Analyzing the construction of new social and political relations in the wake of the United States’ 1930s Good Neighbor Policy, Acoustic Properties challenges standard narratives of hemispheric influence through new readings of Richard Wright’s cinematic work in Argentina, Severo Sarduy’s radio plays in France, and novels by John Dos Passos, Manuel Puig, Raymond Chandler, and Carson McCullers. Alongside these writers, the book also explores Che Guevara and Fidel Castro’s Radio Rebelde, FDR’s fireside chats, Félix Caignet’s invention of the radionovela in Cuba, Evita Perón’s populist melodramas in Argentina, Orson Welles’s experimental New Deal radio, Cuban and U.S. “radio wars,” and the 1960s African American activist Robert F. Williams’s proto–black power Radio Free Dixie. From the doldrums of the Great Depression to the tumult of the Cuban Revolution, Acoustic Properties illuminates how novelists in the radio age converted writing into a practice of listening, transforming realism as they struggled to channel and shape popular power.

Introducing the female dedicatees and performers of sonatas written for both Vienna and London, he links rhetoric and gender showing how femininity was encoded into the music through rhetorical gestures comparable to those Haydn employed in letters to female friends and patrons. Using wit and imagination to illuminate and bridge the gulf between 18th-century and 21st-century concepts of performance, this book helps define a fresh approach to keyboard studies and performance studies today.

Little did I expect this would turn into a year and half long pilgrimage where I would learn much about the self-taught artist Horace Pippin. It was one of his paintings, telling a specific story that I carried with me to friends, to new acquaintances, to libraries, to museums, to auction houses, to the USPS, and to many more places using it as a torch to guide my way. In the end it proved to be one of the most exciting journeys I have experienced. I feel very enriched to have found Horace Pippin. Tom Hughes a retired Architecture Professor enjoys reading, writing, collecting books and hiking. He lives in rural Eastern Pennsylvania with his family, two dogs and two cats.

The poet George Oppen comments, “There are situations which cannot honorably [be] met by art, and surely no one need fiddle precisely at the moment that the house next door is burning.” To write poetry under such circumstances, he continues, “would be a treason to one’s neighbor.” Committing himself, then, to more direct and conventional forms of response and responsibility, Oppen leaves poetry behind for twenty-five years. The disasters of the 1930s, for Oppen, put poetry into a fundamental question that could not be resolved or overcome. Yet if crisis is continual, then poetry is always turning away from the neighbor in need, always an irresponsible response in a world persistently falling apart. Writing Not Writing both confirms this question into which crisis puts poetry and explores alternative modes of “response” and “responsibility” that poetry makes possible. Reading the silences of Oppen, Carl Rakosi, and Bob Kaufman, the renunciation of Laura Riding, and other more contemporary instances of poetic abnegation, Tom Fisher explores silence, refusal, and disavowal as political and ethical modes of response in a time of continuous crisis. Through a turn away from writing, these poets offer strategies of refusal and departure that leave anagrammatical hollows behind, activating the negational capacities of writing and aesthetics to disrupt the empire of sense, speech, and agency. Fisher’s work is both an engaging and detailed analysis of four individual poets who left poetry behind and a theoretically provocative exploration of the political and ethical possibilities of silence, not-doing, and disavowal. In lucid but nuanced terms, Fisher makes the case that, from at least modernism forward, poetry is marked by refusals of speech and sense in order to open possibilities of response outside conventional forms of responsibility.

In this book, Tom Beghin examines the French piano Beethoven famously acquired from the Erard firm in Paris in 1803. The Erard piano is one of only three extant instruments belonging to Beethoven and is housed in a museum in Austria. Beghin argues that the piano sonatas Beethoven composed between 1803 and 1810-including the "Waldstein" and the "Appassionata"-show the influence of the new French style of pianism and of the Erard in particular, specifically in the uses of tremolo, legato, and the "una corda" pedal, which softens dramatically the volume. Beghin shows that Beethoven was guided by a search for new sonorities and that the specific "touch" provided by the Erard's technology helped to point him toward new compositional horizons, especially at a time when he was forced to withdraw from performance due to his increasing deafness.
