This unique treatise expands on the philosophy of technology to argue for a psychology of technology based on the complex relationships between psychology, biology and technology, especially in the light of our relationships with our digital devices, our online lives, and our human experience. Drawing from disciplines ranging from philosophy and evolution to cognition and neuroscience, it examines myriad aspects of the brain’s creative development: the cognitive, sensory, and motor processes that enable technological progress and its resulting efficiencies and deficiencies along with our discomforts and pleasures. These experiences are key to behavioral and affective processes in technology, manifest in such diverse phenomena as multitasking, the shift in tech design from ergonomics to hedonomics, and the many types of online problem behaviors. Through these rich pages, readers can understand more deeply the history and future of human adjustment and adaptation in an environment intertwined with technology—and, with the ascendance of video games and virtual reality, new conceptions of the human self. Among the topics covered: Could we have remained a tech-devoid society? Technology, ergonomics and the non-executive functions of our body. New directions in brain-computer interface. From avatars and agents to virtual reality technology.“br> On measuring affective responses to objects. Psychology, technology, ethics, and culture. A timely lens on a field that will grow in importance as it shapes our existence, Psychology of Technology will be read and discussed by not only psychologists, social scientists, and behavioral scientists, but also by technology designers and developers and those in biotechnology.
The past few years have witnessed the emergence of steroid hormones as the wonder molecules which generate as much discussion in the scientific literature as they do in a typical living room. This transition has been a result of the tremendous public and scientific interest in the normal functioning of the hor mones as well their suggested involvement in several clinical conditions. In the recent past, notable scientific and technological advances have been made in the areas of contraception and regulation of fertility. Steroid receptors are the indis pensable mediators of hormonal responses and are complex protein molecules which appear to exist in association with other, yet undefined, proteins and/or factors. Receptors for vitamin D, retinoic acid and the thyroid hormones share structural similarities with steroid receptors, and the roster of this superfamily is still expanding. While our knowledge of the diversity and magnitude of steroid effects has advanced, the precise mode of steroid hormone action has alluded investigators. This volume brings together an international team of prominent investigators who discuss their most recent work on the basic and clinical aspects of steroid/nuclear receptors. The contributions represent updated versions of the invited presentations made at The Second Meadow Brook Conference on Steroid Receptors in Health and Disease. I am grateful to my colleagues on the Scientific Committee: Etienne Baulieu, Jack Gorski, Benita Katzenellenbogen, David Toft and James WittJiff, who provided the vision and guidance in formulating an out standing program.

This book provides an introduction to theories of fluids with microstruc ture, a subject that is still evolving, and information on which is mainly available in technical journals. Several approaches to such theories, employ ing different levels of mathematics, are now available. This book presents the subject in a connected manner, using a common notation and a uniform level of mathematics. The only prerequisite for understanding this material is an exposure to fluid mechanics using Cartesian tensors. This introductory book developed from a course of semester-length lec tures that were first given in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware and subsequently were given in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. The encouragement of Professor A. B. Metzner and the warm hospitality of the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Delaware, where the first set of notes for this book were prepared (1970-71), are acknowledged with deep appreciation. Two friends and colleagues, Dr. Raminder Singh and Dr. Thomas F. Balsa, made helpful suggestions for the improvement of this manuscript. The financial support provided by the Education Development Centre of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, for the preparation of the manuscript is gratefully acknowledged.

This book has been written keeping in mind syllabi of all Indian universities and optimized the contents of the book accordingly. These students are the book's primary audience. Cryptographic concepts are explained using diagrams to illustrate component relationships and data flows. At every step aim is to examine the relationship between the security measures and the vulnerabilities they address. This will guide readers in safely applying cryptographic techniques. This book is also intended for people who know very little about cryptography but need to make technical decisions about cryptographic security. many people face this situation when they need to transmit business data safely over the Internet. This often includes people responsible for the data, like business analysts and managers. as well as those who must install and maintain the protections, like information systems administrators and managers. This book requires no prior knowledge of cryptography or related mathematics. Descriptions of low-level crypto mechanisms focus on presenting the concepts instead of the details. This book is intended as a reference book for professional cryptographers, presenting the techniques and algorithms of greatest interest of the current practitioner, along with the supporting motivation and background material. It also provides a comprehensive source from which to learn cryptography, serving both students and instructors. In addition, the rigorous treatment, breadth, and extensive bibliographic material should make it an important reference for research professionals. While composing this book my intention was not to introduce a collection of new techniques and protocols, but rather to selectively present techniques from those currently available in the public domain.
