Drug use she said is a leveler. It brings people down the lowest common denominator. What a concept! How right on is that statement! Drugs affect the rich, the poor, the famous, and the infamous in every country and nationality on this earth. If you are on the upscale end drugs keep you there. The users life contribution to humanity is likely to be nothing, but the cost to the user, their family and friends in physical, emotional, and fiscal terms expensive and of course dangerous, because it may also kill you. I have put these observations into this novel hoping that readers can identify with the characters, watch them grow and suffer through the consequences of their actions unaware of the effect of their lives and on others.

Dealing with everyday events, such as break enters, suicides, drug overdoses, thefts, home invasions, gang rapes and murders. All are seen through the eyes of a first responder and an investigator. The book is essentially in two parts - reflecting the author's working life. The first deals with time as a general duties officer. Here the events occur rapidly leaving many questions to be asked - who were these people, what were their backgrounds, what happened. However, it reveals that a general duties cop often does not know these answers. He/she just has to deal with the event, on the spot, the best they can. The second part of the book describes the author's life as a detective. Here we begin to be able to understand the background to the crimes and what happened after the initial event. It is where we meet some very undesirable people - a group of teenagers who gang rape a woman. The experience, so horrific, that she hoped that she would quickly die during the ordeal; a man who kidnapped his partner who was attempting to leave him. He shot her and, as she was dying, raped her; an escapee, who was determined not to return to goal, attempts to knife the author. Fortunately, for the reader, humorous incidents intersperse these crimes to give the reader some relief. The Cops - Not Just a Job gives an insight into a side of life most of us do not experience. It raises many issues - ethical, practical and psychological - which would be helpful for both serving and prospective police officers to discuss.

Brock and son were travelling by car at night through a unfamiliar area in late winter, early spring. The snow has melted and travel is relatively safe, but the nights are still subject to icy conditions. As Brock finds out having been distracted as he hits a spot of black ice. (An icing condition, whereby the road looks perfectly safe). Brock loses control of the vehicle and slams into a sand pile. His son, Tod is fast asleep in the back seat of the car and gets thrown about inside the car,(prior to seatbelts and airbag laws) causing him to bump his head. Brock on checking Tods condition after the accident, realizes that Tod is unconscious and notices the bump. Knowing a little about head injuries, he becomes increasingly concerned. He starts looking for help and unexpectedly meets Sean Logan, an old man who has a old cottage nearby. Sean saves both Brock and Tod, and puts them up for the night. In the morning, while Sean is preparing breakfast, Brock decides to go and check on the car. While surveying the damage, another stranger happens by to assist. Brock tells him of the previous evenings happenings and about Sean arriving to assist them both. The stranger, befuddled states that he lived in the area and knew nothing of Sean. At least not recently. There was a Sean mentioned in the community history, but had died when his cottage burned down more than a hundred years earlier.

Trevor Beeson traces the course of a fascinating period of history, starting from the time when church and state were bonded in an all-embracing unity, then moving through turbulent and and sometimes violent times in which the church struggled to discover a new vocation. Trevor Beeson analyses 18 key issues of the period in his usual robust style together with pen-portraits of the leading figures involved.. He ends with a critical evalualtion of the performances of some recent church leaders and outlines what he believes to be the appropriate basis for the intervention of bishops and other clergy in an increasingly secularised society that no longer recognises their authority. The duty to make pronouncements of Christian principle remains but these must normally point decision-makers in constructive directions rather than offering directives for the solutions of complex social and economic problems.
