Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) is one of the most important figures of postwar American art, for both his own abstract paintings and his influence as the legendary teacher of generations of artists in Germany, New York, and Provincetown. His presence in New York, a link to Wassily Kandinsky, the Cubists, and Fauves, catalyzed the movement ultimately known as Abstract Expressionism, whose influence still pervades the aesthetic categories and practices of art today. This volume features essays on Hofmann's life and work by Helmut Friedel and Tina Dickey; excerpts from Hofmann's own statements; full documentation of his career (including chronology, selected bibliography, and comprehensive list of solo and group exhibitions); and thirty-two large colorplates of works from 1942 to 1965 by this supreme colorist, his finest paintings from European and American collections. They richly represent his unique painting style, which conveys a deeply personal experience of color that has lost none of its power to fascinate the viewer.

Often motivated to create profit-driven biotech start-up companies or to serve on their advisory boards, university researchers now commonly operate under serious conflicts of interest. These conflicts stand in the way of giving full consideration to the social and ethical consequences of the technologies they seek to develop. Too often, bioentrepreneurs have worked to obscure how these technologies could alter human evolution and to hide the social costs of keeping on this path. Tracing the rise and cultural politics of biotechnology from a critical perspective, Biotech Juggernaut aims to correct the informational imbalance between producers of biotechnologies on the one hand, and the intended consumers of these technologies and general society, on the other. It explains how the converging vectors of economic, political, social, and cultural elements driving biotechnology’s swift advance constitutes a juggernaut. It concludes with a reflection on whether it is possible for an informed public to halt what appears to be a runaway force.

Who would decide my destiny? How could I live and not die, not aborted? I was left at the bottom of the bed so that I could stay alive. This is about learning to love through pain, growing up as a victorious woman in Jesus Christ. It is about making it through the storms of life, riding the waves of life, and holding on to the anchor of your soul. Have a full understanding that God said, “He would never leave you nor forsake you! Be still and know that ‘I am God.’” Move forward. Don’t look back. There is nothing in the rearview mirror of life! Drive forward. Don’t look in the rearview mirror of life! There are Stop signs of life, Yield signs, and Merge signs. Always listen to the voice of the Lord. He says in his Word in John 10:4–5, “And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice, and a stranger will they not follow, but flee from him: for they know not the voice of a stranger.” Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.” For the “cracks of life,” 1 Corinthians 15:58 says, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” You learn to give life to someone else and take it from them! Encourage someone else, not discourage them. Take your title of life; it has your name on it. Listen for the winds of life! It will tell you which way to go! You can do all things through Christ who will strengthen you.
