Chinese, as an aspect language, has played an important role in the development of aspect theory. This book is a systematic and structured exploration of the linguistic devices that Mandarin Chinese employs to express aspectual meanings. The work presented here is the first corpus-based account of aspect in Chinese, encompassing both situation aspect and viewpoint aspect. In using corpus data, the book seeks to achieve a marriage between theory-driven and corpus-based approaches to linguistics. The corpus-based model presented explores aspect at both the semantic and grammatical levels. At the semantic level a two-level model of situation aspect is proposed, which covers both the lexical and sentential levels, thus giving a better account of the compositional nature of situation aspect. At the grammatical level four perfective and four imperfective aspects in Chinese are explored in detail. This exploration corrects many intuition-based misconceptions, and associated misleading conclusions, about aspect in Chinese common in the literature.

In the early twentieth century, Chinese traditional architecture and the French-derived methods of the École des Beaux-Arts converged in the United States when Chinese students were given scholarships to train as architects at American universities whose design curricula were dominated by Beaux-Arts methods. Upon their return home in the 1920s and 1930s, these graduates began to practice architecture and create China’s first architectural schools, often transferring a version of what they had learned in the U.S. to Chinese situations. The resulting complex series of design-related transplantations had major implications for China between 1911 and 1949, as it simultaneously underwent cataclysmic social, economic, and political changes. After 1949 and the founding of the People’s Republic, China experienced a radically different wave of influence from the Beaux-Arts through advisors from the Soviet Union who, first under Stalin and later Khrushchev, brought Beaux-Arts ideals in the guise of socialist progress. In the early twenty-first century, China is still feeling the effects of these events. Chinese Architecture and the Beaux-Arts examines the coalescing of the two major architectural systems, placing significant shifts in architectural theory and practice in China within relevant, contemporary, cultural, and educational contexts. Fifteen major scholars from around the world analyze and synthesize these crucial events to shed light on the dramatic architectural and urban changes occurring in China today—many of which have global ramifications. This stimulating and generously illustrated work is divided into three sections, framed by an introduction and a postscript. The first focuses on the convergence of Chinese architecture and the École des Beaux-Arts, outlining the salient aspects of each and suggesting how and why the two "met" in the U.S. The second section centers on the question of how Chinese architects were influenced by the Beaux-Arts and how Chinese architecture was changed as a result. The third takes an even closer look at the Beaux-Arts influence, addressing how innovative practices, new schools of architecture, and buildings whose designs were linked to Beaux-Arts assumptions led to distinctive new paradigms that were rooted in a changing China. Boone is the youngest and brashest of the humans. He's a racist, a drug addict, given to violence and can't shoot to save his life. Boone evidences supernatural attributes, such as the ability to heal rapidly from seemingly devastating injuries. He's also occasionally shadowed by a spector he refers to as Stan that only he can see. Boone feels an attraction to Emanuela, a witch-like character who hunts vampires and other creatures like them with "the Sisterhood." The novel culminates in Boone's confrontation against Rainford's army in an decrepit warehouse.

The well-connected, northern-French monk and musician Gautier de Coinci (1177/8-1236) occupies an unassailable position as one of the most exceptional vernacular writers of the Middle Ages, concerning whom there is nevertheless nofull length study in English. In a meticulously planned and supervised collection of miracles of Our Lady, which survive in a remarkable number of manuscripts, some beautifully illustrated, Gautier deploys his outstanding talentsas a composer of songs, an acerbic satirist, an audacious inventor of rich and equivocal rhymes (of a virtuosity unparalleled before the "Grands Rhetoriqueurs" on the eve of the Renaissance), a confident lexical innovator, an exuberant exponent of rhetorical wordplay, an incisive observer of contemporary society, and a man of profound personal piety. This study of word-patterning in Gautier seeks to compensate for the dearth of stylistic studies ofOld French and to examine in detail the relationship between rhetoric and religion, "courtoisie" and Mariolatry, aristocratic tastes and the way to spiritual renewal. Gautier's writing strategy is shown to be a means to rise beyond secular, aristocratic values by building on them and transcending them rather than opposing and rejecting them. In 2011, Böscke et al. reported the unexpected discovery of ferroelectric properties in hafnia based thin films, which has since initiated many further studies and revitalized research on the topic of ferroelectric memories. In spite of many efforts, the unveiling of the fundamentals behind this surprising discovery has proven rather challenging. In this work, the originally claimed Pca21 phase is experimentally proven to be the root of the ferroelectric properties and the nature of this ferroelectricity is classified in the frame of existing concepts of ferroelectric materials. Parameters to stabilize this polar phase are examined from a theoretical and fabrication point of view. With these very basic questions addressed, the application relevant electric field cycling behavior is studied. The results of first-order reversal curves, impedance spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy significantly advance the understanding of structural mechanisms underlying wake-up, fatigue and the novel phenomenon of split-up/merging of transient current peaks. The impact of field cycling behavior on applications like ferroelectric memories is highlighted and routes to optimize it are derived. These findings help to pave the road for a successful commercialization of hafnia based ferroelectrics.

I've had feedback from students that they just want me to read them drug names and mnemonics so they can put in their earbuds before they go to bed before their board exams. I've got three five year olds, I don't have time to do the heavy lifting you all do as narrators. In Memorizing Pharmacology: A Relaxed Approach, which will sell over 6,500 audiobook copies in its first year, I only had the narrator complete 200 drug names in a seven hour book. There is a list of 350 later in the book, but I thought, who in the world would want to listen to 350 drug names in a row? So I omitted it. There was an answer to that rhetorical question, health professional students studying for a board exam that are exhausted from family, work, and school want to listen to it. This print, book, however, provides a journal for you to continue to add knowledge you pick up as you complete your pharmacology class, clinicals, or even an interesting commercial or YouTube video.
