Timothy Verhoeven demonstrates that, far from being crushed by an evangelical juggernaut, secularists harnessed a range of cultural forces—the legacy of the Revolutionary founders, hostility to Catholicism, a belief in national exceptionalism and more—to argue that the United States was not a Christian nation, branding their opponents as fanatics who threatened both democratic liberties as well as true religion.

This is the story of Collett Leventhorpe (1815-1889), an Englishman and former captain in the 14th Regiment of Foot. Leventhorpe came to North Carolina about 1843, settled there, and later served the Confederacy as a colonel in the 34th and 11th N.C. and brigadier general commanding the Home Guard in eastern North Carolina. Though he trained as a physician at the College of Charleston in the late 1840s, he never practiced and was a restless man, endlessly in search of fortune--before the war in the gold fields of North Carolina and Georgia, and after it in the pursuit of lost estates, art treasures and inventions. But he excelled first and foremost as a Confederate soldier. As a field commander he was never defeated in battle, and his record was marred only by his own rejection of a much deserved but very late promotion to CSA brigadier. He lies buried in the beautiful Happy Valley section of Caldwell County.

Mill workers' wages rose, their purchasing power grew, and their economic expectations increased--with little help from the unions. Timothy Minchin argues that the reasons behind the failure of textile unions in the postwar South lie not in stereotypical assumptions of mill workers' passivity or anti-union hostility but in these large-scale social changes. Minchin addresses the challenges faced by the TWUA--competition from nonunion mills that matched or exceeded union wages, charges of racism and radicalism within the union, and conflict between its northern and southern branches--and focuses especially on the devastating general strike of 1951. A confrontation within a prison between the inmate Franklin and a National Guardsman, there to staff the prison during the 1977 Wisconsin state employee strike, starts a series of events neither man foresees nor can ignore as chance soon brings them together again. Our hero has travelled with his wife and sister to help take Rick and Paula's large trailer into Nicolet National Forest in upper Wisconsin, to hunt deer in the days before Thanksgiving. Other friends have joined them. All look forward to the fun, to the hunt, and to help a friend establish a new home. The fun ends abruptly when Franklin and his convicts, having escaped from prison the evening before, enter this forest to avoid the law and find their camp. They forcibly take command yet not every camper has been caught. An on-going struggle littered with death ensues and, as it does, Franklin and our hero discover their paths have crossed again. Franklin takes delight in this, knows nearly every advantage is his to take, as he begins to hunt our hero down. Our hero is terrified, confused, emotionally shocked, from witnessing the convicts kill as he begins to fight back. He takes a questionable stance, makes tormenting choices and daring actions, with unknown results that could either save or kill his wife, sister, and friends. A wicked blizzard compounds his problems for survival. Then he learns Franklin is foremost among those he fights-from Franklin himself. As Franklin pursues him in the snows his life already ebbs away ... can he save the others-are they still alive-can he save himself-what can you do when there's no one to help and no where to run and you know you're slowly dying?

This particular book also has a chapter on ancient & modern round ball sports, after reading it, one, might better explain the overall craze of round ball sports in America. One of the most fascinating aspects of Moorish Science Temple history is the (Pan American Conference 1928) And the so called Moor circle (7). I conclude this book with Addendums dealing with these very intriguing subjects along with the national headress the (Fez). My mother is part Nanticoke and Fulani, my father Cherokee & Mende. My mission, was to represent my family roots through literature along with magnifying cultures not often written about, at least not by one of its own.
