Reflecting upon his own prior experiences as Writer, PhD Student embarks on an ethnographic research project which seeks to explain the relationship between Boys’ creative writing and identity. A view of identity as performance is adopted, a main cast of year 6 Boys is assembled, and the stage of the year 6 primary classroom and the secondary school is set. Undertaking participant observation, PhD Student sends his reflections as emails to PhD Supervisor but as their dialogue takes hold, questions relating to the problematic nature of research and representation proliferate. Which identity is PhD Student performing in the classroom: himself, Mr Dobson, Writer or Tom? Is self-reflexivity enough? To what extent can the Boys’ identities ever be known? Rather than silencing these problems, PhD Student looks for a form of writing which lays bare the messiness of research. He rejects the linearity of the traditional form and writes his thesis as a self-conscious fiction: a dialogue on a train between himself, a post/structuralist academic, and You, a humanist non-academic. As PhD Student’s data is analysed, critiqued and deconstructed from both essentialist and interpretivist perspectives, the impossibility of objective representation is explored. Within its own frame of reference, PhD Student’s analysis of the Boys’ writing offers a theoretical framework for thinking about creative writing in terms of identity and agency. However, the thesis-script itself is primarily a methodological critique: one that shows that no matter what is written on pages, between the words, between the letters, there will always be the Unnamable.
Part Time for All offers solutions to 4 pressing problems: inequality for care-givers; family stress from demands of work and care; chronic time scarcity; policy makers who are ignorant of care and care-givers with little access to policy making--the care/policy divide. Only a radical restructuring of both work and care can redress all these problems. We propose new norms: no one does paid work for more than 30 hours a week, and everyone contributes roughly 22 hours of unpaid care to family, friends, or their chosen community of care. Other approaches provide only partial solutions. For example, wages for housework, or excellent daycare, or flexible work hours would not overcome the care/policy divide. We explain why everyone needs to acquire the knowledge and dispositions that come from the sustained experience of providing care throughout one's life. We show how work can be transformed to allow time for care giving, and how these new norms will generate a cultural shift in the value accorded care. While we focus primarily on human-to-human care, we include care for the earth. The final two chapters describe how these processes of transformation could be feasibly accomplished and why these changes are possible in high income countries within our current global economy. Every one of our proposals already exists in at least one country; the task is to integrate the key reforms and scale them up. Given the magnitude of the current problems, deep changes are needed. This Element presents the history, research, and future potential for an alternative and effective model of policing called 'legitimacy-based policing'. This model is driven by social psychology theory and informed by research findings showing that legitimacy of the police shapes public acceptance of police decisions, willingness to cooperate with the police, and citizen engagement in communities. Police legitimacy is found to be strongly tied to the level of fairness exercised by police authority, i.e. to procedural justice. Taken together these two ideas create an alternative framework for policing that relies upon the policed community's willing acceptance of and cooperation with the law. Studies show that this framework is as effective in lowering crime as the traditional carceral paradigm, an approach that relies on the threat or use of force to motivate compliance. It is also more effective in motivating willing cooperation and in encouraging people to engage in their communities in ways that promote social, economic and political development.
