In a technically sound yet highly accessible discussion of how our Earth's complex climate system works, Dennis Klocek takes the reader through various climate and weather patterns, using case studies of recent events and explaining terms and phenomena--all with the goal of helping us understand the Earth's soul, within which we live and develop as human beings. He describes and explains the earthly and extra-earthly forces behind weather patterns such as droughts, floods, and hurricanes, showing how larger patterns such as El Niño and La Niña develop and affect the complex systems that form weather events. An overly quantitative view of our world has led humankind mostly to dominate, subdue, and take from nature, categorizing "our Earth as a numerical rock, permeated by forces completely beyond the control of, and sometimes at direct odds with, human soul activity.... The focus of this book is the spiritual work in the "school"--the community--of Michael. What does this mean? At the end of the eighteenth century, the Archangel Michael revealed the new mystery that has manifested on Earth as spiritual science, or anthroposophy. Its essence involves the renewal of our knowledge of the mysteries of karma and human destiny. Those who are drawn to this school have a special relationship to the human faculty of thinking--their inner feeling for truth has the strength of iron. This feeling for truth helps them to become companions of Michael at the threshold of the spiritual world. These talks deal with the spiritual path of anthroposophy in its Christian Rosicrudian aspect. Tomberg speaks openly and honestly about meditation, the various stages of consciousness (imagination, inspiration, and intuition), the "guardian of the threshold," and the esoteric trials one encounters along the way. He concludes by describing the life of Rudolf Steiner as the life of a Christian initiate.

Because they were given to "pioneers" dedicated to opening a new Waldorf school, these talks are often considered one of the best introductions to Waldorf education. Steiner shows the necessity for teachers to work on themselves first, in order to transform their own inherent gifts. He explains the need to use humor to keep their teaching lively and imaginative. Above all, he stresses the tremendous importance of doing everything in the knowledge that children are citizens of both the spiritual and the earthly worlds. And, throughout these lectures, he continually returns to the practical value of Waldorf education.
