Genesis contains a rich, nuanced text, and yet, when taught to children, it is often done through a series of "factoids," such as the number of animals brought into the ark or Esau's red lentil soup. Worst still, children are frequently discouraged from asking questions about its complex storylines. This book was written to redress both pedagogical shortcomings. It does so by reminding children that the Bible teaches us to be truly good people via amazing stories of brave men and women doing incredible things. However, the most valuable lessons we learn from the Bible seem to come from people's daily lives: how they speak to their spouses, how they treat their children, how they interact with their neighbors. Perhaps most importantly, the Bible teaches us to ask questions. At times, the answers to our questions come easily. At other times, the answers we seek are hidden away, and so we are left to think and wonder. Nonetheless, ask we must, because by asking questions, we can deepen our connection to the ones we address the questions to, be it parents, teachers, or even God himself.

War is hell is an understatement! Kenny knew something was wrong as his best friend tripped a wire. For a couple of seconds, they just stared at each other. It was as if his friend were saying goodbye. Even though it was only seconds, it lasted so long! Then came the explosion! His friend put his back against the mortar on the tree and took the entire load. Kenny flew backward about ten feet and thought he was dying as he was covered in so much blood and body parts. As it turned out, it was his friend who just saved his life. Kenny went into a state of shock and had to be flown out to a field hospital for observation. After a week, he was sent back into combat. A letter from Mom stated that my aunt was worried Kenny was losing his will to live. When I heard this, I knew that I had to get Kenny out of the fighting for a week to rest up and give him a reason to live again. To do this, I needed to make up fake orders as I had done before-but nothing to this extreme!

Shallow Creek Country Club is a course with several deliberately odd designs by its owner and architect, a man who made enough money in ball-bearings during World War II to indulge his fantasies about a golf course that includes one large sand green in honor of his father's memory, a pipe through a fairway hillside for those who want to play a little putt-putt golf, a green with a huge maple in the middle, and an underground cavern that was originally built as a bomb shelter but later turned into a cool stopping-off spot in the middle of a round. The cavern sits beneath one high hill overlooking most of the holes on the course and has a long tunnel leading back to the clubhouse. The story takes place in the late spring and summer of 1986 and is told from the point of view of a young English teacher and low-handicap golfer named Tom MacKenzie. He is romantically involved with his co-worker-counselor, Pat Thompson, as well as one of his graduating seniors, Amy Forrest, and he's not sure how he should handle the situation. Both Pat and Amy are good golfers, Pat about a twelve handicap and Amy a single-digit and getting better all the while. To further complicate things, Pat Thompson is also involved with Roger Burdis, a newly wealthy Floridian who has inherited money from an aunt and returned to Porter, Pennsylvania, to live. Roger Burdis is a borderline psychotic with an almost instant hatred for Tom, or Mac as all his friends call him. They encounter each other in several matches on the golf course, in a poker game in the club house, and in a variety of social situations, all leading up to one final confrontation on the golf course, but not for a golf match a middle-of-the-night match of wits with lives at stake. The plot includes several dashes of humor, a slice or two of sex, several layers of suspense, and enough golf to satisfy any club golfer in the country. And a conclusion as exciting as any Kentucky Derby photo finish.
