In the 1960s Donald Barthelme came to prominence as the leader of the Postmodern movement. He was a fixture at the New Yorker, publishing more than 100 short stories, including such masterpieces as "Me and Miss Mandible," the tale of a thirty-five-year-old sent to elementary school by clerical error, and "A Shower of Gold," in which a sculptor agrees to appear on the existentialist game show Who Am I? He had a dynamic relationship with his father that influenced much of his fiction. He worked as an editor, a designer, a curator, a news reporter, and a teacher. He was at the forefront of literary Greenwich Village which saw him develop lasting friendships with Thomas Pynchon, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Wolfe, Grace Paley, and Norman Mailer. Married four times, he had a volatile private life. He died of cancer in 1989. The recipient of many prestigious literary awards, he is best remembered for the classic novels Snow White, The Dead Father, and many short stories, all of which remain in print today. Hiding Man is the first biography of Donald Barthelme, and it is nothing short of a masterpiece.

Shortly after 1900, tens of thousands of tobacco growers throughout Kentucky and Tennessee convulsed the region for nearly a decade in a revolt against the monopolistic practices of the American Tobacco Company. Though the revolt known as the Tobacco Wars remains one of the more remarkable insurgencies of rural America, it is also one of the more misunderstood. In this first major account of the uprising in over half a century, Tracy Campbell tells the story of these embattled farmers and casts a provocative new light on the issues that fueled the Tobacco Wars. When tobacco prices fell below the cost of production in the early 1900s, farmers in western Kentucky and Tennessee, faced with desperate economic circumstances, formed cooperatives through which they could pool their crops and withhold tobacco from the market until a satisfactory price was offered. Campbell recounts the organizational underpinnings of the notorious "Black Patch War" and the forces that drove farmers to seek violent solutions to their economic ills. Campbell then expands the story to the burley region, where a simultaneous movement was under way. In 1908, over thirty thousand burley growers undertook the only successful large-scale agricultural strike in American history. Campbell brings this drama to life and describes the emotional day when the farmers achieved their unprecedented victory over the powerful Tobacco Trust. The Tobacco Wars represented one of the last desperate gasps from the countryside before the onset of "agribusiness" drove millions of farmers and their families away for good. The Politics of Despair thus stands as a unique reminder of a tradition of protest that has, perhaps, been irretrievably lost. This book will interest not only rural and labor historians and students of the American South but anyone concerned with the profound issues surrounding the decline of rural America.

I grabbed my OES sister's hand and began to pray in tongues. After waking up from an emergency surgery to stop the bleeding, I felt different. I knew how it felt to die. This feeling caused me to feel an urgency to do what God created me to do instead of doing my own thing. During my recovery, Abba God had me all alone with him to instruct me on how to get back on His path. His Word transformed my thoughts during my trials and temptations, causing my emotions and desires to change to God's will and allowing me to make clear choices that would bring me life, instead of death. The paths of life and death are written in the Bible, which guides me back to the center of the cross to gain instructions for the battles I will have to face. Each battle causes an aftermath transformation, which will cause a new testing of my faith in God, with temptation and trials. It was up to me whether I walk on the path of Abba or on the path of my own fleshly desires. Abba gave me an equation to guide me on my journey: TTEDCBA, which means my temptation and trials, will affect my emotion and desires. The choices I make will cause a battle between my faith and my flesh. The results of each battle will have an aftermath transformation. After receiving the equation, I heard a small voice ask me, "Who is dying waiting on you to tell your testimony so they can overcome the path of death?" So I began to write Abba's Baby Girl's Mind Transformation. I pray that my story will help you avoid the pit of death by walking according to the cross compass of TTEDCBA.

The Cold War era was a time of international paranoia that created tremendous stress for the whole world. Christians were not immune from this and had to live and work in the environment of fear in a world that had thousands of nuclear weapons. Surprise attacks by aggressors during WWII combined with nuclear weapons on the world stage set forth the possibility of a surprise attack with drastically worse consequences. In this book, Dr. Baker sets forth the experiences and stories of a Cold Warrior as he lived and worked through that difficult time in history. He has kept the stories as realistic as possible, though it is written for dramatic effect. All names are fictitious, however, in order to protect the privacy of the individuals involved. There are stories that will be humorous to the reader, but all the stories create an atmosphere of high drama. That was the atmosphere of the time because the demands on the military personnel were extreme with relatively small reward for their service. The stories and experiences verbally illustrated occurred in a variety of settings: Minuteman Missile Maintenance, Minuteman Missile Launch, a teaching assignment, Base Supply, including Fuels Management, and finally, Munitions Supply. No specific units or bases are named to preserve their security and honor. The reader will note that the people described in the book are not super men or women, but normal people put into extraordinary situations by the circumstances of the Cold War. Due to the large variety of personalities involved and the extreme demands of the complex systems, circumstances are sometimes created that few if any fiction writers could create. The result is that the reader will, at times, be spellbound but always kept interested by the dramas presented. If the reader gets to laugh at times, that's a plus!

Roma are a unique minority in Europe, and with current estimates of between seven and nine million living throughout the continent, they represent the largest minority group. They are the main poverty risk group in many countries of central and eastern Europe, yet there is little information available on their living conditions. This paper analyses data from a new cross-country household survey, conducted by the Center for Comparative Research at Yale University, into the ethnic dimension of poverty in Roma communities in Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania. Findings describe the multidimensional nature of Roma poverty, both in terms of consumption and income, as well as other deprivation measures such as housing and health status, access to education and employment opportunities. Significant structural factors are identified which reflect past and present discrimination. Whilst specific policies need to be formulated at the country level, the report also seeks to highlight common policy options among national governments, Roma communities, non-governmental organisations and international agencies.
