Book 1 in Ved Mehta's Continents of Exile series. Nearly 50 years in the making, Continents of Exile is one of the great works of twentieth-century autobiography: the epic chronicle of an Indian family in the twentieth century. From 1930s India to 1950s Oxford and literary New York in the 1960s-80s, this is the story of the post-colonial twentieth century, as uniquely experienced and vividly recounted by Ved Mehta. On its surface, Daddyji serves as a lucid biographical portrait of Amolak Ram Mehta, an esteemed Indian public servant, written by his son. But as Ved Mehta's story unwinds, it becomes apparent that something else is being recreated - the intricacies and intimacies of a lost world, of pre-Partition Lahore.
Book 3 in Ved Mehta's Continents of Exile series. Ved continues the story of Ved Mehta's two earlier memoirs, Daddyji, a biographical portrait of his father, and Mamaji, an exploration of his mother and her history. The focus here turns toward Mehta's childhood, his education in an Indian orphanage for the blind, and the general experience of blind people in India.
The book is about a village boy, who got rearing under the patronage of God-fearing mother and disciplinarian father, who was running a grocery shop in the nearby town. Struggling with the least facilities in the village and later in the nearby town, the boy could become lecturer in a degree college. Though he lost his job, the young boy was determined not to give up and succeeded in getting job in NCERT- The National level body. The book has many interesting innovations in education that are discussed including a chapter on the infamous Bhopal Gas tragedy of 1984. Later, the young teacher got an invitation from Manchester University for joining the course on EPPAM, thus initiating exposure to culture and functioning of a developed country. Thus adding anecdotes from U.K. Paris, New York, Sydney, Gold Coast, Auckland, and San Francisco, the autobiography also explores the Covid- 19 pandemic, and proposes meditation as conceived during Kriya Yoga.
This definitive collection of Ved Mehta’s work contains excerpts from nearly all his writings, many of which first appeared in the New Yorker. It begins with his first book, the classic autobiography highlighting his blindness, Face to Face, and features his iconic books about India and his family saga, Continents of Exile. Each entry comes with a reflection by Mehta. Authoritative and illuminating, the book is not just an introduction to this seminal author but also a passionate record of a writer looking back upon his own work.
Blind since the age of four, Ved Mehta led a lonely and turbulent childhood in India until he was accepted to the Arkansas School for the Blind, to which he flew alone at fifteen. America and the school changed his life, leading to degrees at Oxford and Harvard Universities and a fruitful writing career. Face to Face (1957), Mehta’s first book, is the author’s autobiography touching upon childhood, blindness and remaking himself. It remains one of his most beloved works.
Book 4 in Ved Mehta's Continents of Exile series. Set against the distant storm of the Second World War and the waning light of British Raj, Ved Mehta's brilliant memoir Ledge Between the Streams tells of an Indian childhood and the coming to terms with growing blindness: how, despite his disability, he learned English, Braille, horseback riding, bicycling, touch typing, and roller skating.
Kashmiri Lal Chawla joins the Bank of Polampur as a clerk and is posted to different cities and offices, where he confronts bizarre situations and odd characters. Nothing escapes him, neither the idiosyncrasies of the people he meets inside or outside the bank, nor their doings or intents; he presents these to the reader in simple, everyday language, spicing it up with his dry wit. Through these amusing anecdotes that can be enjoyed by readers of all age groups and from all walks of life, Kashmiri Lal exposes the sorry state of affairs in the bank; he diagnoses the shortcomings, contradictions and loopholes in the system and also offers solutions, without becoming preachy. As a satire on the Indian banking industry, this is possibly a first, using tongue-in-cheek humour to expose the corrupt and ineffectual system prevailing in public-sector banks in specific, and government departments at large. The author has an intimate knowledge of Indian banking, so this novel also becomes a record of the changing scenario of the banking sector in the country, over the last forty years.
Book 2 in Ved Mehta's Continents of Exile series. Translating individual experience into the universal, Mehta recounts the story of his mother's arranged marriage to a British-trained doctor and, by extension, of an ancient Indian family's struggle to find its place in a modern, rapidly changing world.
How do disturbed children see the world? How can we understand their difficulties? Most children have secret worlds but for some these worlds contain secrets that are both permanent and damaging. Originally published in 1992, this moving account of the secret lives of such vulnerable and disturbed children will enable professionals working with these children to find out what is going on in their minds – what they are thinking, what they are feeling, why they behave as they do. The contributors, all experts in their field at the time, show how vulnerable children can be assessed and how they can be helped most effectively.
The Dharmic traditions – Hinduism; Buddhism; Jainism; and Sikhism – share much in common; not with standing a number of variations among them. In all these traditions the scriptures; writings; and practices hold compassion as an integral part and a supreme virtue. This collection of essays by leading scholars from different disciplines aptly captures the essence of the religious and spiritual aspects of these traditions as they relate to compassion. Most of the authors are practitioner-scholars and are experts in their own disciplines; including sciences; humanities; social sciences; law; and religion. The experts met in September 2014 at Naropa University in Boulder; Colorado; for two days of lively deliberations under the auspices of the Uberoi Foundation for Religious Studies; which was established to spread awareness and promote understanding of the Dharmic traditions throughout North America. After addressing the ‘central and fundamental’ knowledge of these traditions and the common features and interactions among them; the essays here discuss compassion from various perspectives; such as relationship with the natural world and the environment; selfless service; and the treatment of animals. A final set of essays sheds light on the significance of compassion in each of these Dharmic traditions. As a comparative study; this is a unique collection from which a clear picture emerges of the central theme of moral and compassionate conduct in the Dharmic traditions. The last volume of Ved Mehta's Continents of Exile series. During the clamour of a New York dinner party, Mehta is startled to find his father crying on his mother's shoulders. This episode begins a painful and revealing voyage into his father's personal history. In stark prose, Mehta unravels a passionate, clandestine affair that bore quiet yet extraordinary consequences for himself and his family. Red Letters also serves as a brilliant exploration and a recreation of British India: its sights and sounds, its injustices and its secrecy.

The management of children with emotional and behavioural difficulties has always been a source of worry and concern to those who have to deal with them. Many such children are unpredictable, sometimes embarrassing, and can often make us feel helpless. We need to know more about them, and why they think, feel, and behave as they do. Originally published in 1990, the contributors to this volume bring a wide-ranging professional, practical approach to the problem, looking at it from the perspectives of psychiatry, psychology, psychotherapy, education, and social work. They underline the fact that such behaviour cannot be assessed in isolation from the context in which it occurs, and go beyond a mere description of maladjusted children to ask, ‘Maladjusted to what? And under what conditions?’ The social and family context is continually borne in mind. The book will still be of great interest to psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, teachers and social workers, as well as to students in those disciplines, who will find it an invaluable source to help them in their first encounters with child patients, clients and pupils.

Book 10 in Ved Mehta's Continents of Exile series. In lucid, sparse prose Mehta documents the twists and turns of a romantic history peppered with disappointment and anguish - that is until, in his search for self-understanding, he meets a surprising guide who shows the way toward new insights about himself and those he has loved.
The Upanishads are a great mine of strength for leading a tension-free and peaceful life. Today, most of us feel a lot of turmoil and tensions due to an overemphasis by leading a materialistic style of living. Meditation (Upasana) and looking into our pure consciousness and the Divine sitting inside us, has been forgotten altogether. Hence, the need for 'going back to Upanishads' has become quite relevant to be imbibed. There is also a growing urge in us to realize your 'true self,'' keenly feeling the need to make our knowledge flow into wisdom, and a yearning to know about the infinite and the eternal inspires us. The Upanishads form the core of Indian philosophy - a fantastic collection of writings, aptly described by Shri Aurobindo as "the supreme work of the Indian mind". The Upanishads are summits of thought on humanity and the universe. The Upanishads asks a man to cultivate righteousness (dharma) and to enjoy wealth (artha) and seek pleasures (kama), but with a sense of detachment. Meditation on OM and enquiry into our inner divine Self are some of the essentials of the Upanisads. Eleven Major Upanisads have been covered by Mr. Ved Bhatia in a lucid easy comprehensible style.
