Society today shows signs of disintegration. Institutions such as the monarchy, parliament, and the Church itself have come under intense scrutiny and deeply disturbing weaknesses have been exposed. We are bombarded with news of wars and injustice and the advance of science poses new moral dilemmas that leave us confused and looking for help. In the midst of such perplexity, Tom Smail invites us to 'survey the wondrous cross' - not, he says, to find instant answers to particular questions, but so that we can find our bearings and our confidence in the way God deals with confusion and destructiveness in the world. We can also discover there clues about how we might respond to the difficult situations we have to face. The book examines many different perspectives on the cross: from the New Testament themes of reconciliation, sacrifice, justice, and freedom to the more contemporary approaches of sharing of suffering and victory over sin. Throughout, Tom Smail seeks to instruct and explain the biblical teaching, unlocking its meaning and motivating us to a fresh devotional and practical response to what God has done for us in the death of Jesus. 'Windows on the Cross' contains questions at the end of each chapter and is ideal for reflective reading by individuals and groups. It will be widely welcomed.
The death of Jesus is commonly regarded as the one radically novel perspective from which the problem of suffering is viewed in the New Testament, as opposed to the appropriation of viewpoints present elsewhere in contemporary writings and in the Old Testament. Tom Holmén's focus on the death of Jesus as a source of New Testament theodicy reveals a two-fold reasoning: the lasting relevance of the theme of Jesus' death on the cross and theodicy, and the lack of thorough and sustained New Testament investigations into this theme. Holmén's argument focuses on the changes in the concept of suffering occasioned by the unprecedented sacrifice of Jesus. He explores both the derivative nature of suffering as God's retribution or a test for discipline – in line with the traditions known in the time contemporary to the formation of the New Testament – and the sharp, wholly new contrast of suffering as intercessory in the crucifixion of Christ, Son of God, appearing to the world as 'impossible'. Holmén considers many issues in his discussion, including the context of providence and covenant, and the problem that Jesus' death causes for theodicy. He also examines other perspectives, such as the writings of Paul, and practical considerations of coping with anguish. Taken as a whole, this study provides a fresh examination of the crucifixion's central role for understanding New Testament approaches to suffering.
With the increase of globalization of business and industry, IT products and services are often produced and marketed across geographical cultural boundaries without adequate consideration of culture. There is a high probability that IT products and services developed in one country may not be effectively used in another country, which may hinder their market penetration, sales, and use. Based on research and practice, Cross-Cultural Design for IT Products and Services provides a resource for human factors engineers, designers, and marketing professionals who define and develop IT products and services for the global market. With its extensive review of cross-cultural theory and cross-cultural design literature, it is also a resource for those who are interested in research on cross-cultural design. The book presents an overview of the dimensions of culture that have implications for human information processing and affective response. It examines a set of user interface design guidelines grouped into five areas: language, use of color, icons and images, navigation, and information architecture. Also, it addresses physical ergonomics and anthropometry issues. The text translates theory and guidelines into a practical methodology and discusses how to integrate methods of cross-cultural design into a standard engineering process for product development. The authors review and reappraise theories, models, principles, and techniques for design of IT products and services that will be marketed globally. They provide guidelines for user interface design across North American, Asian, and other cultures. Applying the guidelines within the methodological framework provided will enhance the usability and effectiveness of the IT product or service, and contribute to greater user satisfaction, increased productivity, higher sales, and lower product support costs.
