E-learning encompasses many things to many people. Elliot Massie, a leading e-learning guru, states that "Online learning is not about taking a course and putting it on desktop. It encompasses "Combination of learning services and technology to provide high value integrated learning anytime and anyplace". GOLEª aims to create a virtual learning simulator that is capable of customizing the pedagogy to the learners learning style. To properly design learn by doing scenarios, the learning environment must balance the learning objectives with authenticity. The key is to build a realistic environment which is complex enough to promote expectation failure and robust enough to support the learner at that point. Two of the major learning objectives for a goal oriented learning environment are the application of facts and building specific skills. The purpose of this research was to design, develop, implement and assess a Goal Oriented Learning Environment (GOLE) into the Civil and Environmental Engineering curriculum at Lehigh University. Also to design, develop, implement, and assess Internet-based instructional systems into the CEE curriculum. To achieve these objectives, a GOLE was implemented into two courses that were used as case studies in this research. These case studies describe the instructional design method utilized and the assessment involved to evaluate the courses. The instructional design method utilized nine steps: Discuss, Determine, Decide, Design, Develop, Implement, Assessment, Evaluation and Evolve. The designing of GOLE focused on: content, delivery platform, character development and story line. In order to assess and evaluate the GOLE, a series of five evaluations were created in order perform the analysis: skill matrix, course, performance, website evaluations and the DISC profile. The data was then analyzed to determine what parts of the course were effective.

Timothy Campbell argues that these fashion texts and objects shaped British perception of time and history by producing new curiosity about the very recent past, as well as a new self-consciousness about the means by which the past could be understood. In a panoptic sweep, Historical Style brings together art history, philosophy, and literary history to portray an era increasingly aware of itself. Ensuing chapters analyze Snyder's countercultural invocation of this regional idea, concentrating on the poet's migratory or “creaturely” sensibility, his gift for literary translation, his physical embodiment of trans-Pacific ideals, his role as tribal spokesperson for Haight-Ashbury hippies, and his burgeoning interest in environmental issues. Many virulence factors of Escherichia coli need to traverse the inner membrane, periplasm, and outer membrane to be effective. The bacterium has a variety of secretion systems to achieve this. Two of these, the type I secretion system (T1SS) and the type V secretion system (T5SS), are explored in this chapter. In E. coli the best-known T1SS is that used to secrete hemolysin, a pore-forming toxin found in both uropathogenic and enterohemorrhagic strains of E. coli. Many proteins are secreted via the T5SS in E. coli, with the proteins having a wide range of virulence functions. This chapter will focus on these two systems; the mechanism of biogenesis, the function of the secreted proteins and current attempts to use these systems in biotechnological applications.

According to astrophysical theory, magnetic fields should play an important role in the structure and dynamics of the interstellar medium. While astronomical observations confirm this directly, the observational record is sparse. This is because magnetic fields can only be measured via polarimetric methods, and most of these methods can only provide an indirect inference of the magnetic field strength. The Zeeman effect, however, is the only method by which in situ measurements of astrophysical magnetic fields can be made. The spectral signature of Zeeman splitting is imprinted in the circular polarization spectrum of radiation received from an astronomical source. In order to make a reliable detection at radio frequencies, one must employ careful calibrations and account for instrumental effects. We begin this dissertation by covering the fundamentals of radio spectropolarimetry. We then offer historical details regarding the Zeeman effect and its use in single-dish radio observations. We present an outline of how one accurately measures the Zeeman effect using large single-dish radio telescopes. We follow this with results from an assessment of the polarization properties of the 100 m Green Bank Telescope (GBT). We then present magnetic field detections made via the Zeeman effect from the Galactic scale to cosmological distances. We begin with GBT observations of 21 cm emission toward the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC) complex. Recent observations have suggested that fields stronger than 20 microgauss are located at the distance of the TMC. Our Zeeman observations rule out fields of this strength, but do show a clear +5 microgauss detection from HI emission at the velocity of the TMC. More surprisingly, we have discovered multiple detections of a line-of-sight magnetic field of strength roughly +40 microgauss in a filament near -50 km/s. We then present a windfall of detections of milligauss-strength magnetic fields in starburst galaxies. Detected by means of Zeeman splitting of 1667 MHz hydroxyl megamaser emission, these Arecibo and GBT results represent the first extragalactic Zeeman measurements to probe the field inside an external galaxy. Finally, we climb the cosmological distance ladder, and present a dramatic GBT detection of a magnetic field in a damped Lyman-alpha absorber at a redshift of 0.692. We discuss possible scenarios for the creation of an 84 microgauss field at a look-back time of 6.4 Gyr.
