Six years ago my mother requested that I should write a story about how things were when we all were young. The experiences we had and endured along the way while making memories that would last a lifetime. The things that we often sat around talking about on so many occasions and would laugh so hard we would be in tears. My mother felt that other people would enjoy some of our fondest memories from my childhood as she did her best to raise her children as a single parent most of the time. My family felt it was a blessing to be able to look back and laugh about it all, what my mother referred to as the "good old days". There are some stories you would not believe, but they a true some are funny and some are sad. My mother passed away on Thanksgiving day of 2006 so I am really trying to keep a promise that I made to her and keep our fondest and most cherished memories from my childhood and share it with the world. That is what my mother wanted me to do, I really hope you enjoy "Before We Get Old" (the good old days).

Intellectual Freedom and Social Responsibility in American Librarianship, 1967-1974

Between 1967 and 1974, a number of librarians came together to push for change in the American Library Association. They soon prompted a majority of the profession to examine their role in the dissemination and preservation of culture and to ask basic questions about the terrain that the profession defends. A particular concern was the limitations to intellectual freedom (if any) that might arise in the pursuit of other perhaps equally worthy goals. The questions raised by this advocacy group were based on a relatively new concept of librarianly social responsibility that was partly an outgrowth of the civil rights and antiwar agitation of the period and partly a continuation of the proud traditions of the alternative press movement in the United States. The resulting dissension and turmoil exposed an inherent discrepancy not only between the rhetoric of ideals within the profession and the reality of practice but between librarians as agents of change--librarians' having a social agenda--and professional "neutrality" or the provision of information for all sides without taking sides. These conflicts have never been resolved. The reader will find in this book a fully researched presentation of the years of ferment and political infighting that brought the issues into such sharp focus.

Those were indeed fascinating days when the raw power of God came down undiluted. The arrest of Peter by a daring Herod did stir up holy indignation in someone like Mary. She rose with boldness to open her house for the brethren to gather and call heaven down in fervent prayer. What happened in the prison that night could convince any doubter that heaven does open at the request of God’s saints on earth.
