From a prominent educator, author, and founder of Harvard’s Change Leadership Group comes a provocative look at why innovation is today’s most essential real-world skill and what young people need from parents, teachers, and employers to become the innovators of America’s future. In this groundbreaking book, education expert Tony Wagner provides a powerful rationale for developing an innovation-driven economy. He explores what parents, teachers, and employers must do to develop the capacities of young people to become innovators. In profiling compelling young American innovators such as Kirk Phelps, product manager for Apple’s first iPhone, and Jodie Wu, who founded a company that builds bicycle-powered maize shellers in Tanzania, Wagner reveals how the adults in their lives nurtured their creativity and sparked their imaginations, while teaching them to learn from failures and persevere. Wagner identifies a pattern—a childhood of creative play leads to deep-seated interests, which in adolescence and adulthood blossom into a deeper purpose for career and life goals. Play, passion, and purpose: These are the forces that drive young innovators. Wagner shows how we can apply this knowledge as educators and what parents can do to compensate for poor schooling. He takes readers into the most forward-thinking schools, colleges, and workplaces in the country, where teachers and employers are developing cultures of innovation based on collaboration, interdisciplinary problem-solving, and intrinsic motivation. The result is a timely, provocative, and inspiring manifesto that will change how we look at our schools and workplaces, and provide us with a road map for creating the change makers of tomorrow. Creating Innovators will feature its own innovative elements: more than sixty original videos that expand on key ideas in the book through interviews with young innovators, teachers, writers, CEOs, and entrepreneurs, including Thomas Friedman, Dean Kamen, and Annmarie Neal. Produced by filmmaker Robert A. Compton, the videos are accessible via links and QR codes placed throughout the eBook text or by visiting www.creatinginnovators.com.
Author Tony Cloud grew up in Wheaton, Maryland, when the metropolitan area of Washington, DC, earned the title Crime Capital of the World. He knows firsthand the ugliness that crime perpetuates. In Transition of the Mind, he shows how drugs and violence have affected the hearts of the entire world and discusses how action must be taken before its too late. This study journeys into the hearts of deprived, devalued, and distressed inner-city children. Based on real lives and true events in the ghetto and suburban areas, it answers many questions that have been asked by parents and grandparents around the nation: Why are so many young people joining gangs, and how do we get them out? What kinds of laws or rules are necessary for inner-city survival? How has poverty cheapened the value of life? Besides abortion, how are children murdered without a weapon? What is the power of a gangsta in underprivileged areas? Is racism truly alive, and does it exists on every level of life? Heartfelt and raw, Transition of the Mind provides insight into the challenges of street life for many young people in inner-city settings. It shows that through discipline and faith in God and themselves, they can overcome the challenges and become righteous people.
Named by Christianity Today as one of the twenty-five most influential preachers of the last fifty years, best-selling author Tony Campolo has spent decades calling on readers and audiences around the world to live their faith through committed activism. A tireless crusader for human rights and the eradication of world poverty, Campolo is a "Red Letter" Christian -- he reminds us that when Jesus spoke, he spoke of social justice. But the Religious Right and social conservatives have hijacked His message in the name of Republican politics. They have corrupted the faith by ignoring the true message of Christ and focusing instead on narrow "wedge" issues to win political campaigns. In Letters to a Young Evangelical, Campolo calls on evangelicals of all ages to reject the false pieties of the Religious Right. With his trademark candor and wit, he offers sage advice to seekers who are trying to live their faith in a modern world that is politically polarized and predominantly secular. He is unafraid to touch on the hot-button topics that divide believers in America and around the world: abortion, gay rights, war, capital punishment, feminism, and the environment. An activist, a visionary, and a man of deep faith, Tony Campolo offers guidance not only for young evangelicals, but for seekers of all ages and faiths.
“Compelling, interesting and important” true stories of hard work, perseverance and success from some of the greatest football players in NFL history (Peter King, Sports Illustrated). To play in the National Football League, you have to have something special. A special drive, a special heart—and a special desire to win. And in this inspiring collection of true life stories from legendary players such as Roger Staubach, Jericho Cotchery, Rashied Davis and many more, you will learn how they overcame incredible obstacles to reach the NFL. One player’s father was murdered when he was eight, while another witnessed gun violence as early as the age of five. A Hall of Fame player never had a winter coat or winter boots and didn't always have food to eat, and yet another was put in classes for the mentally disabled, abused by his father, and ignored by his coaches because they said he had no talent. All of these players overcame these hardships to achieve a place in the NFL. Each story in Insightful Player demonstrates the immense power of the human spirit, and shows how players reached greatness not only with their talent, but with the heroism and strength of character they showed in their everyday lives. It is their perseverance that makes this a perfect playbook for inspiring anyone, especially children, to realize that they can be anything they want to be.
New Perspectives on Young Children's Moral Education explores how to approach young children's moral education in a world of uncertainty and change. What is moral education? How do young children learn to act and interact appropriately? How do we enable children to recognise that how they act and interact matters? How can character, virtues and value help young children internalise qualities associated with living 'a good life'? Challenging many current assumptions about ethics and education, Tony Eaude suggests that a moral dimension runs through every aspect of life and that ethics involves learning to act and interact appropriately, based on an 'ethic of care' and enduring qualities and attributes, to equip children to resist strong external pressures. Drawing accessibly on research in neuroscience and psychology, he discusses how young children learn, highlighting the role of emotion, culture, example, habituation and feedback. Small actions can help to develop agency, empathy and thoughtfulness and a sense of moral identity, with an increasing emphasis on self-regulation, a vocabulary of ethics and intrinsic motivation. Eaude explores how character, virtues and values can help young children and adults to recognize and internalize qualities associated with living 'a good life'. He identifies how adults and learning environments can support these processes and shows why an inclusive approach is needed, rather than focusing on these topics only in particular settings, programmes or lessons. Recognising pitfalls and dilemmas, Eaude argues that an approach based on virtue ethics and an apprenticeship model is suitable in school and other settings, both religious and otherwise, internationally.

There have been many books written on the End Times and the book of Revelation. After reading myriads of such books, I found their main focus was to interpret the book based on current events of the day. Previous authors have made predictions that may or may not come true. Therefore, the substance, the true interpretation of Revelation, and the validity of what the writer is trying to convey is lost. In contrast, my purpose for writing this book is to give you a veritable understanding of what the writer, John, is actually trying to convey under the Divine Inspiration of the Holy Spirit. I am using what I believe is the correct method of Biblical interpretation in this book. My goal is to present you with a clear understanding of the book of Revelation. I am certain this commentary will provide you with an uncomplicated approach and a simpler view of the End Time events. Don't get complacent as you journey to the high praise in the throne room. Continue to travel through the divisions of prophecy and experience the intensity of John's visions. I pray you'll be 'caught up' in the divine revelation of God's irrefutable Word and increase your anticipation of what we as Christians look forward to. I'll see you at the Rapture!

Somewhere between here and anywhere, in a trailer park called "The People's Court," lives a bespectacled, floppy-footed girl named Agnes. Her age falls exactly between the wide-eyed times when fairy tales are embraced as truth and the darker, later years when cynicism starts to take its toll. The other players in this small sideshow are Grandma, a hardworking, underpaid Golden Ager who worries that she may be a little too old for the challenge of raising a granddaughter, and Trout, Agnes's best friend. Trout was named after one of her father's biggest passions and, according to her, she was only three numbers from being christened Powerball. Trout tries to temper Agnes's stigmatism of hope with her own doctrine of realism. Together they weather the major tribulations that only childhood can make so monumental. Trout aspires to pilot a soft-serve ice cream machine so all the kids will laugh and yell "Hey, Ice Cream Lady!" Agnes merely wants to be crowned lord queen of the unknown universe. They will probably end up on different bowling leagues.
An inside peek at the life of a MuchMusic VJ . . . When you think of urban pop culture icons at "the nation’s music station" over the past decade, only one name comes to mind: Master T. "T" has been an employee at Much since their doors opened in 1984 (in 1990 he hit the air full-time as a VJ) and in that time he's helped fuel the growth of urban music in Canada and become world renowned for his relaxed, well-researched style of interviewing. So much so that musical artists such as Shaggy, Eminem, and the Spice Girls have specifically requested that Master T be their host for high-profile much interview segments. This part-Much-retrospective, part-autobiography will provide a behind-the-scenes peek at the bejeweled, dreadlocked wonder as he rubs shoulders with A-list celebrities from Barry White and the Backstreet Boys to Mary J. Blige and Madonna during his intimate interview sessions. Much Master T fuses together stories of his life migrating from England to Kitchener, Ontario, becoming a pitchman for the hugely successful Dance Mix CDs, his views on diversity on Canadian TV, and how he helped usher in Much's unconventional style of political reportage. Included are never-before-told stories of having his head pulled into Scary Spice's cleavage, interviewing Tupac just days before his murder, and coercing a very pregnant Lauryn Hill-on-sabbatical to perform an exclusive gig at his MuchMusic goodbye blocko party.
