Obsolete, brain dead, a failure in Afghanistan - NATO has never had to deal with such massive criticism. The timing is anything but good: in the new world disorder, Russia and China are challenging the West, international terrorism is on the rise, while democracy is in retreat around the world. Even in member states of the transatlantic alliance, the seductive lure of authoritarianism is increasing. Nevertheless, there is no reason to fear that NATO's success story has come to an end. NATO is not some old-fashioned military alliance that crumbles when member states' interests diverge. Rather, it is a political alliance in which sovereign states further develop their national interests into an overarching alliance interest. Its democratic values, the obligation to reach a consensus as well as its design as a marketplace where diplomats, civil servants and soldiers constantly exchange information in formal and informal discussion formats help here. This is the unique strength of NATO, which should be used more in the future. In the last chapters of his book, the author addresses the people in NATO and in the ministries of the member states. Regardless of whether they belong to the top management or work in the engine room - they make the difference. Given the re-nationalization tendencies, their task is not easy. This book argues that citizens have a moral right to decide by which criteria they grant migrants citizenship, as well as to control access to their territory in the first place. The author’s argument is based on a straightforwardly individualist and liberal starting point. One of the rights granted by liberalism is freedom of association, which also comprises the right not to associate with people with whom one does not want to associate. Thus, people can decide to collectively organize into an association pursuing certain goals; and subject to certain provisos, this gives rise to legitimate claims to space and territory in which they pursue these goals. The author shows that this right is far-reaching and robust, which entails an equally far-reaching and robust right to exclude. Moreover, he demonstrates that large-scale immigration from illiberal cultures tends to severely compromise the way of life, the values, and the institutions of liberal democracies in ways routinely ignored by apologists for multiculturalism. Crustaceans that are now called copepods have been known, not necessarily by that name, since Aristotle. Published reports of their post-embryonic development, however, date only from the last 250 years. This monograph is a first attempt to gather all published information about copepod post-embryonic development. Careful diagnoses of nauplius and copepodid allow comparisons of specific developmental stages among species. Changes from the last naupliar stage to the first copepodid stage are used to interpret the naupliar body. Body and limb patterning are discussed, and models of limb patterning are used to generate segment homologies for the protopod and both rami. Contributions of post-embryonic development to phylogenetic hypotheses are considered and suggestions for future studies are provided.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a topical issue in many countries. What are the drivers for the global spread of explicit CSR – practices that are demonstrated to the outside – even in countries where companies had addressed CSR implicitly? What catalyzes organizations to adopt CSR and how does their adoption influence other companies’ likelihood to adopt CSR? This book approaches the recent world-wide adoption of CSR practices as part of the global spread of management concepts. The trend to adopt CSR is examined among Japanese companies, because they have rapidly adopted CSR practices in the last two decades. Existing empirical research on CSR in Japan that has focused mainly on anecdotal evidence on a small number of outstanding companies is extended by employing both qualitative and quantitative empirical research methods. Analyzing drivers for the adoption of CSR practices, organizational characteristics of adopting companies, and how increasing adoption influences the likelihood to adopt provides insights into how Japanese institutions and stakeholders facilitated rapid CSR adoption and the process of CSR diffusion.

The human body is uniformly, both by specialists and patients, regarded as a machine too weak to fight cancer. But this is a misconception. First, without our immune system we would be overstretched by cancer cells within short term. Second, even in cases of late stage disease so-called spontaneous regressions and cures can happen. Spontaneous regressions are listed, but not explained in the scientific literature to this day. A careful look on case studies reveals that a majority of cases happened after a hefty feverish infection. Third, several epidemiologic studies show that a personal history with feverish infections reduces the likely-hood to develop cancer later. Meanwhile we know that a certain class of immune stimulating danger signals plays a role. PRRL, which are made by pathogens but not tumours, can induce an immune reaction against cancer cells. This essay investigates whether and how bacterial and viral PRRL substances could be used to treat and prevent cancer.
