Organic chemistry has played a vital role in the development of diverse molecules which are used in medicines, agrochemicals and polymers. Most ofthe chemicals are produced on an industrial scale. The attractive physical and mechanical properties of ordered intermetallic alloys have been recognized since early in this century. However, periodic attempts to develop intermetallics for structural applications were unsuc cessful, due in major part to the twin handicaps of inadequate low-temper ature ductility or toughness, together with poor elevated-temperature creep strength. The discovery, in 1979, by Aoki and Izumi in Japan that small additions of boron caused a dramatic improvement in the ductility of Ni3Al was a major factor in launching a new wave of fundamental and applied research on intermetallics. Another important factor was the issuance in 1984 of a National Materials Advisory Board reported entitled "Structural Uses for Ductile Ordered Alloys," which identified numerous potential defense-related applications and proposed the launching of a coordinated development program to gather engineering property and processing data. A substantial research effort on titanium aluminides was already underway at the Air Force Materials Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and, with Air Force support, at several industrial and university laboratories. Smaller programs also were under way at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, under Department of Energy sponsorship. These research efforts were soon augmented in the United States by funding from Department of Defense agencies such as Office of Naval Research and Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and by the National Science Foundation.

It was long ago that group analysis of differential equations became a powerful tool for studying nonlinear equations and boundary value problems. This analysis was especially fruitful in application to the basic equations of mechanics and physics because the invariance principles are already involved in their derivation. It is in no way a coincidence that the equations of hydrodynamics served as the first object for applying the new ideas and methods of group analysis which were developed by 1. V. Ovsyannikov and his school. The authors rank themselves as disciples of the school. The present monograph deals mainly with group-theoretic classification of the equations of hydrodynamics in the presence of planar and rotational symmetry and also with construction of exact solutions and their physical interpretation. It is worth noting that the concept of exact solution to a differential equation is not defined rigorously; different authors understand it in different ways. The concept of exact solution expands along with the progress of mathematics (solu tions in elementary functions, in quadratures, and in special functions; solutions in the form of convergent series with effectively computable terms; solutions whose searching reduces to integrating ordinary differential equations; etc. ). We consider it justifiable to enrich the set of exact solutions with rank one and rank two in variant and partially invariant solutions to the equations of hydrodynamics.

Although a few books dealing with some specialised aspects of regional planning have appeared in India, there has been no systematic treatment of the subject from the teaching angle, embracing the whole field of regional planning, drawing attention to to the work done by Indian scholars and focusing on Indian problems. Indian Erysiphaceae' is a monographic work on the powdery mildew fungi based on the teliomorphic stage collected on 86 different host species from various agroecological zones of Himachal Pradesh. So far, 22 genera and about 300 species of powdery mildew fungi have been described from India, but all is scattered in mycological literature. An attempt has been made to compile all the species reported from India. Each of the genus studied has been included in separate chapter. Besides, host index, fungus index and references, the species described in the present studies and those described from India have been presented in tabular form in the end alongwith the references. Camera lucida drawings and coloured microphotographs have also been provided. This monograph will provide a base for future compilations of the work on Indian Erysiphaceae and will be of great use to the students and researchers not only in India but abroad also.
