The christological writings of Apollinarius of Laodicea and what has been written about them present us with something of a contradiction. The style of Apollinarius' exposition and his intellectual reputation indicate that he taught a clear, logical and systematic doctrine of Christ and on this the commentators tend to agree: 'The brilliance and thoroughgoing logic of Apollinarius' system are undeniable'; 'This was a brilliant and logical system destined to exercise an enormous influence'; '...it stands as a complete and elaborate system of doctrine to which all his writings make their contribution'. Yet when it comes to specifying the precise nature of this doctrine his interpreters, both ancient and modern, offer divergent opinions and strongly disagree with one another. It is this apparent contradiction which first attracted me to re-examine the Apollinarian texts as collected by Hans Lietzmann in his 1904 edition and to reconsider what has been said about them, for it suggests that the interpretative discussion may not be closed since the contradiction would appear to have two possible causes: either the existing interpretations have been variously less than successful at delineating the precise nature of Apollinarian doctrine, or Apollinarius' teaching was, in fact, less clear, logical and systematic than his style and reputation suggests and his interpreters assume."--

Over the course of the seventeenth to eighteenth centuries, an interior private notion of religion gained wide public recognition. It then spread through settler colonial contexts around the world. It has since been criticized for its abstract, immaterial nature as well as its irrelevance to traditions beyond the European context. However, such critiques obscure the contradiction between religion’s definition as a matter of interior privacy and its public visibility in various printed publications. Timothy Stanley responds by re-evaluating the cultural impact of the exterior forms in which religious texts were printed, such as pamphlets, broadsheets, books, and journals. He also applies that evidence to critical studies of religion shaped by the crisis of representation in the human sciences. While Jacques Derrida is oft-cited as a progenitor of that crisis, the opposite case is made. Additionally, Stanley draws on Derrida’s thought to reframe the relation between a religious text’s internal hermeneutic interests and its external forms. In sum, this book provides a new model of how people printed religion in ways that can be compared to other material cultures around the world.

Stimulated by new editions of Shelley's writings and the evidence of notebooks, the editors have assembled an outstanding group of international Shelley scholars to work through the implications of recent advances in scholarship. With particular attention to texts that have been neglected or underestimated, the contributors consider many important aspects of Shelley's prolific and remarkably diverse output, including the verse letter, plays, prose essays, satire, pamphlets, political verse, romance, prefaces, translations from the Greek, prose style, artistic representations, fragments and early writings. Revaluations of Shelley's youthful works, often criticized for their over-exuberance, pay dividends as they reveal Shelley's early maturation as a writer and also shed light on his later achievement. Taken as a whole, the collection makes evident that Shelley's reputation has been based largely on surprisingly imperfect and incomplete edited publications, driven by Victorian taste and culture. A writer very different from the one we thought we knew emerges from these essays, which are sure to inspire more reappraisals of Shelley's work.

Horace Walpole, famous for his novel The Castle of Otranto and his gothick castle-villa, Strawberry Hill, has been oddly shielded by his previous admirers. The most famous of these was W. S. He was however a conventional man of his times and could not bring himself to acknowledge Walpole's homosexuality and its implications. R. W. Timothy Mowl's study of Horace Walpole is the first to give a complete and convincing picture of the whole man. It is the first to show that, despite his aristocratic connections (he was the youngest son of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain's first Prime Minister) Horace Walpole was a sexual and social outsider whose talents as a publicist were used to serve his own agenda. The ending of that relationship, and Walpole's subsequent resentment of Lincoln's relatives, affected his judgment, friendships and emotions for the rest of his life.
