Winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for History From the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes and a National Book Award, a brilliant biography of Gen. George Armstrong Custer that radically changes our view of the man and his turbulent times. In this magisterial biography, T. J. Stiles paints a portrait of Custer both deeply personal and sweeping in scope, proving how much of Custer’s legacy has been ignored. He demolishes Custer’s historical caricature, revealing a volatile, contradictory, intense person—capable yet insecure, intelligent yet bigoted, passionate yet self-destructive, a romantic individualist at odds with the institution of the military (he was court-martialed twice in six years). The key to understanding Custer, Stiles writes, is keeping in mind that he lived on a frontier in time. In the Civil War, the West, and many areas overlooked in previous biographies, Custer helped to create modern America, but he could never adapt to it. He freed countless slaves yet rejected new civil rights laws. He proved his heroism but missed the dark reality of war for so many others. A talented combat leader, he struggled as a manager in the West. He tried to make a fortune on Wall Street yet never connected with the new corporate economy. Native Americans fascinated him, but he could not see them as fully human. A popular writer, he remained apart from Ambrose Bierce, Mark Twain, and other rising intellectuals. During Custer’s lifetime, Americans saw their world remade. His admirers saw him as the embodiment of the nation’s gallant youth, of all that they were losing; his detractors despised him for resisting a more complex and promising future. Intimate, dramatic, and provocative, this biography captures the larger story of the changing nation in Custer’s tumultuous marriage to his highly educated wife, Libbie; their complicated relationship with Eliza Brown, the forceful black woman who ran their household; as well as his battles and expeditions. It casts surprising new light on a near-mythic American figure, a man both widely known and little understood.
NATIONAL BESTSELLER WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD In this groundbreaking biography, T.J. Stiles tells the dramatic story of Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt, the combative man and American icon who, through his genius and force of will, did more than perhaps any other individual to create modern capitalism. Meticulously researched and elegantly written, The First Tycoon describes an improbable life, from Vanderbilt’s humble birth during the presidency of George Washington to his death as one of the richest men in American history. In between we see how the Commodore helped to launch the transportation revolution, propel the Gold Rush, reshape Manhattan, and invent the modern corporation. Epic in its scope and success, the life of Vanderbilt is also the story of the rise of America itself.

A true crime story of a gruesome double homicide in the Jim Crow South, and the manhunt and trial that followed. In Oxford, Mississippi, the dawn of the twentieth century seemed to present a sweeping landscape of progress and possibility. But under this veneer of technological advancement, cultural achievement, and prosperity lurked a stubborn core of racial discrimination, rampant criminal brutality, and violence. On a Sunday morning in 1901, the mutilated corpses of two federal marshals were discovered in the smoldering remains of the home of a notorious local malefactor. The murders, committed by moonshiner and counterfeiter Will Mathis and his father-in-law’s servant Orlando Lester, captivated the nation. The crimes ignited a manhunt, a trial marked by desperate lies and legerdemain, and a media frenzy around the hanging of a white man and a black man side by side. This enthralling account centers on two men—judged unequal in life but equal in death. The story draws on primary sources to craft a spellbinding narrative of singular immediacy and vitality. With the consummate skill of a master raconteur, author T. J. Ray powerfully evokes an era, a community, and its people.

The early eighties was a turbulent time in Texas. The real estate industry was on the greatest boom since the discovery of oil. The boom attracted more than the usual number of men looking for their fortune. They wanted it all. In the lower rungs of this society the men wanted the same things. They were willing to do anything to have it. Into this boiling pot a young widow was tossed. She married out of love, never dreaming she was a trophy wife. Her husband had been on the fringes of this boom. He had friends in all the right places. She inherited these friends. Could she survive in a world she was not prepared for? Could she save her son and herself from greed, destruction and attempted murder? The betrayal of all she held dear?
Uncontrolled population growth, a significant problem for many countries, depresses real living standards in all developing areas. As a corollary, un controlled population growth also stresses the ability to deliver adequate reproductive health care on both national and individual levels. To focus on this and related problems an International Congress to examine many aspects of male and female Reproductive Health Center Care was held on 10-15 October 1982 in Maui, Hawaii, USA. This volume is a result of the proceedings from the 'Symposium on Male Fertility and its Regulation' which was a part of the Reproductive Health Care Congress. The organizers of this symposium recognized the need to focus male reproductive understanding on contraceptive development. The ultimate objective was and still is to produce a variety of safe and effective male contraceptives similar to that accomplished in the female. Speakers were invited to review the state of the art in several areas related to male contra ception, reproductive toxicity and reproductive biology. The abstracts of these sessions were published as a special issue of Archives of Andrology (Vol. 9, No.1, August, 1982). Subsequently, this volume was assembled from key papers presented at the Symposium. Additionally, invited man uscripts from leaders in specific areas were solicited to provide additional range to the topics covered.
