The officer had gotten out of his car with his weapon drawn. He was tapping on the driver's side window with the barrel. I opened the door to get out, as I was getting out, I was asking what the problem was. I didn't get the whole sentence out before . POW, right in my nose. My knees buckled, I was going down. While I was on the ground I heard him asking, "where's the dope nigger, I know you rich boys come back to the hood to supply your buddies with the goods. Where is it?" I looked up and said, "I don't sell or have any . BAM, he kicked me right smack in my stomach. I could smell the bile come out of my mouth as I threw up everywhere. I looked at the other officer, and he was standing there frozen, as if he was gonna get his ass whipped. I decided I was going to stand up. There was gonna be no Rodney King incidents. I stood up and faced him, he struck me again, this time I held my ground, I was not going down. I could see all the neighbors gathering on the sidewalks, I got even stronger. When the officer noticed the crowd, he left to get in his cruiser. His partner was still standing there frozen; he had to blow the horn for him to get in. When they left, I jumped in my car and sped away.

In Afro-Blue, Tony Bolden traces the ways innovations in black music and poetry have driven the evolution of a variety of other American vernacular artistic forms. The blues tradition, Bolden demonstrates, plays a key role in the relationship between poetry and vernacular expressive forms. Through an analysis of the formal qualities of black poetry and music, Afro-Blue shows that they function as a form of resistance, affirming the values and style of life that oppose bourgeois morality. Even before the term blues had cultural currency, the inscriptions of style and resistance embodied in the blues tradition were already a prominent feature of black poetics. Bolden delineates this interrelation, examining how poets extend and reshape a variety of other verbal folk forms in the same way as blues musicians play with other musical genres. He identifies three distinct bodies of blues poetics: some poets mimic and riff on oral forms, another group fuse their dedication to vernacular culture with a concern for literary conventions, while still others opt to embody the blues poetics by becoming blues musicians - and some combine elements of all three.

Our two lovers hearts are then broken cast asunder, destined never to be reunited, until a dramatic turn of events over ten years later lead to a gripping climax.
