immigrant dream. In 1979, she and her husband, Willy, moved - speaking little to no English - from a densely populated Switzerland to Central British Columbia. Verenaĺs collection of creative non-fiction writings include their experiences as new Canadians living on a remote rural property - where they accumulated a yard full of goats and pigs before building a fence, and had children before running water - and other comical ESL (English as a second language) situations. Immigrants as well as second or third-generation Canadians will relate to these humorous and heartwarming recollections.
Transparency and Dissimulation analyses the configurations of ancient neoplatonism in early modern English texts. In looking closely at poems and prose writings by authors as diverse as Thomas Wyatt, Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, John Donne, Edward Herbert, Andrew Marvell, Thomas Traherne, Thomas Browne and, last not least, Aphra Behn, this study attempts to map the outlines of a neoplatonic aesthetics in literary practice as well as to chart its transformative potential in the shifting contexts of cultural turbulency and denominational conflict in 16th- and 17th-century England. As part of a “new”, contextually aware, aesthetics, it seeks to determine some of the functions neoplatonic structures – such as forms of recursivity or certain modes of apophatic speech – are capable of fulfilling in combination and interaction with other, heterogeneous or even ideologically incompatible elements. What emerges is a surprisingly versatile poetics of excess and enigma, with strong Plotinian and Erigenist accents. This appears to need the traditional ingredients of petrarchism or courtliness only as material for the formation of new and dynamic wholes, revealing its radical metaphysical potential above all in the way it helps to resist the easy answers – in religion, science, or the fashions of libertine love.
This book takes an innovative approach to the study of memories of transit and exile in Portugal between 1933 and 1945 in artistic media. Informed by contemporary debates within memory and translation studies, it develops a translational perspective on transcultural memory and explores its ethical implications. This study provides an in-depth analysis of Daniel Blaufuks’s inter-art project Sob Céus Estranhos, Domingos Amaral’s novel Enquanto Salazar Dormia and João Canijo’s documentary Fantasia Lusitana. It examines the heterocultural networks of signification that these artistic media mobilize to implicate the presence of World War II refugees in Portugal in contemporary negotiations of communality. By approaching memory through a translational lens on culture, this book also offers new perspectives on remediation, memory transfer and the ethical dimensions of remembrance in the context of transcultural memory and migration.
Verena Anna Berger investigates the question to what extent credit default swap spreads are impacted by an increase of government bond yields within the European area. In the first step, these spreads are computed with the help of the Hull-White model to demonstrate the theoretical calculation. The main findings which are calculated by using the Fontana-Scheicher model show that a negative impact on credit default swap spreads is observed based on the analysed data. However, there is high variation between the analysed countries so that a country-specific evaluation instead of a general review is recommended by the author.
The concept of gender mainstreaming has experienced an unexpected boom in the European Union and beyond since the United Nations World Conference of Women in Beijing in 1995. Starting from the evolution of gender mainstreaming, this book examines the extent to which gender mainstreaming can be regarded as an innovation and as an institution in a complex organisation like the European Commission. By ensuring that the effects on both genders of all policies and organisational processes are taken into account, gender mainstreaming seeks to bring what are often marginalised as ́women ́s concerns ́ into the mainstream of the analysis. Gender mainstreaming is often regarded as a paradigm shift compared to previous concepts of equal treatment and positive action programmes.
In recent times, the phrase ’personalised medicine’ has become the symbol of medical progress and a label for better health care in the future. However, a controversial debate has developed around whether these promises of better, more personal and more cost-efficient medicine are realistic. This book brings together leading researchers from across Europe and North America, from both normative and empirical disciplines, who take a more critical view of the often encountered hype associated with personalised medicine. Partially drawing on a four year collaborative research project funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research, the book presents a multidisciplinary debate on the current state of research on the ethical, legal and social implications of personalised medicine. At a time when future health care is a topic of much discussion, this book provides valuable policy recommendations for the way forward. This study will be of interest to researchers from various disciplines including philosophy, bioethics, law and social sciences.
(Un) Civil Society and Political Change in Indonesia provides critical analysis of Indonesia’s civil society and its impact on the country’s democratization efforts that does not only take the classical, pro-democratic actors of civil society into account but also portrays uncivil groups and their growing influence on political processes. Beittinger-Lee offers a revised categorization of civil society, including a model to define the sphere of ‘uncivil society’ more closely and to identify several subcategories of uncivil society. This is the first book to portrays various uncivil groups in Indonesia, ranging from vigilantes, militias, paramilitaries, youth groups, civil security task forces and militant Islamic (and other religious) groups, ethnonationalist groups to terrorist organizations and groups belonging to organized crime. Moreover, it provides the reader with an overview of Indonesia’s history, its political developments after the democratic opening, main improvements under the various presidents since Suharto’s fall, constitutional amendments and key reforms in human rights legislation. This book will be of interest to upper level undergraduates, postgraduates and academics in political science and Southeast Asian studies.
Socially organized animals have to synchronize the timing and directions of their movement decisions, in order to maintain group cohesion. To what extent social and environmental mechanisms trigger behavioural synchronization is still poorly understood. When housing management restricts space availability or predetermines feeding schedules, synchronization may develop as a random phenomenon due to external cues. This thesis investigated social and environmental determinants of behavioural synchronization in horses and sheep. Deeper understanding of what constitutes behavioural synchronization is essential in order to adequately classify behavioural changes related to synchronization, and to furthermore enable predictions of management problems in group housing of animals.
Do you have data on occupant behaviour, indoor environment or energy use in buildings? Are you interested in statistical analysis and modelling? Do you have a specific (research) question and dataset and would like to know how to answer the question with the data available? Statistical Modelling of Occupant Behaviour covers a range of statistical methods and models used for modelling energy- and comfort-related occupant behaviour in buildings. It is a classical textbook on statistics, including many practical examples related to occupant behaviour that are either taken from real research problems or adapted from such. The main focus is traditional statistical techniques based on the likelihood principle that can be applied to occupant behaviour modelling, including: General, generalised linear and survival models Mixed effect and hierarchical models Linear time series and Markov models Linear state space and hidden Markov models Illustration of all methods using occupant behaviour examples implemented in R The built environment affects occupants who live and work in it, and occupants affect the built environment by adapting it to their needs – for example, by adapting their indoor environments by interacting with building components and systems. These adaptive behaviours account for great uncertainty in the prediction of building energy use and indoor environmental conditions. Occupant behaviour is complex and multi-disciplinary but can be successfully modelled using statistical approaches. Statistical Modelling of Occupant Behaviour is written for researchers and advanced practitioners who work with real-world applications and modelling of occupant data. It describes the kinds of statistical models that may be used in various occupant behaviour modelling research. It gives a theoretical overview of these methods and then applies them to the study of occupant behaviour using readily replaceable examples in the R environment that are based on actual and experimental data.
This book takes a new look at the 'spatial turn' in French cultural and critical theory since 1968. It examines how key thinkers (inc. Henri Lefebvre, Michel de Certeau, Jean Baudrillard, Marc Augé, Paul Virilio, Bruno Latour and Etienne Balibar) reconsider the experience of space in the midst of considerable political and economic turmoil.
Verena Brenner provides a systematic approach for the investigation, measurement, and management of supply chain disruptions. A terminological, theoretical and practical basis for the analysis of supply chain disruptions is developed to create a consistent and transferable research framework. To better understand why certain supply chains are more susceptible to disruptions than others, this framework is then tested empirically in cold chain logistics. Based on a survey with approximately 60 supply chain specialists from production, distribution and retail of food and pharmaceuticals, drivers for resilience and vulnerability of supply chains are identified by comparing how partnerships and transactions were organized. Thereby, strategies for assuring the robustness of supply chains are depicted and connections to company-internal risk management are highlighted.
Compiling columns of numbers on typewriter paper, Hanne Darboven (1941-2009) catalogued time. Probably the most important German Conceptual artist, Darboven added, cross-totaled, wrote down, recorded. In her hands, notated moments in time coalesced into works of art. This collage-like biography focuses on a fascinatingly androgynous female figure, setting out on a search for the traces of her life. Born into an upper-class family in Hamburg, Darboven experienced her artistic awakening in New York in the 1960s and ultimately carved out a stellar career as an artist. Here, transcribed conversations, narrative passages and interviews with fellow artists such as Lawrence Weiner, Carl Andre, Joseph Kosuth, Kasper König and Rainer Langhans are interspersed with one another. This intimate perspective demonstrates Darboven's artistic development and enables readers to more easily access her influential oeuvre.
