Hospital For Sinners is the culmination of nearly thirty years of planning and preparation. The idea was first conceived in the late 1970's; thus, we have a storied history of the religious right and its components from 1979 to 2006. During this time period the supposedly light of the world has become darkened by sex-scandals, misappropriation of funds, and sundry other lewd behaviors. Our church leadership is in pursuit of money and power, while hiding behind a mask of self-righteousness and political associations. Does God want Christians to clothe themselves in sackcloth and ashes? No! Nor does He desire one to ride around in a Rolls-Royce either.

In 1993 Ronald McCaul, the chief strategist of the Provos in Northern Ireland and Thomas O'Connor, one of their most famous gunman, escaped from Castlereagh Interrogation Center in Belfast. The two appeared to dissolve into thin air. In July 1998 they reappear in the Republic of Ireland and are arrested by the Garda(the Police Force of the Republic). McCaul, who was sick when arrested, asked O'Connor to take his body home to Wales if he dies. O'Connor agreed to McCaul's request. Within days, McCaul died.. Chief Superintendent Patrick T. Kerrigan of the Garda proposed to use O'Connor as a bait to lure members of the Provos into a trap. The trap failed, O'Connor was rescued by the Provos and whisked into Northern Ireland. Kerrigan and his unit become the butt of both official and public criticism. A plan is hatched to transport McCaul's body to Wales, but the authorities from both the Republic and Northern Ireland decided to have McCaul's remains cremated within days. This is to prevent the Provos the opportunity for a public funeral with speeches by the Provos' firebrands. In addition, the British SIS(MI-5) were aware of O'Connors activities from recorded telephone conversations.

In Part-Time for All, Jennifer Nedelsky and Tom Malleson propose a plan to radically restructure both work and care. As such, they offer a solution to four pressing problems: the inequality of caregivers; family stress from competing demands of work and care; chronic time scarcity; and policymakers who are ignorant about the care that life requires--the care/policy divide. Nedelsky and Malleson argue that no capable adult should do paid work for more than 30 hours per week, so that they can contribute substantial amounts of time to unpaid care for family, friends, or other "communities of care." While the authors focus primarily on human-to-human care, they also include care for the earth as a vital part of this shift. All of the elements of Nedelsky and Malleson's proposal already exist piecemeal in various countries. What is needed is to integrate the key reforms and scale them up. The result is an actionable plan to motivate widespread take-up of part-time work and part-time care. Highlighting how these new norms can create synergies of institutional transformation while fostering a cultural shift in the value of care and work, this "care manifesto" identifies the deep changes that are needed and lays out a feasible path forward.

Post-Rationalism takes the experimental journal of psychoanalysis and philosophy, Cahiers pour l'Analyse, as its main source. Established by students of Louis Althusser in 1966, the journal has rarely figured in the literature, although it contained the first published work of authors now famous in contemporary critical thought, including Alain Badiou, Jean-Claude Milner, Luce Irigaray, André Green and Jacques-Alain Miller. The Cahiers served as a testing ground for the combination of diverse intellectual sources indicative of the period, including the influential reinvention of Freud and Marx undertaken by Lacan and Althusser, and the earlier post-rationalist philosophy of science pioneered by Gaston Bachelard, Georges Canguilhem and Alexandre Koyré. This book is a wide-ranging analysis of the intellectual foundations of structuralism, re-connecting the work of young post-Lacanian and post-Althusserian theorists with their predecessors in French philosophy of science. Tom Eyers provides an important corrective to standard histories of the period, focussing on the ways in which French epistemological writing of the 1930s and 1940s - especially that of Bachelard and Canguilhem - laid the ground for the emergence of structuralism in the 1950s and 1960s, thus questioning the standard historical narrative that posits structuralism as emerging chiefly in reaction to phenomenology and existentialism.

In this autobiographical sweep through the mists of baseball's past, the author recounts his summer of professional baseball as a pitcher/bus driver for a Class C team in Missoula, Montana in 1956. Long road trips through the Rockies gave him time to reflect on his place in the infrastructure of the game of baseball as well as to search for sexual fulfillment somewhere in the far reaches of the minor league system. The dirt and the grime of bush league baseball did nothing either to dim the author's hopes that he would succeed as a pitcher or to discourage him from seeking a woman whose sexual frustrations matched his. Interwoven among the descriptions of games won and lost is a panoply of life off the field in a small town for whose citizens the Missoula Timberjacks were the only diversion. A visit from resident hookers, a near-disaster on a bus run, skinny-dipping in an icy river, racing another team's bus through noon traffic - all color the perceptions of a young man who brought a keen sensitivity to his summer of new experiences. Always aware that at any moment he could be released by the team and conscious of a yearning for some semblance of sexual gratification, the author battled his way through a summer that exposed his average gifts as an athlete and as a lothario. There follow a handful of personal essays and reflective notes on all manner of things, from the author's adventures with earthquakes and floods during his sabbatical in the South Pacific to his attempt to separate fact from fiction when dealing with hero worship in a high school setting. An overlay of dry humor imbues this collection with enough irony to disguise the lack of substance. Fortunately, the price is right.
