Adults with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) or a suspected diagnosis often have hidden needs that go unmet by public services. This book describes and analyses the Kent ASC enablement approach, a short-term intervention led by occupational therapy to promote people with ASC becoming more self-aware and self-sufficient outside of public services. Designed to teach adults with ASC strategies for controlling their sensory, motor-processing and social-communication needs and preferences, this person-centred approach gives them greater self-management over their lives. The book also provides an overview of a range of both professional and self-help tools and technologies which can be used by adults with ASC to increase independence and wellbeing. Case-studies demonstrate the transformative effects of enablement on daily life for adults with ASC. The book also provides recommendation for building on the enablement approach.
The diagnostic assessment of writing is an important aspect of language testing which has often been neclected in the literature. However, it is an area which poses special challenges to practioners both in the classroom and in large-scale testing situations. This book presents a study which set out to develop and validate a rating scale specifically designed for the diagnostic assessment of writing in an academic English setting. The scale was developed by analysing a large number of writing performances produced by both native speakers of English and learners of English as an additional language. The rating scale was then validated using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study showed that a detailed data-based rating scale is more valid and more useful for diagnostic purposes than the more commonly used impressionistic rating scale.
SOCALLT '04 is the sixth publication of the series documenting the sessions presented during the annual conferences of the South Central Association for Language Learning Technology (SOCALLT). This publication is a record of the sessions presented during the 2004 conference held at the San Jacinto College Central in Pasadena, TX on 6-7 February, 2004. All authors are current members of the organization. Therefore, the need for detailed index informations allowing the performance of retrospective literature searches be comes more and more important. Volume 23/24-the second General Index of Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts - contains author and subject indexes to volumes II -14 and, respectively, 17-22. Thus, the astronomical and astrophysical literature of the whole five-year period 197 4 -1978 is cov ered by this volume.
