The War between the States has taken a turn. The Confederacy, after victory upon victory against the might of the Union, is beginning to fall. President Lincolns aggressive generals and massive manpower are now turning back the proud men in gray. General Shermans ruthless march to the sea devastates the Southern countryside, pillaging the lands as well as crushing morale. There has to be a successful plan to turn the tide. New York City, the empire city, is also torn. Large numbers of copperheads, Southern sympathizers, are growing impatient with the war dragging on and mostly the fear of freed blacks coming up to the city to take their jobs. A Union officer, disenchanted with the handling of the war and its fighting men, resigns his commission as a cavalryman to take a job as a detective with the Metropolitan Police force in the island of Manhattan. Hired to catch the killer of a police captain, he stumbles into attempts to destroy the great city, unaware that a larger more hideous plan lurks. The circle of his investigation revolves around a young spiritualist. Gaining notoriety with New Yorks upper class, she preys on the misfortunes of others by communicating with the dead. Is she involved in the murder? She is also in with a group of ruthless people determined to take the city with the help of Confederate spies who will stop at nothing to succeed. What terrible plan awaits this great city? Can it be stopped?

While traditionally framed as a national and international problem, climate change is also an important local issue. For the past fifteen years, while nations have fought over the terms of emissions reductions and the Kyoto Protocol, local governments and communities have been enacting innovative measures that not only prevent emissions of significant quantities of greenhouse gases but also reduce air pollution, save money, and improve the overall quality of life. In the absence of a serious national policy that addresses global warming, these grassroots efforts can and have made a difference. Since 1993, when fourteen pioneering local governments first began to develop programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a national and international movement has formed to fight global climate change through concerted local action. These communities are having a significant effect. A handful of jurisdictions in the United States are preventing over twenty million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere annually and have saved over four hundred million dollars in the process. These initiatives include greening the local building codes, creating commercial waste reduction programs, encouraging water conservation, promoting bicycling and fuel-efficient vehicles, upgrading city buildings, advocating for the use of biodiesel for municipal transportation, and designing innovative systems and policies for reduced paper use. Two in-depth case studies-- Fort Collins, Colorado, and Portland, Oregon--demonstrate how two cities have created and implemented climate-friendly and environmentally sound habitats. While most books on global warming focus on national and international implications and policy approaches or serve as guides to help individuals live in an ecologically sound manner, Linstroth and Bell provide a blueprint for local governments to follow. Combining an analysis of existing federal policy with examples of successful local policy, they provide practical examples of measures that can be implemented by communities and local governments across the United States.
In recent times, the ASEP (American Society of Exercise Physiologists) leaders have developed and implemented academic standards to promote professionalism in academic programs throughout the U.S. The effort represents a significant change in the scope and the monitoring of the exercise physiologists' accountability. Through these new standards, all academic exercise physiologists are challenged by ASEP to accept responsibility for promoting the professionalization and self-regulation that will lead to lead to improved client and patient care when prescribing exercise medicine. Accreditation helps to reduce unnecessary variation within and between academic programs. Moreover, given the collaborative improvement in academic programs and faculty responsibility to the undergraduate students, the quality of their educational care will be significantly improved. Academic exercise physiologists must take responsibility for where exercise physiology is today and take responsibility to the evolving state of exercise physiology and student market-driven career opportunities in exercise medicine. Advancing the Profession of Exercise Physiology provides understanding and guidance on the importance and the significance of academic leadership in promoting the profession of exercise physiology as a healthcare profession that is founded on professionalism, accreditation, ethical practice, and entrepreneurial skills. This new volume examines the ethical need for professionalism in exercise physiology, which is, in turn, imperative for future growth and sustainability.

The purpose of this book is to fight against the lies of Satan with indisputable facts of absolute truth found only in the Word of the Lord, otherwise known as the Bible. These indisputable facts, addressed in this book, answer the following questions: Is God capable of causing His Holy Scriptures to reach us today, accurately translated from the original languages in which they were written? Is God capable of speaking into existence, out of nothing, the trillions of galaxies that make up the heavens and the universe? Is God capable of causing His absolute truth to be applicable to all of us today, thousands of years after His absolute truth was actually written? Is God capable of truly blessing the nation whose God is the Lord? Is God capable of expressing to us that which is true forgiveness? Is God capable of fulfilling His promise of eternal life? Satan’s answer to all of these questions is a resounding “No, God is not capable.” The research in this book details people and organizations who have offered indisputable facts that God is capable of accomplishing all of the above. It is my fervent desire to get this book into the hands of as many people as possible so that it can be used as a tool to fight the lies of Satan and, more importantly, promote the absolute truths found in the Word of the Lord, otherwise known as the Bible. It is my fervent prayer that the information and suggested actions in this book are used as tools to promote the absolute truths that God really does “bless the nation whose God is the Lord” and that the Word of the Lord, otherwise known as the Bible, is just as applicable in our lives today as it was when it was written all of those thousands of years ago. 2
