People may wonder why I got a cover on my book like I do. Well, all through my life, I come to realize no matter what I went and got myself into, the Good Lord has had me in the palm of His hand the entire time. I titled my book All in Time because all in time, being behind prison walls gave me time to think and get my mind right. And on the other hand, all in time, everything will eventually fall together in life. So I would look at it both ways, and that's why I decided to use that title for my book. Once you read this book, it will make sense to you for the way I do things the way I did. No one has pushed life more to the limit than I have at times, but now it's time to sit back and enjoy life for what it is.
Following in the footsteps of the late great Lester Bangs -- the most revered and irreverent of rock 'n' roll critics -- twenty-four celebrated writers have penned stories inspired by great songs. Just as Bangs cast new light on a Rod Stewart classic with his story "Maggie May," about a wholly unexpected connection between an impressionable young man and an aging, alcoholic hooker, the diverse, electrifying stories here use songs as a springboard for a form dubbed the lit riff. Alongside Bangs's classic work, you'll find stories by J.T. LeRoy, who puts a recovering teenage drug abuser in a dentist's chair with nothing but the Foo Fighters's "Everlong" -- blaring through the P.A. -- to fight the pain; Jonathan Lethem, whose narrator looks back on his lost innocence just as an extramarital affair careens to an end -- this to the tune "Speeding Motorcycle" as recorded by Yo La Tengo; and Jennifer Belle, who envisions a prequel to Paul Simon's "Graceland" -- one that takes place at a children's birthday party replete with a real live kangaroo. With original contributions from Tom Perrotta, Nelson George, Amanda Davis, Lisa Tucker, Aimee Bender, Darin Strauss, and many more -- riffing on everyone from Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen to the White Stripes, Cat Power, and Bob Marley -- this is both an astounding collection of short stories and an extraordinary experiment in words and music. Sporting flashy suits, fast cars and a harem of mistresses, Leroy 'Nicky' Barnes presided over a staggering multinational heroin dealership that pushed dope and laundered money with the efficiency of a Fortune 500 company. Despite Nixon's creation of the Drug Enforcement Agency and New York's adoption of zero tolerance drug laws, Barnes' operation seemed impregnable. How did a small-time hustler and heroin addict end up on the cover of the NY Times Magazine as Mr Untouchable? Barnes was convicted in 1977 by the first anonymous jury in the US.
This book is not a biography. I consider them to often times have too much dull material in them. Instead, this is a compilation of dozens and dozens of interesting, even spell binding events in my life, so much so, that readers tell me there isn't a dull paragraph in the 221 pages of my book! In addition to being very readable, I actually believe that any thoughtful person who reads this and wants to, can easily learn how to become physically stronger, mentally more serene and courageous, and even adept at becoming more spiritually oriented." So I say to you, "Read and enjoy!
Tom Mann is an American original. Growing up in Depression-era Alabama, for him fishing was more than a recreational activity-it was a way of putting dinner on the table. Following his father's simple advice, "to catch fish, you have to find fish," six-year-old Tom came up with an innovative way of finding the drop-offs in a creek where fish seek refuge from predators. As a young teenager, he began to design and craft special lures, always with an eye toward tricking the freshwater dean of the deep-the largemouth bass. Tom's innate talent in outsmarting the competition above and below the waterline quickly took him from local hero to three-time world bass fishing champion to living legend. He also tapped into his skill for designing lures, building a multi-million-dollar enterprise that has sold over one billion lures to date in major sporting goods and fishing retailers around the world, all with his smiling face on the packages. Yet despite the prestige and fame of a forty-year career, he still resides where it all began-deep in the heart of the South. Filled with touching childhood stories and hilarious down-home fisherman's lore, "Think Like a Fish reveals how Mann quite literally learned to "think like a fish." He explains the technique and mindset that enable him to lure a fish from thirty yards away into a circle the size of a hula hoop; how he "trains" bass to jump right into his boat; and how he purportedly managed to lure a shark to shore with rod and reel. But in addition to the fishing techniques and words of wisdom, Mann explores the path that got him where he is today-a poignant story of determination, Southern grit, and good-ole-boy charm. Full of gentle humor andwit, this book brings to life the allure of the South and one of its favorite pastimes.
