Snakes. Birds and Dreams: Gobekli Tepe and Caduceus By: Toru Nakamura PhD An international economist, Toru Nakamura, PhD has served in consulting and executive roles advising many private and public organizations around the world. Sharing a wide-ranging view is necessary to the future of our troubled world. However, too many social scientists have become increasingly specialized, paying little attention to what other disciplines are discovering and are losing a humanist perspective. In the process, they ignore the imagination and the importance of virtues like love or trust to bind us together. As the twenty-first century began, Dr. Nakamura began to visit some ruins of the world. He was awestruck at the prehistoric ruins called Göbekli Tepe, which was unearthed in the mid-1990s in southeastern Turkey. Later, Dr. Nakamura learned that the Greek symbol of the caduceus, a wand topped with wings and two entwined snakes, likely originated at this remarkable prehistoric site. There, as the last Ice Age was ending, the human imagination that led to the birth of civilization burst out.

Shimazaki in cosplay), worrying about what their relationship could be. Then Shuumei's best friend, Yuzuru, recognizes Shimazaki...and figures out that Hana is really Hanae?! Yuzuru is the only one who knows both of their secrets, but what's he supposed to say?
Popular music in Japan has been under the overwhelming influence of American, Latin American and European popular music remarkably since 1945, when Japan was defeated in World War II. Beginning with gunka and enka at the turn of the century, tracing the birth of hit songs in the record industry in the years preceding the War, and ranging to the adoption of Western genres after the War--the rise of Japanese folk and rock, domestic exoticism as a new trend and J-Pop--Popular Music in Japan is a comprehensive discussion of the evolution of popular music in Japan. In eight revised and updated essays written in English by renowned Japanese scholar Toru Mitsui, this book tells the story of popular music in Japan since the late 19th century when Japan began positively embracing the West.
When two guys who hate each other are also two girls forming a close friendship, wires are bound to get crossed! After the manager of Cafe Roman is injured in an accident, his crossdressing friend Shizuku is recruited to help keep the shop afloat. Hana takes the utmost care not to out Shizuku's real identity, but it might already be too late for that...?
The punk, Shuumei, and the otaku, Yuuma, fell for each other while crossdressed as cool beauty Mei and bubbly maid Hana, respectively. Things continue to spiral as Yuuma and his bestie Shimazaki try to help cure their normie friend Nakamura, who's afraid of girls... because they keep falling in love with him! Though the otaku aren't exactly sympathetic, Shimazaki offers to help him... by accidentally taking him to Roman, the cafe where Yuuma works as Hana! Will his bestie figure him out? What if Nakamura falls in love? Most importantly... where's Mei?!
This book provides various design techniques for switched-capacitor on-chip high-voltage generators, including charge pump circuits, regulators, level shifters, references, and oscillators. Readers will see these techniques applied to system design in order to address the challenge of how the on-chip high-voltage generator is designed for Flash memories, LCD drivers, and other semiconductor devices to optimize the entire circuit area and power efficiency with a low voltage supply, while minimizing the cost.
Yuuma's stuck between a rock and a hard place--not only does he have to take part in his class's crossplay cafe exhibition, he's also supposed to be there as Hana from Cafe Roman to help out! Meanwhile Shuumei, on seeing Yuuma crossdress, is hit with a deluge of baffling feelings... Will it be smooth sailing for these two or are turbulent waters ahead?!
This book presents a unique fusion of two different research topics. One is related to the traditional mathematical problem of chases and escapes. The problem mainly deals with a situation where a chaser pursues an evader to analyze their trajectories and capture time. It dates back more than 300 years and has developed in various directions such as differential games. The other topic is the recently developing field of collective behavior, which investigates origins and properties of emergent behavior in groups of self-driving units. Applications include schools of fish, flocks of birds, and traffic jams. This book first reviews representative topics, both old and new, from these two areas. Then it presents the combined research topic of "group chase and escape", recently proposed by the authors. Although the combination is simple and straightforward, the book describes the emergence of rather intricate behavior, provoking the interest of readers for further developments and applications of related topics.
When two very different boys know each other as two very different girls, it's no wonder things get confusing! Mei and Hana's friendship only grows, meanwhile the antagonism between otaku Yuuma and punk Shuumei has shown no signs of lessening. However, things are about to get jumbled. As friend Kanoko's persistence turns tiring, Mei approaches Yuuma for help in fending him off! The unexpected event brings Mei and Yuuma together, and secrets get harder to keep.
Mei and Hana are still completely clueless as to each other's true identities, but Yuuma and Shuumei's true colors are beginning to peek through! When a series of unexpected events result in Yuuma being invited over to Shuumei's house for the day, suddenly being in close proximity means both have to be careful not to let the cat out of the bag. There are pitfalls and traps galore to avoid if Yuuma wants to keep his secret!
This book interprets and explains contemporary population issues from historical and cultural perspectives. These include lowest-low fertility in the Republic of Korea and Taiwan, early population aging in China relative to the developmental level, and various modes of domestic and international migration in the region. The book shows that divergent fertility decline can be attributed to the family patterns established in the pre-modern era in each country. It also examines the diversity of international migration in Eastern Asian countries today is also understood from the long-term historical view.
When Hanayama gets his hands on some erroneous information, he mistakenly assumes that Yuuma is a close friend of Shuumei's and kidnaps him to exact his revenge! It's not like Yuuma means anything to Shuumei, so what will Shuumei do when he finds out?! When a case of mistaken identity goes this wrong, surely something else is bound to slip!
Otaku Yuuma and punk Shuumei still have no idea just how close they are to their crushes! Neither has any clue that the girl they like is actually their least favorite person in disguise. So while "Mei" and "Hana" are slowly bridging the gap between them and getting closer to the objects of their affections, other events churn in the background. Just when everything seems to be going well, Mei's spirit is put to the ultimate test!
This book provides a unique comparative view of the extremely low fertility and drastic population aging in Eastern Asian countries. After discussing demographic and political developments of Japan in detail as a reference case, accelerated changes in Korea, Taiwan and China are interpreted with a comparative cultural view. In addition to the well-known cultural divide between countries with strong and weak family ties, this book proposes another divide between offspring of the feudal family and that of the Confucian family. Included is a discussion of how the discrepancy between the compressed change in the socioeconomic system and the slow change in the family system has resulted in extremely low fertility in Eastern Asia. A comparison of policy development reveals that the sense of overpopulation has caused difficulty in launching pro-natal policy interventions in Eastern Asia, especially in China. Impacts of fertility decline on population aging, total dependency ratio and the timing of population decline in Eastern Asia are analyzed with a stylized model. The remaining Confucian family pattern is especially important in understanding and predicting political development to cope with accelerated population aging. This book is a valuable resource for researchers who are interested in the latest and most surprising demographic phenomena in the region.
This book focuses on the understanding of factors and mechanisms involved in the development of agency mainly in three related contexts --- participatory development, extension work, and service transactions. The research has its starting point in the recognition of the critical role played by “agency” (commonly understood as want/will for and practice of self-determination and self-management) on the part of intended beneficiaries of services and projects for effective implementation and sustainability. It is designed to address this subject matter with its principal focus on inner capacities and orientations of human beings, posing questions as to how such capacities and orientations could be enhanced and activated in practice by external actors in the field of public policies for socioeconomic and international development. The project is organized transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries --- combining anthropological, psychological, and economic approaches and perspectives.
A lot of economic problems can be formulated as constrained optimizations and equilibration of their solutions. Various mathematical theories have been supplying economists with indispensable machineries for these problems arising in economic theory. Conversely, mathematicians have been stimulated by various mathematical difficulties raised by economic theories. The series is designed to bring together those mathematicians who are seriously interested in getting new challenging stimuli from economic theories with those economists who seek effective mathematical tools for their researchers. The editorial board of this series comprises the following prominent economists and mathematicians: Managing Editors: S. Kusuoka (Univ. Tokyo), T. Maruyama (Keio Univ.); Editors: R. Anderson (U.C. Berkeley), C. Castaing (Univ. Montpellier), F. H. Clarke (Univ. Lyon I), G. Debreu (U.C. Berkeley), E. Dierker (Univ. Vienna), D. Duffie (Stanford Univ.), L.C. Evans (U.C. Berkeley), T. Ferromagnetism of metallic systems, especially those including transition metals, has been a controversial subject of modern science for a long time. This controversy sterns from the apparent dual character of the d-electrons responsible for magnetism in transition metals, i.e., they are itinerant elec trons described by band theory in their ground state, while at finite tem peratures they show various properties that have long been attributed to a system consisting of local magnetic moments. The most familiar example of these properties is the Curie-Weiss law of magnetic susceptibility obeyed by almost all ferromagnets above their Curie temperatures. At first the problem seemed to be centered around whether the d-elec trons themselves are localized or itinerant. This question was settled in the 1950s and early 1960s by various experimental investigations, in particular by observations of d-electron Fermi surfaces in ferromagnetic transition metals. These observations are generally consistent with the results of band calculations. Theoretical investigations since then have concentrated on explaining this dual character of d-electron systems, taking account of the effects of electron-electron correlations in the itinerant electron model. The problem in physical terms is to study the spin density fluctuati·ons, which are ne glected in the mean-field or one-electron theory, and their influence on the physical properties.
Hana(e) and (Shuu)Mei are continuing to develop their relationship slowly, and still neither realize that the other is also a crossdressing guy...! Things get even crazier when Shuumei's punk bro Kanoko manages to sniff out his crush. When Hana becomes Kanoko's stalking victim, Mei leaps in to protect her! But when Kanoko sees the strong-willed and powerful Mei, he falls in love at first sight?!
As the demand for data reliability increases, coding for error control becomes increasingly important in data transmission systems and has become an integral part of almost all data communication system designs. In recent years, various trellis-based soft-decoding algorithms for linear block codes have been devised. New ideas developed in the study of trellis structure of block codes can be used for improving decoding and analyzing the trellis complexity of convolutional codes. These recent developments provide practicing communication engineers with more choices when designing error control systems. Trellises and Trellis-based Decoding Algorithms for Linear Block Codes combines trellises and trellis-based decoding algorithms for linear codes together in a simple and unified form. The approach is to explain the material in an easily understood manner with minimal mathematical rigor. Trellises and Trellis-based Decoding Algorithms for Linear Block Codes is intended for practicing communication engineers who want to have a fast grasp and understanding of the subject. Only material considered essential and useful for practical applications is included. This book can also be used as a text for advanced courses on the subject.

Synopsis This book presents the following: (1) the facts and myths concerning Minoa; (2) the catastrophic earthquakes, tsunami, and volcanic eruption in the Aegean Sea; (3) Greece before and after its Dark Ages; and (4) their historical connection with Japan s ancient society. Some historical developments of civilization are deeply rooted in the awful apocalyptic events of nature which were metamorphosed or personalized later by mythologies. That being the case, there is an undeniable mythological similarity between Greece and Japan. WORDS OF PRAISE Nakamura's scholarly, magnificent sweep of the cultural and socioeconomic advances by Minoan society [on Crete] in ancient times opened my eyes to a historic period with lessons for today’s world. A must-read book that deepens our understanding of how extreme weather changes the way people live, and if their nations survive. --Clair Brown, Economics Professor at UC Berkeley, author of Buddhist Economics: An Enlightened Approach to the Dismal Science At this moment in the 21st century when humanity is increasingly reminded of the enormous powers of nature to surprise humans and wreak havoc on what humans have created on planet earth, philosopher Toru Nakamura has introduced this instructive short book about two extraordinary (what he terms) catastrophes of nature, and the enormous distortions they caused in the patterns and possibilities for human survival and progress in the ancient world: Thera Island’s volcanic eruption and tsunami 3600 years ago on Crete, the home of the advanced and dynamic Minoan society; and about 2000 years ago the 'Nankai Trough' massive earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Through meticulous cross-disciplinary research, the author has kitted together colorful comprehensive portrayals of societal development and human achievement in the centuries before the two catastrophes of nature, followed by the chaos and dark ages that followed both--destroying or diminishing greatly the structures, productivity, coherence, stability, and confidence of the peoples on both continents. By reading this narrative, we are convincingly forewarned that nature has always had the upper hand. --David Zenoff, author of The Soul of the Organization and former professor
