In 2008 Tom Kelly Inc produced an "all turkey" book of essays, which included 34 chapters devoted to turkey hunting. These chapters came from Tom Kelly's early books. Tom continued to write and published 9 more books through 2017. THE BEST OF TOM KELLY II contains 29 Wild Turkey chapters from those new volumes. Black leather bound, gold foil stamping, marbled end pages, and red silk marking ribbon.
Colonel Tom Kelly, author of the Tenth Legion, is proud to announce the release of THE BEST OF TOM KELLY. This collector's edition contains 34 chapters of Tom's best Wild Turkey hunting stories. The chapters were picked by Jim Spencer and Jim Casada, two of America's most prolific outdoor writers. Each chapter comes from a previous Tom Kelly book. Each chapter was picked especially for the Wild Turkey story content. This is pure turkeys and pure Tom Kelly. The 336 page collector's edition is green leather bound, signed and numbered with gold gilded edges, marbled end pages and a red silk marking ribbon.
Tom Kelly gives us more 9 more chapters, continuing the themes of his previous 21 books. In this collection Tom explores the future of the Wild Turkey, the Hunt and the Habitat, which means the timber industry to Tom. No Place to Hide, is a fine example of Tom Kelly's thought process at 88 years young.
A Classic Father-Daughter Love Story by Colonel Tom Kelly. Selected Childhood chapters from; Dealer’s Choice, Better on A Rising Tide, A Year Outside, The Boat, & A Few Loose Chapters. “Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale, her infinite variety.” -William Shakespeare
Better On A Rising Tide contains 22 humourous articles from Tom Kelly's magazine past. Tom wrote for all the great blood sport magazines in the 1970s and up to the 1990s when articles were shortened to make more room for style and ads. If you loved Tom's 1973 TENTH LEGION, you will certainly be pleased with Tom Kelly's shrewd and perspective writing aout rural folk. And of course the bird.
In 2002 Tom Kelly self published his 7th book, Faces in the Crowd. We sold out of hardcover copies in 2005. This re-print is a Special Signed Edition with a few pictures and a silk marking ribbon. There are only 250 copies. Tom Kelly will personally sign all 250 copies on chapter 15, An Afternoon on the Handles.
Tom's title comes from a line in William Shakespeare's play, Anthony and Cleopatra. "Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale/ Her Infinite Variety." The phrase easily could apply to the honorable sport of Wild Turkey Hunting. As all Tenth Legion members know, there is an infinite variety of birds, hunters, locations and...tricks a bird can play on a human.
Unlike the .300 hitter in baseball who fails seven times out of ten and is a howling success and becomes a millionaire because of it, I cannot tell what your percentage in turkey hunting may be, nor can I tell you mine. I have called this book The Other Seven because it is based on the number of failures in a string of ten times at bat as if it were a ball game. Considering the things I do not know about turkeys, it is entirely possible that the book should be called “the other seventeen”. I have no idea what yours may be and I will not even try to guess.
One of the advantages of growing old is that you do not have to worry about what other people think, and the only penalty you have to suffer from taking an outrageous position on any subject, is the risk of being ignored." Colonel Tom Kelly, presents his personal opinions in POINT OF VIEW.
Tom Kelly, the legendary signature voice of USC sports for nearly five decades, combines with coauthor Tom Hoffarth of the Daily News of Los Angeles to take Trojan fans on a journey of memories and previously untold anecdotes from and about many of the great coaches, players, teams, and games in USC football history, as well as other sports. His story in Southern California starts with the recommendation of Jack Buck that he be hired as Chick Hearn’s color man on USC football and basketball games in 1961. During Kelly’s forty-plus year run, the Trojans boasted five Heisman Trophy winners, won five national championships, and played in 14 Rose Bowls and 24 overall bowl games. Kelly, who won five Golden Mike Awards and was named California’s Sportscaster of the Year three times, was inducted into USC’s Hall of Fame. His stories and anecdotes will become a must-read for all Trojan fans.
Thirty five years ago I really thought I knew something about turkeys and not only did I understand them, I was perfectly willing to tell you anything you wanted to know about them. In the last two or three years all kinds of things have happened that have caused my firm convictions to lose a great deal of their rigidity. In some instances the convictions have turned out to be wrong. In many cases their sharp corners have been knocked off. All sorts of facts that are new and strange have come floating to the surface and many of these rock solid opinions of bygone years have become decidedly sick and unhealthy, which is the reason for the title of this book." -Tom Kelly
As far as the Southeast is concerned, I am only familiar with the conditions that were in effect after 1900. The old inhabitants I refer to were those people and their descendants that occupied the lands after the colonization of North America by Europeans. What this book proposes to do is give you a flavor of who the people are that work out there, what they do at work, and how they do it. I spent an entire career in their company and they are an extremely lively and interesting collection of free swingers.
Tom Kelly's 9th book takes us back to Tom's turkey hunting roots. He brings you another 14 chapters of fair chase, great human observation and frustrating Wild Turkey situations. Entered for a Pulitzer Prize in Letters 2006.
Over the years Colonel Kelly has written short stories, titled, Short Spurs for the final pages of the National Wild Turkey Federation's magazine, Turkey Country. Now we are happy to announce the publication of a soft cover book, Tom has titled, Around the Edges 2. This 160 page 2nd edition is full of essays, poems, tall tales and some humor from the Colonel.
ABSENT COMPANIONS, is about Wild Turkeys, lost Humming Birds, lost friends, and about the loss of an entire circus. You will just have to read the book to understand. "After your age has gotten into double digits, and the first digit of the number is an 8, unless you have spent an awful lot of your time in prison, you have run through a lot of companions and made a lot of friends and acquaintances. Not that the people you know today are any less interesting than those of other years, but a lot of the interesting ones have already gone to that great wood yard in the sky. I take a drink to these vanished companions every night of my life partly in gratitude for having known them and partly for a selfish reason, namely, that I warm my id at their coals.
What this book attempts to do, is to discuss some of the changes, and some of the changes to the changes, that occur from time to time for what appears to be no reason whatsoever. Nobody truly understands turkeys all of the time, in all of their configurations. Nobody--and that includes you and me. All we can do is swing the bat and hope.
This book investigates the relationship between context and leadership in post-conflict Cambodia. Building on the understanding that approaches to leadership are tightly woven within the contexts that leaders operate, the authors examine the case of primary school leadership in Cambodia. A low-income and post-conflict society rocked by civil war and genocide between the 1960s and the 1990s, the country is – perhaps unsurprisingly – faced with numerous challenges as it engages in the process of national rehabilitation and reconstruction, particularly in relation to the education system. The authors provide a comprehensive historical background to primary school leadership not only in Cambodia, but in post-conflict environments more broadly: informing school leadership preparation, development and support, and facilitating understanding of the context in which school leaders work. This book will be of value to students and scholars of primary school education and education in post-conflict countries, as well as to practitioners and policy makers.
Tom Morton-Smith is an Olivier Award-winning playwright whose works for the stage span intimate theatrical biopics to scientific explorations and broad epics. In this, his first play collection, his major stage works are brought together for the first time in a definitive edition showcasing his extensive range as a dramatist, and introduced by the author himself. In Doggerland: “Morton-Smith's script is both poetic and philosophical, a thoughtful meditation on the impact of loss . . . a touching and funny play that explores the lives of four people brought together by tragedy and hope." (WhatsonStage) Oppenheimer: “A blast from start to finish . . . Tom Morton-Smith's epic new play . . . ambitious in the very best way . . . it really delivers its payload in its final phase, as Oppenheimer finally rejects his humanity in favour of doing something truly inhuman to the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki." (Time Out) The Earthworks: "This small, often funny play focusing on two fragile people rubbing up against each other at a moment of change has its own quiet heroism. What appears to be a romantic comedy turns into something more unsettling ... raising questions about the limits of knowledge and our capacity to face up to the future." (Guardian) Ravens: "An elegant study of pressure and paranoia . . . Recounting the gruelling, 21-game clash, Ravens: Spassky vs Fischer is a taut and cerebral character study." (The Stage)
You know when a song gets stuck in your head? Round and round ... over and over. I've got that right now ... only it's not a piece of music ... it's not a tune ... it's a phrase: home is where the heart is ... home is where the heart is." A coastline erodes, a house falls into the sea. A mysterious brother and sister arrive looking for answers. Marnie clings to her camera, taking photographs of strangers and places. She has come to say goodbye to a life she never knew whilst her brother Linus is keen to make a fresh start. But when they find Simon and daughter Kelly, reeling in the wake of tragedy, all four lives are to become inextricably linked under the weight of the past.
Tom Mangold is known to millions as the face of BBC TV's flagship current affairs programme Panorama and as its longest-serving reporter. Splashed! is the 'antidote to the conventional journalist's autobiography' - a compelling, hilarious and raucous revelation of the events that marked an extraordinary life in journalism. Mangold describes his National Service in Germany, where he worked part-time as a smuggler, through his years in the 1950s on Fleet Street's most ruthless newspapers, a time when chequebook journalism ruled and shamelessness was a major skill. Recruited by the BBC, he spent forty years as a broadcaster, developing a reputation for war reporting and major investigations. From world exclusives with fallen women in the red-top days to chaotic interviews with Presidents, Splashed! offers a rare glimpse of the personal triumphs and disasters of a life in reporting, together with fascinating revelations about the stories that made the headlines on Mangold's remarkable journey from print to Panorama.
From Simon & Schuster, Slave of My Thirst is Tom Holland's novel following the aftermath of an investigation of a vampire attack. Some 35 years ago I was somewhat precariously balanced in a drilling derrick aligning a whipstock into a directional hole in North Holland by the Stokenbury method, and no doubt thinking to myself that I was at the very forefront of technology. During the intervening period it has become obvious to many of us that some of the most significant technical advances in the oil business have been made in drilling, and particularly in the fields of offshore and directional drilling. It has also become apparent that the quality of the technical literature describing these advances has not kept pace with that of the advances themselves in many instances. A particular glaring example of this has been in the field of directional drilling where a large literature gap has existed for many years. I am delighted to see this gap now filled with the present volume by my friend Tom Inglis. Indeed it is only after reading his comprehensive book that I realise the extent of my own ignorance of the latest techniques of directional drilling and how desirable it was to have an authoritative text on the subject. I feel sure that this volume will be welcomed by the industry and warmly recommend it to all who are in any way involved and interested in the fascinating world of drilling.
In their third and final screen teaming, Judy Garland and Gene Kelly starred together in the MGM musical Summer Stock. Despite its riveting production history, charismatic lead actors, and classic musical moments, the movie has not received the same attention as other musicals from MGM’s storied dream factory. In C’mon, Get Happy: The Making of “Summer Stock,” authors David Fantle and Tom Johnson present a comprehensive study of this 1950 motion picture, from start to finish and after its release. The production coincided at a critical point in the careers of Kelly and an emotionally spent Garland. Kelly, who starred in An American in Paris just one year later, was at the peak of his abilities. On the other hand, Summer Stock was Garland’s final film at MGM, and she gamely completed it despite her own personal struggles. Summer Stock includes Kelly’s favorite solo dance routine and Garland’s signature number “Get Happy.” The authors discuss in rich detail the contributions of the cast (which included Gloria DeHaven, Eddie Bracken, Phil Silvers, and Marjorie Main); the director (Charles Walters); the producer (Joe Pasternak); the script writers (George Wells and Sy Gomberg); the songwriters (which included Harry Warren and Mack Gordon); and top MGM executives (Louis B. Mayer and Dore Schary). The volume features extensive interviews, conducted by the authors, with Kelly, Walters, Warren, and others, who shared their recollections of making the movie. Deeply researched, C’mon, Get Happy reveals the studio system at work during Hollywood’s Golden Era. Additionally, the authors have written a special section called “Taking Stock” that buttonholes numerous contemporary dancers, singers, choreographers, musicians, and even Garland impersonators for their take on Summer Stock, its stars, and any enduring legacy they think the film might have. Artists from Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ben Vereen, and Tommy Tune to Garland’s and Kelly’s daughters, Lorna Luft and Kerry Kelly Novick, respectively, offer their unique perspective on the film and its stars.
Run It Out By: Tom Dougherty When John receives a diary from his mom, he’s skeptical of its value at first. After all, what’s a 12-year-old boy got to write about anyway? But he sticks it out. Mom says it will help; and things really haven’t been the same since her diagnosis. Offering a glimpse through the windows of a family battling breast cancer, Tom Dougherty’s Run It Out beautifully captures the perspective of a mother who understands the uncertainty of her future living with breast cancer and a son who does not see the nature of his mother’s fight.
“Vivid characters carry the action in latest book about grisly Metro Detroit murder . . . a page turner” from the true crime author of Darker Than Night (The Detroit News). Washington Township, Michigan: Valentine’s Day, 2007. Stephen Grant filed a missing person’s report on his beloved wife, Tara. The stay-at-home father of two was beside himself with despair. Why would Tara abandon him and their family? Was she involved with another man? Stephen’s frantic, emotional search for Tara made national headlines, and the case was featured on Dateline among other television shows and news outlets. But key elements in Stephen’s story still weren’t adding up: Why did he wait five days to go to police? What was the nature of his relationship with his children’s beautiful, nineteen-year-old babysitter? Why did Stephen have cuts on his hands, and random bruises? Then, the police made a gruesome discovery. Parts of Tara Grant’s body started turning up around the woods near the Grant’s home. The truth was finally coming to light . . . and, after a two-day manhunt, Stephen admitted to having killed Tara—first strangling her, then cutting her body into fourteen pieces before burying them. This is the shocking true story about a bitter, cheating husband whose crimes were revealed by the Blood in the Snow. Please note that the photos that appear in the print edition of the title do not appear in the e-book. “[Blood in the Snow is] the third book about the case but it’s also the only one that had police cooperation. And that makes all the difference . . . a wild ride of a read that’s still compelling.” —Metro Times

The first official publisher’s anthology featuring the exemplary talents of the authors of BLACK BED SHEET BOOKS! "Black Bed Sheet is not only a publisher of fantastically creative horror books but knows the meaning of heart and integrity....Grabowsky has taken BBS to heights that few could have imagined with his drive, determination and talent, along with the talent in his stable. If you haven't read anything from BBS, it's past time you did but it's never too late!" --- Gene Tipton, A SHOT IN THE DARK COMICS "I had this idea for an anthology. A crazy, outside the box thought that I hoped would at least ignite some interest. Well, it not only ignited, the damn thing drenched the entire office at Black Bed Sheet Books and its publisher Nicholas Grabowsky in a orange and red hue of excitement. This has now become a solid joint effort spanning the many talented authors of Black Bed Sheet Books, highlighting the core value of writing: character depth. When Nick gave me the green light, I began to construct this list of talented writers. Some are veterans of the writing landscape [such as myself], others are brand new and cutting their jagged incisors deep into the skin of the publishing world. My only requirement for the authors became the simple task of all, write a story that has deep characters and emotion. A story evolves only so far as the characters propel it. I wanted the characters stripped down to their skeletons. Heroes, villains, somewhere in the middle? Bring them through the emotional grinder, chew them up, spit them out, where will it take the reader? Or, what about a few stories with different spins on such figures as Dracula, Adolph Hitler, the Devil, and Snow White. A few of these stories are dark in nature, or splashed with a form of comic ingenuity. Others are entrenched in history with a different spin that left me squirming in my seat. These authors are bright, fresh, talented, comedic, compassionate, and downright scary when they want to be. So sit back, turn off the lights, and read the book. Or die. I wouldn’t want that to happen to you, but then again once you step inside our world, anything can happen. Close your eyes. Take a breath. The sounds you hear are real. There is no turning back. Keep reading. Or die." --from Introduction by Jason Gehlert --Featuring the talents of— Fred Wiehe - Cinsearae Santiago - Brandon Ford Jessica Lynne Gardner - Lincoln Crisler - Jason Gehlert - William Cook - Reyna Young - Tom Sawyer - K.K. - Rey Otis - Shannon Lee - B.L.
