After shunning Timothy since his arrival in Arcanum, Parliament has finally turned to him for help. Raptus, the vicious leader of the Wurm, is determined to break through the magical barrier that separates his world from Sunderland and exact vengeance upon the mages. Parliament needs Timothy's kind of magic-the magic of invention-to prepare for the inevitable battle with the Wurm. Timothy sets out with Leander and an exploratory team to the site of the barrier, but over the course of the trip Leander's behavior goes from erratic to dangerous-so much so that Cassandra is named Grandmaster of the Order of Alhazred. Can Timothy and Cassandra find the source of Leander's transformation before it destroys them all?
Timothy and Cassandra have defeated the sorcerer Alhazred but in so doing have weakened the dimensional barrier which had prevented the Wurm from attacking their world.
From the Solway Firth in the south to Shetland in the north, from remote St Kilda to the west to St Abbs in the east, Tom Weir explores Scotland as a walker and climber, and along the way introduces his readers to the range of wildlife and people living in the countryside, and historical aspects of various places. To his vivid descriptive writing he adds memories of some absent friends, and also retraces the path of Bonnie Prince Charlie on the run after Culloden. Tom Weir became a household name in Scotland as a result of the television series in which he explored his native country, but the book 'Weir's Way' is, to quote the author, 'not about every "e;Weir's Way"e; programme ... it is a broader vision of Scotland using the medium of written words'.

From his early years Tom Weir MBE was set on making his way as an explorer, writer and photographer, a progress interrupted by World War Two but then leading to expeditions ranging from the Himalayas to Greenland. For over forty years his feature 'My Month' appeared in the Scots Magazine, reflecting his fascination with Scotland, its remote corners, people and wildlife - interests that made his award-winning TV programme Weir's Way so popular. From sources published and unpublished this collection of Tom Weir's writing has been selected by Hamish Brown from the whole body of his life's work. One of Hamish Brown's teenage inspirations was Tom Weir's Highland Days and, later, he was lucky to know and sometimes work with Tom. As a much-travelled author, lecturer and photographer himself, Hamish was delighted to put together this selection of Tom's work.

At the conclusion of World War II, war crimes tribunals were carried out at Nuremberg, Germany. Justice was meted out for major war criminals, and Benjamin Ferencz was chief prosecutor for what the Associated Press said was the largest murder trial in history. This biography of the last living Nuremberg prosecutor traces his life from early childhood growing up as an immigrant in Hell's Kitchen in New York City, to Harvard Law School, to the U.S. Army and Patton's Judge Advocate War Crimes Investigation Section, to the Nuremberg Tribunals and beyond. His life has been spent working toward the goal of world peace through law, not war, including the successful formation of the International Criminal Court, in which Ferencz played a key role.

People imagine that the authors imagination is invariably at work, as he is perpetually inventing an illimitable supply of occurrences and episodes as he dreams up narratives, pulling conceptions from thin air. Genuinely, the antithesis is true once the public kens that the obnubilate force of art within brings characters and their lives to the author. And with that, I will leave you to read this dark comedy of action, deception, malefaction, murder, and romance as it all came to me through my imagination from local people, through their thoughts and input, to develop a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience as you venture further into the crisp white pages of ones novel.
A great storyteller . . . you would be hard pushed to find a more knowledgeable or entertaining [guide]' Icon 'Such an interesting book . . . I cannot recommend it enough.' Lauren Laverne In Dubai, a luxury apartment block is built in the shape of a giant iPod. In China, President Xi Jinping denounces the trend of constructing ‘bizarre’ new buildings in wacky shapes and colours. In Cincinnati, celebrity architect Zaha Hadid is paid millions to design a single ‘iconic’ structure – with the hope of single-handedly transforming the region’s ailing fortunes. These incidents are all part of the same story: the rise of the age of spectacle. Over the last fifty years, there has been a revolution in how our cities operate. In The Age of Spectacle, Tom Dyckhoff tells the story of how architecture became obsessed with the flashy, the monumental and the ostentatious – and how we all have to live with the consequences. Exploring cityscapes from New York to Beijing, and from Bilbao to Portsmouth, Dyckhoff shows that we are not just witnessing a new kind of building: we are living through a fundamental transformation in how our urban spaces work. The corporate explosion of the last few decades has fundamentally shifted the relationship between architects, politicians and cities’ inhabitants, fostering innovative new kinds of engineering and design, but also facilitating ill-conceived vanity projects and commercial power-grabs. Timely, passionate and bursting with new ideas, The Age of Spectacle is both an examination of how twenty-first century cities work, and a manifesto for a radically new kind of urbanism. Our cities, Dyckhoff shows, can thrive in the age of spectacle – but only if they engage us not just with dazzling structures, but by responding to the needs of the people who inhabit them. 'Engaging . . . The “iconic” building is the most obvious architectural phenomenon of our age yet, somehow, no one has quite done what Tom Dyckhoff does with The Age of Spectacle, which is to tell its story clearly and plainly.' Rowan Moore, Observer 'First class. Finally, a book that nails the iconic movement – Tom Dyckhoff’s The Age of Spectacle is the book that I wish I had written.' Simon Jenkins 'Unusually accessible [and] well argued.' Evening Standard
This book offers the first large-scale investigation into the attitude of the historical Jesus towards covenant belief, the dominant theme of the Judaism of Jesus' day. The book, intended as part one of a two-volume investigation, takes its point of departure in a simple question which nevertheless integrally reflects the covenant thinking of the time: Was Jesus engaged in trying to find out how to remain faithful to the covenant? Current scholarship underlines both the importance of the covenant belief for early Judaism and the need for considering Jesus as being within Judaism. Studying how Jesus viewed the covenant leads right to the heart of the matter, both illuminating his relation to Judaism and providing a significant, still unexamined vantage point for his proclamation.

All the architects in this book deserve international recognition. The reality is, though, that few are household names. Over the last decade, awareness of the need for gender balance in architecture has gained traction. Within the profession, women remain underrepresented, underpromoted and underpaid. Failure to acknowledge women’s contribution to the built environment has perpetuated this cycle and impoverished us all. By showcasing 100 exceptional architects – who happen to be women – this book provides a flagship reference to inspire and support everyone working in the profession, no matter how they identify. Global in outlook, the book presents an equitable sample of architects from every continent. We all need heroines as much as heroes. Through illustrated interviews, each woman shares how they are responding to a profound disconnect between architecture and the people and landscape it serves. Their visions, methods and models of leadership are essential to connecting the needs of humans and the planet. In the words of Indigenous Canadian architect Eladia Smoke: ‘Now is a critical time to seek out every opportunity to transmit this knowledge to future generations.’ Featuring: 100 interviews with leading women architects, including: Tatiana Bilbao, Odile Decq, Liz Diller, Julia Gamolina, Dorte Mandrup and Farshid Moussavi. Over 400 photographs and drawings. Geographically balanced selection, with profiles across every continent.
The multicultural Midlands is a unique, interdisciplinary study of the literature, music and food that shape the region’s irrepressible, though often overlooked, cultural identity. It is the first of its kind to give serious critical attention to a part of the world which is frequently ignored by readers, critics and the culture industries. This book makes a claim for the importance of the Midlands and evidences this with nuanced close reading of a multitude of diverse texts spanning so-called ‘high’ to ‘low’ culture; from the Black Country’s ‘Desi Pubs’, to Leicester’s ‘McIndians’ Peri Peri (‘you’ve tried the cowboys, now try the Indians!’); Handsworth’s reggae roots to Adrian Mole’s diaries.
This is the first book to focus on a small but essential piece of every baseball game played during the last 100-plus years--the lineup card, used to record the full lineup and batting order for both teams. Drawing on input from dozens of memorabilia experts, collectors, team and league executives, umpires, coaches and managers, the author tells the story of the lineup card's role in America's pastime, from its history and usage to cards from famous games and the people who collect them. Nearly 200 illustrations include cards for Sandy Koufax's 1965 perfect game, Cal Ripken's record-breaking 2,131st consecutive game and the final game of Boston's first World Series title in 86 years.
For more than twenty years, Bishop Tom Butler has related religious belief to the events of public life, both national and global, in regular contributions to BBC Radio 4's Thought for the Day. Each 'Thought' is prompted by current events, without knowing how the news will develop, thereby illustrating how religion relates to contemporary life and how the insights it offers may develop over time. Here, Tom Butler explores themes ranging from The Gulf Wars and Terrorism via Science, Medical Ethics and Political Life to Religion itself. Drawing on (and incorporating) a selection of Thought for the Day scripts covering a twenty-year period, he charts the developing relationship between religion and public life and explores the Church's role of bringing religious values and insights to bear on topical issues and restating the public's hopes and fears in religious language.
In 2020s Foresight, authors Tom Sine and Dwight Friesen seek to "wake up" Christian leaders and those whom they serve to the realities that leaders in other fields must deal with all the time. We are no longer simply living in changing times. We live in the reality that we are racing into a new world of accelerating change. The authors want to enable leaders in churches and Christian organizations to learn how to lead in this time of acceleration. They focus on three vital practices: foresight (analyzing the accelerating changes and anticipating new opportunities and strategies for addressing change); reflection (discerning biblical purposes for times like these); and creating innovative ways to engage new challenges so as to advance God's purposes in our lives, congregations, and organizations in the 2020s. The book is intended to equip Christian leaders to anticipate some of the new challenges in the 2020s; discover God's shalom purposes for our lives, the church, and God's world; and create innovative new possibilities for our lives, communities, and congregations that both engage new opportunities and advance God's purposes.
Playwrights throughout history have used the emotion of wonder to explore the relation between feeling and knowing in the theatre. In Shakespeare and the Theatre of Wonder, T. G. Bishop argues that wonder provides a turbulent space, rich at once in emotion and self-consciousness, where the nature and value of knowing is brought into question. Bishop compares the treatment of wonder in classical philosophy and drama, and goes on to examine English cycle-plays, charting wonder's ambivalent relation to dogma and sacrament in the medieval religious theatre. Through extended readings of three of Shakespeare's plays - The Comedy of Errors, Pericles and The Winter's Tale - Bishop argues that Shakespeare uses wonder as a key component of his dialectic between affirmation and critique. Wonder is shown as vital to the characteristic self-consciousness of Shakespeare's plays as acts of narrative enquiry and renovation.
This is the strange and wondrous story of an eight-year voyage and a mission to save souls. Their mission started in the South Seas, where they reported scenes of chiefs surfing, perpetual warfare and a sudden surge of Christianity. From there they went via New Zealand, Australia and its aboriginal hinterland, through 'the Orient' to India and slave-ridden Mauritius. Based on contemporary journals, mission reports, letters and illustrations, and bursting with character and anecdote. ON THE MISSIONARY TRAIL is both the enthralling narrative of the longest missionary voyage ever undertaken and a colourful, detailed, eye-opening snapshot of little-known worlds, set against the wider picture of evangelism and guilt, heroism and humanity.
This is the first book I have ever written. This is a fiction based on a true story of a manipulative wicked stepfather who captures the heart of a beautiful, innocent married woman with three children-one boy and two girls-from a different class background. The stepfather is hell-bent on jealousy of the younger siblings, especially the boy. The stepfather disregards his own family, leaving behind his wife and his only son, with no regard to contacting them in the future. An expression from the author who has lived this life does not want this to happen to anybody else, giving you an insight to the manipulation of a wicked stepfather, who manipulates a young boy to remove him from the family with the use of cunning, evil manipulation in such a way that alters the personality and social standing of the young boy, eventually removing him from the family unit and destroying his morals at same time, with a disregard to the young boy's feelings, and at the same time, destroying his social life and future.

The classic text, with a new introduction by Anthony Barnett In this classic text, first published in 1977, Tom Nairn memorably depicts the “slow foundering” of the United Kingdom on the rocks of constitutional anachronism, its fall from empire and the gathering force of civic nationalism. Rich in comparisons between the nationalisms of the British Isles and those of the wider world, The Break-Up of Britain concludes by reflecting on the Janus-faced nature of national identity. Postscripts from the Thatcher and New Labour years trace the political strategies whose upshot accelerated the demise of a British order they were intended to serve. As a second Scottish independence referendum beckons, a new introduction by openDemocracy’s Anthony Barnett underlines the book’s enduring relevance.

One of the most powerful poets of his generation consolidates his reputation as an exceptionally forthright and astringent critic in this book that analyzes the relationship between English-language literature, especially poetry, and nineteenth and twentieth-century politics. Tom Paulin's criticism stays on track, always responsive to a work's characteristic genius and sensitive to its social setting. Each of these essays--on poets ranging from Robert Southey and Christina Rossetti to Philip Larkin, from John Clare to Elizabeth Bishop and Ted Hughes, with a few excursions into the poetry of Eastern Europe for contrast--is informed by a love for poetry and a lively attention to detail. At every turn, Paulin demonstrates the intricate connection between the private imagination and society at large, simultaneously illuminating the kinship between the literature of the past and of the present. He also relates the poetry to themes of nationhood and to ideas about orality, speech rhythms, and vernacular background. Minotaur exemplifies the sort of general, accessible criticism of the arts that will interest a wide range of readers.
