We are pleased to present the series A Textbook of Geography for Classes 6 to 8. This series has been written in strict conformity with the latest curriculum. The new curriculum deals with the development of children's understanding and appreciation of the world through a continuous interaction and exploration of the natural and human environment. It also aims at encouraging children to appreciate the interdependence of individuals, groups and communities and promotes a healthy respect for different types of cultures and ways of life of people around the world. This series endeavours to introduce the practical aspect of the subject, along with the text, through appropriate Diagrams, Pictures, Maps, Mind Maps (graphic organisers) and latest updates in the field of Geography. The series has been specially designed for the young learners to make the learning experience both enjoyable and informative. The nllant features of the booka In this sertas are - 1. Simple, lucid and student friendly language with scientific, logical and practical approach. 2. Precise and to-the-point contents are given to avoid unnecessary details. 3. Maps and diagrams have been kept simple and clear. 4. In most cases there are separate maps for different types of information instead of providing them in one map. 5. Map skills in regional geography play an important role in understanding the subject as well as laying foundation for the future Examinations. Teacher's Resource Book containing answers of the exercise given at the back of each lesson is available. 10. As per the latest edition in the Board Examinations for ICSE, MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) have been incorporated in the present set of books for 6th, 7th and 8th for exercise in the each chapter. The present set of books for classes 6, 7 and 8 is a continuation of my existing series of ICSE Geography for classes 9 and 10. This is a genuine effort to maintain the continuity in the ICSE syllabus from Classes 6 to 10 and prepare the students for the oncoming Board Examinations, right from class 6 onward. Sikkim has a population of 3,16,355 people (1981 census) and an area of 4276 Sq. Kms. Despite its small area, much ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversity is exhibited. Very few studies on the diverse tribal culture were undertaken in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. No anthropological studies have been undertaken on Sikkim since its integration with India. This work prepared under Man and Biosphere Programme of UNESCO is a significant contribution to the knowledge of this little known part of the mountain world. In the present book, Dr. Veena Bhasin, who carried out field work during 1981 to 1983 in North Sikkim records the complex patterns of the two diverse culture of the Lepchas and the Bhutias of North Sikkim. A micro approache has been used to explore indepth, the myriad aspects of life at Dzongu reserve habited by Pepaches and Lachen and Lachung valleys habited by Bhutias. The Social organisation, religious beliefs, economic structure and social control have been described in detail.

The bilingual relationship between the English and the Indian vernaculars has long been crucial to the construction of ideology as well as cultural and political hierarchies. Print was vital for colonial literacy; it was thereby instrumental in initiating a shift in the relation between 'high' and 'low' languages. Here, Dr Naregal examines the relationship between linguistic hierarchies, textual practices and power in colonial western India. Whereas most studies of colonialism focus on India's 'high' literary culture, this book looks at how local intellectuals exploited their 'middling' position through such initiatives as the establishment of newspapers and of influential channels of communication. How were the 'native' intelligentsia able to achieve a position of ideological influence? Dr Naregal shows that, despite their minority position, such people negotiated the arenas of education policy, the press and voluntary associations to advance their social class. In doing this, she sheds light on the process of self-definition among the Indian intelligentsia before anticolonial thinking articulated its hegemonic claims as a nationalistic discourse.
