Spectral Problems Associated with Corner Singularities of Solutions to Elliptic Equations

This book focuses on the analysis of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions that describe singularities of solutions to elliptic boundary value problems in domains with corners and edges. The authors treat both classical problems of mathematical physics and general elliptic boundary value problems. The volume is divided into two parts: The first is devoted to the power-logarithmic singularities of solutions to classical boundary value problems of mathematical physics. The second deals with similar singularities for higher order elliptic equations and systems. Chapter 1 collects basic facts concerning operator pencils acting in a pair of Hilbert spaces. Related properties of ordinary differential equations with constant operator coefficients are discussed and connections with the theory of general elliptic boundary value problems in domains with conic vertices are outlined. New results are presented. Chapter 2 treats the Laplace operator as a starting point and a model for the subsequent study of angular and conic singularities of solutions. Chapter 3 considers the Dirichlet boundary condition beginning with the plane case and turning to the space problems. Chapter 4 investigates some mixed boundary conditions. The Stokes system is discussed in Chapters 5 and 6, and Chapter 7 concludes with the Dirichlet problem for the polyharmonic operator. Chapter 8 studies the Dirichlet problem for general elliptic differential equations of order 2m in an angle. In Chapter 9, an asymptotic formula for the distribution of eigenvalues of operator pencils corresponding to general elliptic boundary value problems in an angle is obtained. Chapters 10 and 11 discuss the Dirichlet problem for elliptic systems of differential equations of order 2 in an n-dimensional cone. Chapter 12 studies the Neumann problem for general elliptic systems, in particular with eigenvalues of the corresponding operator pencil in the strip $\mid {\Re} \lambda - m + /2n \mid \leq 1/2$. It is shown that only integer numbers contained in this strip are eigenvalues. Applications are placed within chapter introductions and as special sections at the end of chapters. Prerequisites include standard PDE and functional analysis courses.

This book contains the proceedings of a symposium held at the College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina, USA, 16-20 June 1986. The seed for this symposium arose from a group of physiologists, soil scientists and biochemists that met in Leningrad, USSR in July 1975 at the 12th Botanical Conference in a Session organized by Professor B. B • Vartepetian. This group and others later conspired to contribute to a book entitled Plant Life in Anaerobic Environments (eds. D.D. Hook and R.M.M. Crawford, Ann Arbor Science, 1978). Several contributors to the book suggested in 1983 that a broad-scoped symposium on wetlands would be useful (a) in facilitating communication among the diverse research groups involved in wetlands research (b) in bringing researchers and managers together and (c) in presenting a com-: prehensive and balanced coverage on the status of ecology and management of wetlands from a global perspective. With this encouragement, the senior editor organized a Plan ning Committee that encompassed expertise from many disciplines of wetland scientists and managers. This Committee, with input from their colleagues around the world, organized a symposium that addressed almost every aspect of wetland ecology and management.

This book was written to provide a clear and systematic sum mary of the principles of gynaecology in synoptic form. It is part of a three volume series, the first two volumes covering topics in undergraduate obstetricE! and neonatal medicine respectively. Where appropriate, fundamentals of related anatomy and physiology are also covered. It is primarily directed at under graduate medical students and midwives, but material useful as reference to doctors revising for further qualifications has been included. Although much of the content is organized in the form of lists, this book differs from the usual 'list' book in that cover age is full and systematic. Thus the text has been organized into the following subheadings, where appropriate: Definitions, Aetiology, Pathophysiology, Clinical features, Differential Diag nosis, Investigations, Treatment, and Prognosis. To avoid rep etition, certain clinical areas including ectopic pregnancy and abortion which have been covered in the earlier volumes are not included. Certain useful diagnostic lists are also provided, and, in pre paring the book, previous examination papers of the Univer sities of Oxford, Cambridge and London, as well as of the Central Midwives Board, were consulted. Illustrations have been specially prepared in the form of explanatory line drawings that are simple, and easy to memorize and reproduce. Although drug dosages were checked with care before going to press, changes in medical practice make it advisable to verify regimes and doses with the latest prescribing information and the pharmacopoeia, before use.
