We all have choices to make. Choices: The Beginning of the Sheridan Saga begins when Jackie Hardaway, a recent graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, marries Brian Sheridan, a Texas A&M Aggie, and joins him on his family's ranch in Concho County, Texas. Jackie is ready for the ranch, but the ranch is not ready for her. She runs into resentment and conflict at every turn with Brian's family. The tension becomes unbearable, and Brian must try to make his new bride happy, while keeping peace in his family. Brian's older brother, Harold, is the heir apparent. As ranch manager, Brian finds himself bearing the weight of leadership without the promise of ownership. The ranch is going broke, but Brian's father, Adam, won't accept any of Brian's suggestions for making the old-fashioned ranch profitable. Brian and Harold fight constantly, and Adam invariably sides with Harold. When Adam dies and Harold inherits the ranch, Brian and Jackie find themselves facing a hellish choice. They can remain on the ranch and submit to Harold's authority, or they can leave and make a new life away from the only home Brian has ever known. The time has come to make some life-altering Choices. Tom Huser is a retired Presbyterian minister who lives in Kerrville, Texas. He is now writing his next book. As Pope Benedict XVI has said, "A writer once said that angels can fly because they don't take themselves too seriously. Maybe we could also fly a bit if we didn't think we were so important." Imagine the pontiff, now in his eighties and undoubtedly feeling the pains of growing older himself, cracking a joke about it to one of the cardinals in the Vatican. So must every married couple do as they go about the business of maintaining a loving, committed relationship...but discover that they still get on each other's nerves occasionally. Here is The Third Book of Catholic Jokes, chosen and told by Deacon Tom Sheridan, the former editor of The Catholic New World, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Chicago. He is now retired and living with his wife in Florida. The book also features a Foreword by Father James Martin, SJ, the culture editor of America magazine and the author of Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor and Laughter Are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life. This edition of this popular series of books focuses on the universal--and often hilarious--human experience of relating to one another and growing old together. These stories, jokes, lists, and one-liners are mostly about lay people and are told from a "Catholic" (that is, Roman Catholic) or a "catholic" (that is, universal and about everyone) perspective. They are "clean" and not "mean" and are certainly not intended to offend anyone of any faith or situation in life. But if we can't make fun of ourselves about the difficulties of growing older or trying to maintain our most intimate relationships over a lifetime, then how can we ever expect to "fly a bit"?
Religion is far too important to be taken seriously all the time--so says author Tom Sheridan, who in The Book of Catholic Jokes invites readers to laugh along with him and remember that faith can be--and should be--fun. Sheridan begins by discussing the importance of laughter and the relationship of humor to religion before launching into hilarious jokes. After all, Jesus said, "Unless you become like children, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.

This book is not a biography. I consider them to often times have too much dull material in them. Instead, this is a compilation of dozens and dozens of interesting, even spell binding events in my life, so much so, that readers tell me there isn't a dull paragraph in the 221 pages of my book! In addition to being very readable, I actually believe that any thoughtful person who reads this and wants to, can easily learn how to become physically stronger, mentally more serene and courageous, and even adept at becoming more spiritually oriented." So I say to you, "Read and enjoy!

Tom Sheridan's authoritative account of the complex interplay between government, shipowners, management and waterside workers is a compelling tour de force of labour history. By focusing on the personalities, strategies and values of the players on all he challenges our understanding of the era and the issues.
The 1960's were a time of racial conflict and military confrontation in Asia. After living in New York all his life, the Army transferred Jim Sheridan to a post in the Deep South. At this time the defenders of segregation were making their last stand in a vain attempt to bolster the status quo. His country was being ripped apart along racial lines by these acts. At the same time the war in Vietnam was escalating and opening another deep wound in the soul of his country. He didn't understand the rationality for either of these conflicts, but found himself in the middle of both. The emotional forces of love and hate generated by these conflicts shaped Sheridan from what he was into what he became.
