This report takes a critical look at the costs and benefits for individuals and families of turning to self-employment as a route out of economic disadvantage. Drawing on in-depth interviews with self-employed people, their partners and children, the report argues that self-employment is much more likely to be a household rather than an individual undertaking. It makes the case for the need to consider work-life balance in relation to the self-employed.

This bibliography presents a selection of the European literature on migration and intercultural education published in 1987. It is the first in a series of annual bibliographies of the relevant literature in this area, and is aimed at providing a valuable reference tool in this topical subject area. 1,050 titles have been selected for entry primarily on the basis of their relevance to the overall issue, but also taking into account their availability. Entries have been classified under the following main headings: -- migration processes -- education of migrants -- social and linguistic status of new ethnic communities. The main emphasis of the compilers in making the selection is on the consequences of cultural pluralisation for the various education systems involved, so that not only is the education of migrants and their families covered but the effects of intercultural education for all pupils is also taken into account. Titles are additionally classified on a geographical basis, and the volume is comprehensively cross-indexed. This bibliography is intended to facilitate a broader knowledge of the discussion currently taking place at a European level. It will provide an indispensible reference source for all educational practitioners, academic researchers, administrators and policy makers concerned with intercultural education. For ease of use, the Foreword and the main classification headings have been given in German, English and French.
